Offering an open-top driving experience and naturally aspirated flat-six power, this 2002 Porsche 996 Carrera Cabriolet comes finished in Carrara White over Metropol Blue partial leather upholstery. It was factory-optioned with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Technic Package, Heated Front Seats Package, and the Power Seat Package. This 996 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Maryland at no reserve while showing approximately 107k miles on the odometer.

In 2002, the Carrera lineup underwent a facelift including redesigned headlights derived from the 911 Turbo. This example comes finished in Carrara White with a Metropol Blue convertible soft top and has been modified with clear Euro-style side markers. The optional Technic Package adds Bi-Xenon headlights with washers. Standard, black-finished brake calipers with Porsche lettering can be seen beneath the 17” 996 10-spoke wheels dressed in Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires from 2018 & 2019. The seller states that a small ding was repaired on the front end by the first owner. Additional images are provided in the gallery, along with a CARFAX report showing non-collision damage to have occurred in July 2020.

The cabin presents Metropol Blue partial leather upholstery along with matching floor mats. Additional options include the Power Seat Package, Heated Front Seats Package, and the Technic Package which adds an on-board computer, a CD player, and a wind deflector. The seller adds that a Pioneer sound system and a backup camera have been installed.

Introduced for the 2002 model year, the M96 3.6-liter flat-six engine in this Carrera produces up to 320 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Stopping power is provided by fixed 4-piston brakes with ventilated discs. The seller adds that noteworthy service items include replacements to the rear brake pads & rotors, are/oil separator, serpentine belt, passenger-side air conditioning line, water pump, and convertible top latch, along with the convertible top recalibrated and the rear main seal redone. Additionally, the CARFAX report shows a total of 22 service history entries dating back to the initial delivery.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, and a car cover.

The seller would like you to know: “I have owned this car for 3 years and have taken very good care of it. It has been garage kept and serviced annually with any issues addressed at that time. I am the third owner of the car, and I had a long conversation with the previous owner and believe he also well maintained the car. I believe I have taken care of all issues with the car. I only hope the new owner will enjoy it as much as I have.”

I noticed the back of the drivers seat is reclining. Does it adjust electronically to a more vertical position.

  • Wsarge (registered bidder) 1 yearago

@faugrad I also have an 02 Cabriolet with 100K, no metal in the filter, runs GREAT. I think there are 1000’s of good IMS bearing that have needlessly been replaced. GLWTA😎

@baronw2 are there 2 keys included and ever any issues with the security system?

  • faugrad (registered bidder) 1 yearago

@AtLast - When the bearing seal fails it will result in less oil going to the bearing which will slowly wear it down resulting in metal shavings in your oil. That's why I stated "and the oil filter doesn't have metal shavings you'll be fine". It's not sudden death when the seal fails. Change the oil every 5k miles and cut open your filter and check it. If there are metal shavings then replace the bearing, so if you are proactive you can prevent complete failure.
I stand by my opinion that the M96 is a lot more reliable than the internet gives it credit for.

@faugrad Hey Mr. KnowItAll, IMS failures at high mileage takes place when the bearing's seals fail. I found out the hard way, and the indy shop told me they see the seals failing in nearly every high mileage bearing they replace (about 20 a year).

  • baronw2 (seller) 1 yearago

No leaks in the car. The top is original. I just replaced the latch mechanism and recalibrated the system. I have used the ragtop cleaner and waterproofing since I bought the car.
I am selling because I have decided to return to a one car family.

  • bkouruklis (registered bidder) 1 yearago

Hi seller- It looks great. Just a a few questions. 1) Any leaks currently occurring on the car? 2)Is that the original convertible top? 3) Why are you selling it?

  • faugrad (registered bidder) 1 yearago

If the IMS hasn't failed after 21 years and over 100k miles and the oil filter doesn't have metal shavings you'll be fine. The IMS failure rate is somewhere around 5% and usually occurred early in a cars life.
The IMS issue isn't the Achilles heel it is made out to be but all the IMS retrofitters surely want you to think so. I'd be more worried about driving an original B6 S4 than a 996 any day of the week as the timing chain tensioner failure on the Audi is at least guaranteed unlike the IMS failure.

  • baronw2 (seller) 1 yearago

No work has been done on ims bearing. My car has been driven 106,700 miles with no problems.

  • GTSilver16 (registered bidder) 1 yearago

    @seller

Has the IMS bearing been retrofitted?
