This 2002 Porsche 996 Carrera Coupe has been transformed into a Safari-style off-roader featuring a lifted body, custom MCS coilovers, GT3 sway bars, a frame-mounted push bar, LED lighting, cloth seat inserts, and a roof basket stocked with overland gear. It was sourced by the current owner in 2021 with the intent of carrying out this specific build and has been fortified with a new clutch, flywheel, and IMS-bearing solution. Showing approximately 77k miles on the odometer, this nicely executed 996 Safari car is now being offered for auction out of Maryland.
This Coupe is finished in Seal Grey Metallic and features a 1” solid alloy bushing body lift kit. It has been fitted with a custom fabricated frame-mounted push bar including custom milled attachment points and tow shackles as well as a custom rear push bar mounted with LED lights. On top, a custom-fabricated quick-release basket is mounted to factory roof rails and includes a threaded mount for a full-size spare tire as well as a shovel, an axe, a bike carrier, and four LED lights with 30,000 lumens output. An additional 13,000 lumens are provided by a hood-mounted LED light bar. The car rides on 18”x8” Viktor Werks alloy wheels with new Sumitomo Ice Edge winter tires. The seller notes that clear 3M paint protection film has been applied over the front bumper, hood, and fenders. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The black interior has been modified with vintage Recaro-style Carrera cloth seat inserts along with a custom switch panel housed in the center console to control the aftermarket lighting system. The seller states all factory accessories remain operational including the sunroof, Hi-Fi Sound System, climate control system, and heated seats.
A naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 320 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. The suspension provides up to 10” of ground clearance using custom MCS 16-way adjustable coilovers with 3'' extended rod & valve bodies as well as adjustable GT3 sway bars and lower control arms, Elephant Racing drop links, GT3 tie rod ends, GT3 rubber bushings, and adjustable caster arms with anti-dive and anti-squat geometry. The seller states a new clutch, flywheel, and IMS bearing solution have been installed and that a brake system overhaul was completed within the last 500 miles including new pads and rotors.

@Mercyhealth Good suggestion, and you are correct that you can find a nice donor to build from for about $50K. Our car is built more in the spirit of chassis/power balance and the joy of rwd dynamics, especially when you are off the tarmac.
@JDMX274 I’m intrigued about 996 safari conversions. Why stop at a C4 or C4S? Why not perform this transformation on a turbo there are plenty of them out there. And It appears the value of the gen 5 turbos is NOT appreciated. So you can get one for almost nothing today compared to it’s real value and racing engine provenance. And of course you get the all wheel drive benefit.

@BenGerman car has minimal road miles since the build was completed, no off-road miles. I do not believe the bore was scoped as part of the donor car inspection, but will confirm with the builder. He has aspirations to build multiple examples of his Valkyrie Overland creation based on customer demand.
How many miles was the car driven since the conversion? How many of those miles off road?
Was the engine bore scoped during the recent upgrades?

@GTBman Yes, in the frunk under the cover is a space saver OEM spare tire. Also, the car retains a stock drivetrain/exhaust system and will pass CA smog without issue.
A couple of questions. What is in the frunk under a cover? Looks like a spare wheel? Would this Porsche pass California smog? TIA
@Blubusdrvr yes, I took it to Hunt Valley Horsepower a few weeks ago. Car got a lot of positive admiration from Manny and the PCA guys. Mike L. from TPC Racing thought it was very cool! I was at HVH with a different car this morning.
While this one isn't for me it seems like a cool build. (I agree a C4 would've made sense) I love the seats. This would've gotten some attention up at Hunt Valley Horsepower - Coffee and Cars this am!

@sklbse yes, C4 makes for a great setup, mega traction. The builder of this car plans to build more Valkyrie Overlands and I will pass on the feed back to use a C4 or even C4S donor with the next build.
@bemoryusn I own a 2000 996 C4 with the same Elephant Safari kit, but different wheels and tires. So much fun to rip around town, draws smiles and thumbs up left and right! I took it out in the snow this winter - what a blast!

I wish this was a C4. I live in Alaska and modifying a 911 like this is the dream goal. As someone stated, the Dakar is what I'd want, but can't touch one of those for a while.

@JDMX274 that’s what I thought. So assuming the original car was FREE the real value of this 911 is quite high. Like I said it’s not your average 996 from Autotrader.
@Mercyhealth I spoke with the builder/owner of the car and he has approximately $40K in parts and $25K in labor invested to complete the project.

@nba19002 Yes, the engine is stock and the exhaust is the factory sport exhaust system.

The satisfaction of irritating Porsche purists must be high with this car.
@RASno7 thanks for the information. I don’t think most people know how costly these modifications/replacements can be. This is not a 25-35k dollar car with all the work done. It is worth so much more. These 20 plus year old 911s with miles need new suspension, brakes, rotors, etc. which makes them much more desirable.
@Mercyhealth the Elephant Racing Safari kit starts around $13k for the 996. That’s just the suspension bits … not wheels, lights, rack or crash bars.
@Mercyhealth I will confirm with PCarMarket on the best way to add the costs associated with the Safari build. Stay tuned.

IMO this 996 has a better look than the 992 Dakar which is a quarter million and probably impossible to obtain. There are plenty of 996s around few like your 911.

Just realized I've been to your shop! About a year ago you had a 996 for sale and I had illusions of fitting two car seats in the back seat. You were nice enough to let me try to fit them. Plus you were great with my son while he and I look around at all the cool cars you had. Still waiting for my kids to grow out of the full car seats and into boosters.
