With the introduction of the 5th-generation Ford Mustang in 1999, long-time Mustang tuner Saleen released the S281, a special Mustang variant equipped with an optional supercharged 4.6L V8 producing 375 HP mated to a Saleen Quick Ratio 5-speed manual transmission, a Saleen Racecraft suspension, a Saleen aero kit, and a Saleen leather interior. This 2002 convertible example was ordered in Torch Red and was optioned with 18” staggered polished 5-spoke Saleen wheels, a Saleen “speedster” tonneau cover, Saleen sport bars with a wind deflector, and the Mach 1000 audio system. It has been modified with a Bassini exhaust system, upgraded 4.10 gears, and a Ford calibration box to match the speedometer to the 4.10 gearing. Showing just over 33k miles on the odometer with approximately 2k added by the seller in the last 10 years, this 2002 Saleen S281 convertible is now being offered at auction by the seller based out of Maryland.

The exterior is finished in Torch Red, a special proprietary Saleen paint color said to be a translucent red laid over a silver base coat. The S281 features a Saleen aerodynamic kit consisting of a new front fascia, a lightweight hood with a hood scoop, side skirts, side scoops, a rear fascia, and a rear wing. Silver Saleen graphics run down the rocker panels and S281 badging was installed at the fenders and the rear. Other equipment includes a black power soft top, an optional Saleen “speedster” tonneau cover, a Saleen roll bar with a wind deflector and integrated third brake light, dual power mirrors, and polished dual exhaust finishers. The seller reports multiple paint chips throughout, some cracking of the paint, small scrapes on the front fascia, and some chrome finish flaking in the wheels, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The optional staggered 18” chrome Saleen wheels are mounted with Toyo tires showing date codes from 2008.

The interior features six-way power adjustable Saleen sport seats upholstered in black leather, a 200-MPH Saleen white-faced gauge cluster, Saleen Performance driving pedals, Saleen custom door panels with red accents and S281 embroidery, Saleen floor mats, a twin gauge pod for boost and intercooler temperature in the center dash, and a console plaque denoting the vehicles serial number. Amenities include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a matching shift knob, a Pioneer head unit, power accessories, remote keyless entry, and an optional 1,140-watt Mach 1000 audio system.

This S281 is powered by a 4.6L V8 fitted with an optional Saleen Series IV twin-screw supercharger and a water-to-air intercooler which is said to produce up to 375 HP and 415 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by a 5-speed manual transmission and Saleen MaxGrip limited-slip differential which has been upgraded with 4.10 gearing. Performance features include a Saleen aluminum dual-core radiator, a high-flow cooling system, a Saleen Racecraft tuned suspension featuring N2 struts, variable rate springs, and thicker sway bars, and power 4-wheel brakes with ABS and dual-piston calipers in the front. Modifications include a Bassini exhaust system and a Ford calibration box which matches the speedometer to the upgraded 4.10 differential gearing. The seller reports that they have performed annual oil changes, and all fluids have been exchanged under their ownership.
