Widely considered among the greatest sports sedans of all time, the BMW E39 M5 highlights a naturally aspirated S62 V8 engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This 2002 example is finished in Carbon Black Metallic over Black Nappa leather and is equipped with the Heritage Leather Package as well as an upgraded suspension and Tubi-Style exhaust system. Extensively serviced over the past year, this M5 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of North Carolina with approximately 105k miles on the odometer.

The M5 is distinguished from the standard E39 5-Series model range by its aggressive front and rear bumper design, side skirts, rounded aerodynamic mirrors, trunk lid spoiler, and Shadowline trim. Additional features include xenon headlights with washers, fog lights, and M5 badging on the trunk lid and side moldings. This example is finished in Carbon Black Metallic and rides on 18” Style 65 wheels. Upon the seller’s acquisition, the front bumper, hood, roof, and rear trunk lid were refinished due to clear coat oxidation. The cabin is upholstered in Black Nappa leather and features fine wood trim, an Anthracite Alcantara headliner, and the Heritage Leather Package. Interior details include M5-badged door sills, an M-branded gear shift lever, and an M Sport multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel with amenities including power-adjustable and heated seats with memory, automatic climate control, a navigation system, and an electric sunroof. The seller notes some leather stretching on the dashboard and the headliner is beginning to sag on the sunroof shade. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

The E39 M5 equips a 4.9-liter S62 V8 engine with double-VANOS variable valve timing, individual throttle bodies, hollow camshafts, and a quasi-dry-sump lubrication system. The S62 produced up to 394 HP and 369 lb.-ft of torque when new and allowed the M5 to reach 60 MPH from a standstill in as little as 4.8 seconds with an electronically governed top speed of 155 MPH. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Getrag 420G 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller adds that an upgraded suspension has been installed along with a Tubi-Style exhaust system. Additionally, maintenance carried out by an in-house BMW specialist over the past year is said to include replacing the lower front control arms & bushings, flushing the brake & coolant fluids, and replacing the power steering lines, engine mounts, thermostat, passenger-side & rear window regulators, spark plugs, rear differential bushings, rear upper control arm boots, and front swaybar links. An oil service was also performed.
