We are pleased to present this 2002 Mercedes-Benz R129 SL500 Silver Arrow. Presented exclusively in special Silver Arrow Metallic paint over a two-tone black and silver Nappa leather interior, a limited run of 1,450 examples of the SL500 Silver Arrow were offered in the U.S. market at the conclusion of the R129 series. The Silver Arrow pays homage to the iconic Mercedes W125 racing cars of the 1930s, as well as the W196R race car that won back-to-back Formula 1 driver’s championships in 1954 and 1955. Purchased new in 2001, this SL500 Silver Arrow is now being offered for auction by its original owner out of California with just over 29k miles showing on the odometer.

This special edition R129 is finished in Silver Arrow Metallic (777U) with a black convertible soft top and a removable painted hardtop.  The car is said to have always been garage kept and sparingly driven from new.  The seller notes some scuffs on the underside of the front bumper as well as a small scratch on the left front corner of the hardtop, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. Unique details of the Silver Arrow include Bi-Xenon headlights, an AMG aerodynamic package with a revised front spoiler and side skirts, and special “Silver Arrow” badges on the front fenders.  This SL500 Silver Arrow rides on model-specific 18” Albireo two-piece alloy wheels manufactured by BBS, which are currently dressed in Goodyear Eagle F1 tires showing date codes from 2014.

The interior showcases model-exclusive two-tone black and silver Nappa leather upholstery with special birds-eye maple wood trim. The power-adjustable and heated seats feature silver inserts and black bolsters that match the two-tone steering wheel, shifter, and door panels. Stainless steel illuminated door sills line the footwells along with drilled aluminum pedals and black floor mats with silver piping and “SL” logos unique to the Silver Arrow. The two-tone leather steering wheel sits ahead of a machine-turned instrument panel housing a 160-MPH speedometer, a 7k-RPM tachometer, and an analog clock along with gauges for fuel level, fuel economy, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The door concealing the ashtray ahead of the machine-turned shifter gate features a Silver Arrow insignia with a silhouette of the Mercedes W125 race car.  All gauges and accessories are reported to be fully functional.

The SL500 Silver Arrow is powered by a 5.0L M113 all-aluminum V8 engine which was factory rated at 302 HP and 339 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic transmission.  The car is said to have been serviced annually from new and the seller notes the hydraulic valves have been replaced for the electrically operated soft top.

This sale will include a removable hardtop and a clean title. One of the rarest and most collectible models of the R129 series, this one-owner SL500 Silver Arrow offers an excellent opportunity to get behind the wheel of a future Mercedes-Benz classic.

For what it's worth, my 2002, 23k mile SL600 SA disintegrated significantly and was replaced. These engines (V-8 or V-12) produce lots of heat under that svelte hood and it deteriorates the foam hood pad after 15 years or so. Remember this is almost a 20-year old car and some things need to be replaced due to time not just miles.... Just sayin'.... GLWA!

Thank you for the service records.

I understand you owning an auto repair shop would explain the gaps since the work was done for family and as result not kept.

I do wish such a car had more documentation, but between the listing, pictures and the explanation I can see why I should still take it at face value.

For everyone else potentially looking to bid on this car- I don't have any alarm bells going off. I am hopeful about the next 20 hours!

@Vasir Send me your email and I will gladly send what I have for you

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@FLCarNut The vehicle was purchased as a gift to my aunt. Her husband drove the car mainly because she doesn't like to drive. Throughout the years his kids drove it around for a weekend or so to put some miles on it. As for the service records send me your email and I will email them to you. As for the under hood pad- please contact Mercedes and ask them why their hood pad disintegrated like that- Thanks- MIke

  • FLCarNut (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@kefala23: Thanks for your reply, although it's somewhat confusing. If the car was purchased for your aunt and she never drove it, who put the 29K miles on the car? Your uncle, you, or someone else? Also, I don't understand as to why you won't upload the service records, as is customary for sellers who have them. They play a part in a potential buyer's decision to purchase your car. Providing them to the eventual buyer after the sale is like the seller of a house telling the potential buyer that he can only arrange for a home inspection after he's closed on the house. Unwillingness to show service records is not a confidence booster to a potential buyer who will think that the records are being hidden from them for no justifiable reason. It's never too late to upload a few sheets of paper. By the way, I had a 1992 R129 with over 60K miles and the hood liner pad was like new! Was your car garaged throughout its life, or parked outside. With all due respect, I'm trying to understand why the hood liner pad has basically disintegrated on your 2002 R129 with only 29K miles. I look forward to your reply. Thank you!

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Vasir Thanks for your inquiry. This car is registered And was purchased by my uncle George. It is his car that was purchased for his wife. She never drove it. I am in the car business and he asked me to sell it for him since I own and operate a repair shop since 1969. It’s family so I am helping them in this matter. Thanks

  • Vasir (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@kefala23 "The left axle boot may appear whatever it appears but it is not torn nor is it leaking."

    ... Alright.

"Yes the tires are dated 2014 but the vehicle was always garaged and they are not cracked on the outside. The definitely have more life left on them."

So they need to be replaced by whomever the buyer is.

"The hood pan is cracked and we haven't replaced it because we didn't think it was necessary to do."

    Interesting.

"The car is all original and has never been in an accident. It was purchased as a wedding anniversary gift for my aunt."

This is listed as a one owner, private party listing- Is this your car or your aunts?

Again, I am not trying to dissect anything you say or what i see- Honestly; but if I am willing to pay potentially top dollar for a Silver Arrow like I am, then there are questions that keep presenting themselves.

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@FLCarNut Thanks for your inquiry. As for the hood pad we didn't feel necessary to replace it. It is common after many years to see the hood pad cracked especially on Mercedes Benz vehicles. As for the armor all the vehicle was professionally detailed and they use a leather conditioner for the interior and the seats- professional grade. There are no visual cracks on the wood nor the seats. As for the pen and the brief case. I spoke to my uncle and he told me when he moved from arcadia to Laguna it must have been lost in the move. After speaking with his son he told me the brief case fell apart and was tossed and the pen stopped working so he tossed it as well. They didn't think those items would be of any significance when re-selling the vehicle if and when they decided to do so- sorry for the confusion. As for the window sticker I did take a picture of it and uploaded it to PCARMARKET but for some reason they have not yet placed it on the platform. The service records I will be more then happy to give to whomever purchases the vehicle. I will not upload them- because the auction is ending tomorrow. Tire tread depth is 7/32nds. Thanks- Mike

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Vasir The left axle boot may appear whatever it appears but it is not torn nor is it leaking. The vehicle was serviced by time not by miles and had oil changes done yearly as well as many batteries replaced due to lack of use. Yes the tires are dated 2014 but the vehicle was always garaged and they are not cracked on the outside. The definitely have more life left on them. I uploaded the window sticker to the platform but they have not yet loaded it onto the site. The hood pan is cracked and we haven't replaced it because we didn't think it was necessary to do. The car is all original and has never been in an accident. It was purchased as a wedding anniversary gift for my aunt. The car is all original and drives wonderfully.

  • Vasir (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Hey thanks for the reply- I didn’t get the second parts of the question however, sorry I’m not trying to be pushy. Did you do the servicing by time or miles?

Also the rear axle boot, left side shows evidence of being dried out.

While the car looks damn near perfect I’m a little hesitant without the the responses to my questions because plastic/rubber/seals/fluids dry out and without following the service schedule by time when miles don’t apply, then these future responsibilities fall on the buyer; the question becomes if the buyer knows this or not.

I’m on r129 number 5 so I like to think as an armature I’m a little well versed, and while I appreciate the top being addressed, that is the least of my worries- it’s all the other stuff.

Also, are the tires in fact that old? They need to be replaced every 6 years regardless of miles if I’m not mistaken.

    Thank you!

  • FLCarNut (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@kefala23: Hi Mike. It appears that whoever detailed your car used some type of hi-shine ArmorAll on the dash and other interior panels. Yikes! Is that the case?
Why is the hood liner in such bad condition and why haven't you replaced it? I've never seen one that badly damaged, especially on a 29K mile car.
Are there any cracks in the wood, or in the leather?
You stated that you uploaded a copy of the window sticker. I don't see it anywhere. Am I missing something? If not, would you please upload a clear photo of the window sticker.
In one post, you stated that the briefcase and pen were lost when you moved homes. In your next post, you stated that the pen "stopped working" years ago and was tossed out, and the briefcase "fell apart" as well and was tossed out. Those two statements are in conflict with one another. Why is that?
Would you please upload all the service records that you have from 20K miles onward. Did you obtain the earlier service records from the dealer?
I see that you haven't changed your tires since 2014. What are the current tire tread measurements?
Thanks in advance for your reply!

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@bluemonkey I will look into it. I am sure the dealership for the first several years and then at my auto repair shop for the rest.

  • bluemonkey (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@kefala23 ah okay. Where did you have the car serviced during the first 20k miles? Maybe you can obtain a copy of all the service records from the shop(s)?

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@bluemonkey I have service records from 20,000 miles until current but I do not have all of them.

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Vasir I do not have all the records but I do have records from 20,000 miles until current. Valve cover gaskets were replaced and the convertible top solenoids were replaced amongst many yearly oil services.

  • bluemonkey (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Hi Mike, the carfax doesn’t show any service maintainence record. Do you have any of them? Thanks.

  • Vasir (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I see in image 98, the rear axle boot looks a little tired. any leakage from there yet? The maintenance done over the years, were they done by miles, or time; since things tend to dry out, etc. I'm not sure if I missed a part where there are service records or not, and if I have, sorry! ... Mostly busy staring at your car, ha!

Hello everyone. I just uploaded some more pictures. I uploaded a picture of the wind deflector and the original window sticker. I also uploaded pictures of the undercarriage. Please let me know if there are any other requests or pictures you would like. We do also have the second key as well.

    @kefala23 and the wind blocker/keys?

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@1966corvette Hi and thanks for your inquiry. The white spot on the console was leather conditioner the detailer forgot to wipe off I caught after the fact. The window sticker is in my file I can take pictures of it and post it for you after this long Holliday. I can also do the same if the undercarriage. As for the brief case and pen. The pen stoped working years ago and was tossed out. The brief case fell apart as well and was tossed out. We do still have the conditional sales receipt from when the vehicle was purchased from Rusnak in Pasadena as well as the window sticker.

  • kefala23 (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Hello everyone this is Mike the owner of this beautiful SL500 Sikver arrow. The window sticker is in my file. I can take pictures of the undercarriage after the Holliday and post them. Unfortunately the brief case and pen was lost when we moved homes. Please ask any questions and I will answer them.

  • 1966corvette (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Beautiful car but.....where is the wind blocker, window sticker, briefcase and key photos?
