Up for auction is a rare and desirable 2002 Porsche 996 Targa.  This example features exclusive factory options as well as a manual transmission making for an extremely enjoyable driving experience.  Spending its entire life in CA until mid 2018, it is now being offered by a private seller in New York at NO RESERVE with just over 100k miles on the odometer.

The factory Arctic Silver Metallic paint is stated to be in good condition with well below-average wear.   The included CARFAX report does show a damage reported to the rear bumper prior to the seller's ownership.  The seller found no sign of any major collision and felt comfortable purchasing this extremely clean and well-sorted CA car.  Detailed exterior photos are provided in the photo gallery along with recent paint meter readings.

A staple in Porsche history, the 996 Targa features a unique hatch design with a full-glass panoramic sun-roof.  This not only provides the 996 with a more eye-catching silhouette but offers for easier daily usage and drivability. This example rides on a set of 18" OEM Sport Classic II wheels that wear new Continental Summer tires.  The seller notes that the original alloy wheels will also be included in the sale.

Inside, you will find a highly optioned Graphite Grey leather interior that shows very well for its age and mileage.  With an original MSRP of over $86k, some noteworthy factory features include an advanced technic package, heated/powered front seats, aluminum interior package, and an AM/FM radio with CD player.  All electronics and accessories are said to be in working order.

This 996 is powered by its factory 3.6L M96 flat-six engine that is capable of producing a healthy 320 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.  Power is delivered by way of a desirable 6-speed manual transmission that is enhanced by an upgraded 997 Shift linkage kit making for a sportier driving experience.  The seller states that the IMS bearing has been replaced by the previous owner although there is no receipt available. This 996 is said to be in great running condition with a brand-new set of Pagid brake pads and rotors installed at 92k miles.

The sale will include two keys, all books, service records, tools, a spare tire, a Carfax report, and a set of original wheels. Don't miss your chance to own a well-sorted, rare Targa version of what is quickly becoming one of the most coveted modern 911 models.

@Renman57 Hi! I have no record of either being done, however the clutch engages perfectly with zero slip and there is zero seep from RMS.

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@craig66 haha where were you BEFORE I decided to sel?!

  • Renman57 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Do you know when the clutch or If the rear man seal has ever been replaced?

  • craig66 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@levinborn So here’s a great deal, you park your car in my parking lot in New Jersey for the next 11 months and I will take REAL good care of it ?

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@craig66 no impending work beyond an oil service within next 1,000 miles (based on servicing every 5K). I have an OEM air-oil separator that I planned on doing as a preventative measure, that will come with the car. As far as I could tell from research, the spacing on the hood mechanism is an eye-balling thing. I took a contract in Rwanda and spend 11 months a year there now, hence the sale. Have loved the car, but spending 500 bucks a month on storage in NYC seems unecessary.

  • craig66 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@levinborn Do you know of any impending work that needs to be done on the car?
Routine service wise or repair wise?
Do you have the instructions for the oem hood release that explains the spacing.
Any specific reason for selling after just 18 months?

    Thanks

@craig66 A frunk party sounds much better than the two hours I spent trying to simultaneously hold the lid in a certain position whilst tightening the allen key haha. Easy job with two people, and it can be set - two or three small screws can be loosened and tightened at will to align it perfectly. Just takes patience and a friend.

  • craig66 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@levinborn Is the spacing on the frunk something that could be re done with two or three people helping you or is it set at this point.
You should have had a frunk party and invited some helpers although maybe you did and there were too many beers

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@ANeillie heya! Yes, the roof works perfectly, as does the interior sun screen. I did a re-oiling maintenance when I bought the car and it has always worked smoothly and never made any creaks or squeaks.

Does the targa top slide back? You posted a picture of it closed, and another one of the "hatchback" open, but I didn't see one of the targa slid back into the back.

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@craig66 no worries, super normal question haha - as it states IMS was replaced by previous owner. Without receipts the only way to confirm is by de-coupling the 'box from the motor. My intention was to confirm with pics when the clutch needed replacement, but not a peep so far. I trusted the previous owner.

My apologies I did not see that IMS was replaced as per prior owner.

  • craig66 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Also this question is inevitable and so lets get it over with:
Any work on the IMS and RMS and do you per chance have a DME showing over Revs
I know the most annoying questions but in the 996 so necessary

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@craig66 car is at the PCARMARKET space in Oyster Bay - you are more than welcome to go see it! Ask for Adam or James.

  • craig66 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

If I was interested in seeing the car, where in NY are you?

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@craig66 also zero leaking from roof, which works perfectly.

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@craig66 hey Craig66 - yes, I replaced the release mechanism three months ago since the old one conked out (super common issue). I bought an OEM unit from FCP Euro and fitted it myself. When you fit the mechanism there is some play in the spacing that is super hard to get right when you're one person, hence the slight mis-alignment. Thanks for the question, let me know how else I can help.

  • craig66 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

    Couple of questions.
    Beautiful car.
The Frunk hood looks on a couple of the pictures as if it is not properly lined up. Is that just the pictures or is it so in real ?
Is there any leaking from the Roof?

    Thanks

  • levinborn (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Just noticed that the odometer in the photos reads the mileage in Kilometers. This is a setting that can be adjusted through the on-board computer. Mileage is 101K miles, or about 160K kilometers. What is written in the ad is accurate.
