Up for auction is this 2002 Porsche 996 Turbo Coupe finished in Basalt Black Metallic over a black full leather interior.  Purchased by the current owner in 2007 as a stock 6-speed example, this Turbo has since undergone extensive performance upgrades and modifications which have been thoroughly documented and carried out by reputable Porsche specialists.  The cabin has been outfitted with Recaro bucket seats, safety harnesses, and a roll cage, and the exterior has been modified with a GT Cup style splitter, a sunroof delete, and a carbon fiber rear wing.  The suspension and braking system have been thoroughly upgraded, and the transmission has been fully rebuilt and upgraded along with the engine including GT2 intercoolers, Carillo rods, Mahle pistons, a TiAL Alpha 28 turbo system, and much more.  With just under 38k miles showing on the odometer, this generously equipped 996 Turbo is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee.

This 996 is finished in Basalt Black Metallic and features upgraded aerodynamic components including a GT Cup style front splitter, carbon fiber dive planes, an APR Carbon Fiber GTC-300 rear wing, and adjustable aluminum uprights.  Carbon fiber mirror covers were also added along with removable matte black paint protection film over the hood and roof.  The sunroof has been deleted and replaced with a solid metal panel, and CARFAX shows front end damage to have occurred in 2008 which is said to have resulted in the replacement and refinishing of the front bumper and hood.  Some small rock chips are also noted on the lower front fascia, additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This Turbo rides on 19" black-painted Champion wheels dressed in Bridgestone tires dated from 2018.

Inside, the cabin has been modified for track use and outfitted with a GMG half roll cage and Recaro SPG Pole Position bucket seats along with Schroth 6-point safety harnesses and BK Auto fixed mount rails and uprights.  The rear seats have been removed and a Rennline pedal set has been added in addition to an aftermarket Bluetooth stereo and custom 3-spoke leather steering wheel wrapped in black perforated leather and Alcantara.  The original 3-point seatbelts are said to remain functional along with all other gauges and accessories.

The coveted 3.6L twin-turbocharged Mezger flat-six engine has been rebuilt by Pat Williams Racing and upgraded with Carillo rods, Mahle pistons, GT2 intercoolers and injectors, GT2 oil pump and lines, a performance ECU tune, BMC air filter, a Switzer exhaust with installable catalytic converters, and a TiAL Alpha 28 turbo system.  The 6-speed manual transmission has also been rebuilt by Goldcrest Motorsports with GT2 gearing, a new Sachs GT2 clutch and pressure plate, a new synchro ring set, release, and pilot bearings.  Upgrades to the suspension include a high-performance alignment and corner balance, MCS 2-way adjustable remote reservoirs, Hypercoil springs, GT2 sway bars, and Tarett camber plates and drop links.  Stopping power is handled by custom-built GT3 brake calipers paired with 2-piece AP floating rotors.  All of the upgrades and modifications have been carried out by reputable Porsche specialists and a collection of detailed records is said to accompany the sale. The engine rebuild was carried out in 2016 at 33,849 miles and the transmission rebuild was performed in October of 2020 at 37,260 miles.

This sale will include a collection of service records and a clean title.  Offering performance far beyond any stock 996 Turbo, this thoroughly upgraded 6-speed 2002 example is just waiting for its next owner to get behind the wheel and enjoy.

Worst for me I have to wash my car to take it to the cars and coffee tomorrow, those turbo hollow wheels accumulate quite a bit of brake dust. Anyway according to my wife I have to wear an “Americana shirt
So that they don’t think I’m
A wetback”. I can care less I speak three languages, I
    Traveled to
Over 110 countries of this world and I have dealt with all kinds of people. Better yet I retired at 45 , I’m 53 today, No worries.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@luis.seneriz That's funny, I have a Dodge 3500 and Cayenne as daily drivers. This car will never get anything close to dollars spent but that is the way it works. We don't do it to sell it we do it because it make my car bad-ass!!! I've reached out to PCAR to see if we can counter offer on the high bids. We want to sell the car and we were not too far off the reserve. Unfortunately we could not adjust the reserve in the final moments when the bidding got closer. If you don't mind PCAR will reach out to see if we can find a middle ground between reserve and your high bid. Stay close and they will be in touch.

Matt I was a fast and the furious guy. HPA built me a 2004 VW R32 twin turbo putting 655 to the ground with a bunch of all other mods. It was super satisfying taking this car to Sealy Texas, now Hennessy headquarters and spank cars that have been brought in in trailers. This was a purposely built car. I appreciate that, now that’s a VW, we are talking Porsche’s here. I personally like the modified cars, my experience is and has been that the owners never get what they put in. I sold that car in 2013
And since then I have been driving F 150s supercrews.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@luis.seneriz I used to be a purist until I started building race cars. Manufacturers have regulators and investors that dictate much of what they do. Race shops and fabricators are not limited so there are better, faster, stronger aftermarket options. For certain collectible cars there is value in originality. I don't see the mainstream 996 models as collectible so lets make them better. There was a lot of room to make the 996 better from Porsche. Just look at the value of a 1998 993 Carrera and the 1999 Carrera. Hardly comparable cars but still the same model and manufacturer. Thank you for the interest and bids on the turbo. I appreciate you very much.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@LordVenn Thank you for the bid, I appreciate your interest in the turbo. It really is an amazing car. It gets lots of attention everywhere it goes and is a blast to drive. It pulls so good it makes me giggle. I almost busted-out laughing in the video but I tried to keep it professional. Thanks again for the bidding. I appreciate it very much.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@luis.seneriz Well the turbo has a well built motor and well built transmission with new clutch that have all been proven on the track. It is a street car that has a lot of track mods but I would not have a problem driving the turbo across the country. It was built for performance and reliability. You can even drive it in the snow! Thanks for the question and good luck.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis Don’t know brand of radio but cheap, lightweight, bluetooth 50w/channel. I have the original if the winner wants it.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis The console button was in the console cavity underneath. Snapped solid back into place. Looks as it should. Also metered the paint. 3.5 - 4.5 across all panels without film. The hood and top were 12.5 - 14.5. The Elcometer digital report was sent to PCAR to post with the auction. Thanks for the inquiries. Best wishes to the bidders.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis The plug has probably fallen into the center console cavity. Honestly, I didn't even notice. I may have done it getting pictures. It's tight quarters that requires gymnastic moves to get good interior photos. I will investigate tonight. I have not received the RennKit module yet. It was ordered after the auction started. I have no idea shipping time, although I got an email confirmation of the order being shipped on Tuesday, July 13th. On the Emissions I updated PCAR on the OBDII scan and monitor "Ready" status. The most recent emissions test was successfully completed and recorded in April of 2021.

    @Krazyoneis hole not whole....lol

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

What brand stereo is it? Do u have the missing button to fill whole in ctr console? Any luck clearing wing error msg?

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis Hey Man, that's what this forum is for. I appreciate PCAR for allowing the exchange so buyers can fully understand the condition of cars offered remotely. I've been on both sides and I really appreciate this format. I wish all cars were sold relative to condition and not just based on market value. Happy to answer any further questions. I appreciate all the comments and especially appreciate the bidders. Thank you and good luck.

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@MattShaw thx for indulging all the questions.... Much appreciated...

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis To clarify on the pain condition. I think it would be fair to paint meter the turbo. Sorry I didn't do it initially. I will get readings and to PCARMARKET. Overall paint condition is very good . There are stone bruises on the bumper cover and splitter. The hood and top have excellent paint which is why the hood and roof were wrapped.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis The sunroof was deleted and replaced with factory roof panel. Front and rear glass was removed. Top was painted then wrapped. Factory Alcantara liner was also installed. And yes, it was expensive as hell! The receipts are included in the log $5Kish.

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis sunroof delete. Damn tiny buttons on my iphone...lol

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@VOC4S It is recorded on the CarFax the Turbo passed emissions testing in April 2021. The cats were NOT on the car at the time. I will check monitors and post to PCAR. Emissions on turbo cars without cats can be tricky because of the rich fuel status. Driving the turbo normally through a drive-cycle usually sets all monitors to “Ready”. Driving it under hard boost (rich condition) can send unspent fuel to the rear O2 monitors and it will exceed the hydrocarbon limit.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@VOC4S I will run emissions status via OBDII later today and post to PCAR. The turbo is currently tagged and has been registered In an emissions requirIng TN county for the past 10 years. I think that is recoded on the CarFax under TN Inspection.

@M3brendan Thanks for the comment. It is a lot of fun running with our group. At some point I expect we will all have some form of GT3. Been crazy to see the evolution over the years. Think back to when we first started. Four banger, front engine BMW’s & Porsche’s. Nose to tale good times!!!

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@luis.seneriz Sorry, the original seats are not available.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis its capable of 650 hp with Full boost at 1.4 bar. Currently running 1.1 bar which should be 550ish hp.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis With 1.4 bar boost it puts out 650 hp. It is currently tuned for the track with 1.1 bar @ 550 hp. It was dynoed @ 650 by PWR when rebuilt. When the MCS suspension was added Goldcrest Motorsports, a Grand Am winning race team, recommended pulling back the boost to 1.1 bar for more linear power delivery. They put their tune on it and have kept the setup ever since.

  • luis.seneriz (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

What’s the horsepower? Do you still have original seats, front rear.

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@MattShaw what kind of hp does the car put out?

  • Robert.FU.Hastings 2 years, 9 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $22,996

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis we have emissions testing in Nashville and surrounding counties. The tuning is not crazy dump fuel and advance fire. It’s mostly GT2 components. It would likely pass emissions without changing the cats. I can run a monitor ready status and post to PCAR. I’d also install the cats if you want. Some buyers may want them on for emissions. Not a huge deal.

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@MattShaw is that something u would do if I bought car- replace cats? I always assumed there would be tuning required when adding cats- like when I add pipes to my track motorcycles. Not the same? When i live in TN i didnt remember having any smog tests but CA has serious smog tests.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis Thanks for the heads-up on the PCNA coding. I was not able to do it with Durametric. I have a PST2 and I don’t think I can do it with it either. Maybe Dealer?

I like the GT2 wing too. This one is fully functional With infinite adjustment. Makes a huge difference at speed, especially Road Atlanta and NCM. We do some Barber too but it does not have the 140-150 straights.

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis I have passed Tennessee MARTA emissions with the cats on. They are pretty easy to swap. The exhaust is designed for cats or bypass. I have both options which go with the car. Bypasses are currently on the car. To pass emissions you swap the bypasses and ready monitors through drive cycle.

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Krazyoneis i replaced mine with the GT2 wing- which I’d also do to this one if I won the bidding. Have the same tail on wife’s 04 C4S as well and its a gr9 look!

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

I had a similar problem with my porsche Panamera GTS. I hated the rear end look and the gadgety wing that deploys/retracts at 40 mph. I was told by porsche national there was a pc fix for Carreras but not one for the Panamera GTS as folks didnt change them out as much as those who owned Carerras. My solution was to remove the gear inside the motor so i wouldnt get the error msg. I think your solution is easily solved with a pc patch form PCA..

  • Krazyoneis (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Shall I assume that the cars’ mods will preclude it from passing smog tests here in Commi fornia?

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@JCC0016 Thanks for the questions. To clarify the light is from the hydraulic wing that is now fixed! It cones on at 40 mph. Resets after every start. I think there is a module I can buy to fix or turn it off with PST2. Any guidance from readers would be appreciated.

The coolant lines were welded vs pinned back when the motor was out. It should be in the receipt log. There are quite a few to sort through. In retrospect I would only include significant work receipts. Anything ever done to the turbo was included. Too much to sort through for readers. Sorry. Learning as I list.

  • JCC0016 2 years, 9 monthsago

Are there any lights on the dash? It looked like there was and assume it is for malfunctioning rear spoiler? Were the coolant lines address with the rebuild? Pinned or welded? Thanks

  • MattShaw (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Thanks for viewing the 996 Turbo. This is a very fast Porsche Street/Track car built for reliability! There has been no expense spared. The documentation log (attached is full of detailed performance upgrades. I would encourage viewers to scroll through the records, especially the bigger build sheets to answer any questions. I am happy to provide any information beyond the documentation if available. Thank you PCARMARKET for doing a thorough job on the front end to provide pictures, videos, documentation and interviews to provided as much disclosure of condition as possible. Please let me know if I can assist further. Enjoy the auction and best wishes to bidders.
