Up for auction at no-reserve is this 2001 Volkswagen MK3.5 Golf Cabriolet GLX finished in Tornado Red over a tan leather interior. In 1998, the MKIII-based Golf received a facelift with updated styling cues from the MKIV generation, while retaining the original MKIII platform. A lifelong California car, this top-range GLX model was purchased by the seller from the original owner’s family in 2017 and has been garage-kept and carefully maintained ever since. It features an array of tasteful upgrades including Koni coilovers, a Eurosport exhaust, ABT wheels, an Alpine radio, and a MOMO steering wheel. With just under 117k miles showing on the odometer, this charming 5-speed manual Golf Cabriolet GLX is now being offered for auction without reserve by its seller out of California.
This Cabrio is finished in Tornado Red with a power-operated convertible soft top in black. The seller notes that the car underwent a full polish and ceramic coating within the last year. Some clear coat fading is present on the side mirrors and front grille, additional photos are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. Modifications to the exterior appearance include a “stubby” Fuba antenna, OEM Golf GTI smoked taillights and MKIV black housing headlights. The lowered ride height complements aftermarket 17” ABT A23 wheels. These wheels were made by OZ Racing Italy and come dressed in a set of Firestone Firehawk tires showing date codes from 2018.
As a GLX model, this Golf comes equipped with a premium tan leather interior with heated bolstered seats. Other features include power windows, power door locks, and folding rear seats for increased cargo capacity. The seller indicates slight wear on the driver's seat bolsters commensurate with normal use. Modifications to the interior include a MOMO Heritage line steering wheel and shift knob, and an Alpine radio with upgraded speakers. A new A/C compressor is said to have been installed within the last 6k miles and all original accessories are said to be fully functional. The seller notes that the car currently shows an ABS warning light. The original 3-spoke steering wheel is also included with the sale.
Power comes from a 2.0L SOHC inline 4-cylinder engine producing up to 115 HP stock. The front wheels are driven through a desirable 5-speed manual transmission. Some driver-focused performance upgrades have been installed including adjustable stainless steel Koni coilovers, H&R front and rear swaybars, Stoptech brake pads, slotted rotors, a Eurosport short shifter, Eurosport cat-back exhaust, and a Neuspeed cold air intake (CARB Legal). This MK3.5 is said to have been well maintained throughout its life, receiving regular service through Volkswagen dealers as highlighted in the CARFAX report. A new timing belt has been installed within the last 6k miles and the car is said to pass California smog requirements.

@MC-Leather The clutch hasn't been replaced in my ownership, but has plenty of life left. I had a PCarMarket member named Don come by and drive the car. He tested the clutch, pushing it in/out while on the gas. He said there is good clutch life left, and I agree. The car will need nothing in the next $5k miles. It just had an oil change/service in Feb 2021 which was only 800 miles ago. I've always serviced this car with an open check book, anything it ever needed has been done.
Has the clutch ever been replaced? How does it feel? What work do you think the car would need in the next 5000 miles?

I had a PCarMarket member come by to see and drive the car yesterday evening. Quotes from him while driving: very solid and tight, rides much better than I though it would, isn't as loud as I thought either. He also said the detailer did a great job with the polish and ceramic coat. Thanks for the bids, excited to see her go to a good home. This is a great car that is sporty and fun but also practical and very reliable.

This car includes factory airbag steering wheel and can be reinstalled before delivery in addition to the Momo if preferred. Currently there is an airbag light in the dash because of the Momo. The passenger and seat airbags are still intact and original. Factory airbox also included.
