Renowned as one of the greatest sports sedans ever produced, the BMW E39 M5 features a naturally aspirated S62 V8 engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This 2002 example is finished in Carbon Black Metallic over Black Nappa leather upholstery. A California car until the seller’s acquisition approximately two years ago, it has since received over $20k in services. Accompanied by a host of documentation, this M5 is now being offered for auction out of New York.
This M5 is finished in Carbon Black Metallic and rides on 18” Style 65 wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Compared to the standard E39 5-Series, the M5 features factory Shadowline trim, revised bumpers and side skirts, aerodynamic mirrors, a trunk lid spoiler, and quad exhaust outlets. Black kidney and lower grilles have been fitted, and the car wears new BMW and M5 badging. The finish has received a paint correction, polish, and ceramic coating. The seller reports that the front and rear bumpers were recently replaced and refinished, and touch-up paint has been applied to the hood to address rock chips. Imperfections include scattered rock chips on the hood, a small dent below the right taillight, and minor scratches throughout. Other blemishes consist of two dime-sized curb marks on the right front wheel and a small windshield crack near the registration sticker, which has remained stable over the past two years. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin is appointed with Black Nappa leather upholstery. Details include an M-branded gear shift lever, an M Sport multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel, and M5-branded door sills. Amenities include power-adjustable and heated front seats with memory, automatic climate control, and an electric sunroof. A BlueBus module has been added to enable Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming from an iPhone. Minor wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage is noted, most prominently on the seat bolsters and firm leather surfaces. Two small nicks are visible in the titanium trim on the front passenger door. The power rear sunshade and manual rear door privacy shades are functional and intact. All electronics are reported to work properly, though slight pixelation is noted and the BlueBus system occasionally experiences audio dropouts during phone calls. The front center parking distance control sensor requires replacement, the sunroof opens but does not tilt due to a broken linkage, and a faint creaking noise is noted from the exhaust system.
The E39 M5 is powered by a 4.9-liter S62 V8 engine featuring double-VANOS variable valve timing, individual throttle bodies, hollow camshafts, and a quasi-dry-sump lubrication system. Factory-rated at 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the S62 enables the M5 to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in approximately 4.8 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 155 MPH. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag 420G 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Known issues include minor seepage from the rear main seal and light sweating from the valve cover gaskets, neither of which is reported to have required immediate attention. Services performed under current ownership include the following:
This sale will include a clean title (lien).
The seller would like you to know: “California car all its life. The prior owner was a mechanic who purchased the car from his customer, an older gentleman who had put highway miles on the car and who worked as a writer. I have owned the car for 2 years and have invested over $20k specifically from a famous shop in California, “E39source”. I have all documented receipts from the previous owner as well. I bought this car with every intention of keeping it for life, and it is my dream car. Unfortunately, I have to let it go due to personal matters, and I will one day have another E39 M5. I hope this car goes to another fellow enthusiast, as this car is being sold in much better condition than when I purchased it two years ago.”

@etherwiggles I believe the car is still on the stock chains and guides and I have not had any issues so therefore have not replaced. The car had a tune from Matt at HD tuning and the car has since been put back to the stock M5 tune.
have the timing chains been done, they usually need to be replaced by 150k and the kit and service are surprisingly expensive
what tune was on the car. is it still stock tune?
@GDogg thank you!
Absolutely stunning E39!
Carbon Black is a favorite on these M5’s. The Black to Blue hues are dynamic to see.
Excellent service records.
Best wishes.

@aidan786 seat twists were addressed at e39source (in receipts). Failed emissions test was due to a tune the car had that had been put back to the stock m5 tune.
@aidan786 the work performed from e39source was 2 years ago. The valve covers are as of recently just starting to sweat and the RMS has minor seepage. The car doesn’t need a clutch so the RMS has not been addressed yet.
@Brigmm yes the car is in oyster bay and I would welcome any inspection. You can also contact Matt at “The Little Garage” in Huntington who recently did a PPI on the car.
Is the car in oyster bay? In person inspection available ?
Also, any details on the RMS leaks and valve cover gaskets? Has that happened recently? Just curious why that wasn't addressed by E39 source at the time of other work completed?
@Mfb2186 , Thanks. Will keep an eye on this one, but I recently added a ‘13 M3 Lime Rock Park back into my fleet, so all 5 garage bays are full right now. Would love another E39 M5, though. Even if wife would kill me!
Hi @seller car looks awesome- two questions.... Any details on the failed emissions test in NYC this past Aug? Also, any seat twist on the bases/ backs of the driver or passenger power seat functions?
Bid in the amount of $5,500
@StuM thank you, Ryan at e39source is arguably one of the top shops for M cars specifically the e39 platform since he’s owned his for over 10 years.
@StuM , Our son is also a 20+ year BMW Mstr Tech and has always said these are one of the best, most fun BMW’s to own. He loves working on them.
The E39 Source outfit, near us here, is very well respected for their work and expertise on these cars. Great overview video. I had a new-bought E39 M5 in ‘01 and then three Z8’s with the same powertrain. Solid vehicles. Wish it was still here down the road from us. GLWA
@WesKlock thank you very much sir!
beautifully photographed to show that carbon black metallic is a really impressive shade of dark blue in most lighting. GLWA
