Offered for auction is this 2002 Porsche 996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet finished in Guards Red over Savanna Beige.  The 2002 model year saw updated styling for the Carrera along with the introduction of a larger flat-six engine. This all-wheel-drive Cabriolet was ordered with a 6-speed manual transmission, optional supple leather seats, 18” light-alloy wheels, the Parking Assist System, and a matching removable hardtop. Fortified with a replacement engine under warranty, this 996 is now being offered for auction by its original owner out of California showing just under 100k miles on the odometer.

Sporting a traditional Guards Red finish, this 996 comes equipped with a matching removable hardtop, retractable black cabriolet roof, and optional 18” light alloy Carrera wheels with colored Porsche crests.  Compared to a standard Carrera, the all-wheel-drive model features special titanium-colored brake calipers and a rear matching model designation.  The car rides on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport N3 tires dated from 2015 in front and 2012 in the rear  As shown on the CARFAX report, a low-speed collision occurred in 2010 causing minor damage and subsequent repairs to the front bumper and passenger-side fender. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with the full CARFAX report.

The Savanna Beige interior comes fitted with optional heated and power-operated seats trimmed in supple leather upholstery.  Minimal signs of wear are noted, and the seller reports the entire air conditioning system was replaced by Hoehn Porsche of Carlsbad, California, in 2020.  A complete list of factory options is provided below:

  • 411      18" Lt Alloy Carrera Wheel
  • 446      Wheel Caps with Colored Crest
  • 635      Parking Assist System
  • 982      Supple Leather Front and Rear
  • G1       Guards Red
  • M6S     Savanna Beige Floor Mats
  • P05      Advanced Technic Package
  • P11      Self-Dim Mirrors & Rain Sensor
  • P14      Heated Front Seats Package
  • P15      Power Seat Package
  • SC        Savanna Beige Leather Seats

The naturally aspirated 3.6L flat-six engine produces up to 320 HP and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission that drives all four wheels.  The IMS bearing is said to have failed during the car’s initial warranty period and the engine was replaced by Rector Porsche in Burlingame, California. Additional maintenance history is shown on the CARFAX report and the seller states all scheduled service has been kept up to date.

This sale will include the original owner's manuals, toolkit, and a clean title. A one-owner lifelong California car, this 6-speed Carrera 4 just might be the 996 Cabriolet you've been waiting for.

@buccicone Hello and thank you for your question. To the best of our memory, the engine in the vehicle was replaced prior to 2006. The fact that the replaced engine is working fine with no smoke, no leaks and no evidence metal fragments in the oil indicate you could possibly get another 100,000 miles from this fun to drive vehicle.

  • buccicone (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

@seller can you provide the date of the engine replacement? If it was 2006 or later, the larger diameter IMS bearing was used by Porsche on all M97/97 motors and has a much better track record for reliability than the previous single row original bearing.

  • 663336 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

@GPK49 I guess we might not be able to have the pics of the work order for the repair uploaded, so I was wondering if you could just type it up in a post?

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@Schwebby66 Hello and thanks again for your questions. The vehicle has no leaks whatsoever. The gallery pictures when magnified cover all the areas you mentioned. If I take additional photos, there is no guarantee Pcarmarket will post them today for you to see. The vehicle is very clean for its age. The bottom of the front bumper has scratches resulting from contact with concrete parking blocks. There are small stone chips on the mirrors that you can see in gallery pictures and there is a small scratch is on the passenger side panel under the back window resulting from an inconsiderate person is a parking lot.

  • Schwebby66 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

Any signs of oil leaks, and can you please take detailed pics of the front bumper scuffs, mirrors, and all clear blemishes in the paint, as well as close up pics on all wheels..? Greatly appreciated!

  • 663336 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    @GPK49 Thanks that's helpful

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@663336 Hello, The last oil change was 3/14/22 at Porsche Carlsbad with 99234 miles.
Prior oil change was 4/11/18 at Eurospec Automotive Service in Escondido with 97300 miles. Brake fluid also changed. Water pump replaced at Hoehne Porsche 11/16 at 97718 miles. I believe the 90k check up was done at Eurospec Automotive on 2/15 at 86000 miles.
I also have a copy of the Repair Order for collision repair dated 8/9/2010. I will take photos of it and have it posted. Please let me know if you have other questions.

  • 663336 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

The ad says "all scheduled service has been kept up to date", but could you confirm when was the last oil change and who did it, and confirm that the transmission oil, differential oil and spark plugs changes (90k miles scheduled maintenance) were done and when?

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@663336 Hello and thank you for your inquiry. It is possible we have a work order for the collision repair. My wife has old records in storage and she will take a look. I should know later today if she finds it.

@Schwebby66 I did take another look. No stickers anywhere.

  • Schwebby66 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    @GPK49 Thank you for trying…
So there is no sticker indicating IMS replacement, like from LN or ??? It seems they are placed on the rear truck lid or door jambs…
    Thanks again.

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@Schwebby66 The Porsche dealership purges their records after seven years and we do not have records at home from that far back. Because of the number of miles on the car, the service technician stated that the proof is that if the bearings were bad, they would have failed by now if they were an issue. Failure normally comes early. The oil in the vehicle was changed regularly and the engine was never redlined. It would be a shame to miss out on owning this beauty because of the low odds of a problem with the bearings.

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@Schwebby66 Hello and thank you for you inquiry. I will get in touch with the dealership and see what I can find out in regard to verification of the IMS.

  • Schwebby66 (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

I m interested and willing to buy a high mileage 996-4 Cab…BUT verification of the IMS on the new engine is critical.
Can you please provide thru your records or dealer who replaced engine? Thx!

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@picachones On second thought, it is not fair to bidders in other areas of the country who rely on auction information and cannot see the vehicle. I am happy to provide additional pictures and information as requested to help you make a decision. Thank you for your interest.

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@picachones What a coincidence. We live in No. County. Not much freight cost for you. Maybe we can set a time for you to take a look.

  • picachones (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    I live in San Diego
    Could I visit it?

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@picachones Engine was replaced with a new IMS bearings. To the best of my knowledge the dealer upgraded the IMS bearing system but I cannot say for sure.

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@picachones Hello and thank you for your question. We do have a good number of the original service records but not all. Carfax also notes detailed service history from 2007 through the current date. Service provided prior to 2007 is stamped in the Maintenance book.

  • picachones (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    @GPK49 Does the IMS upgraded?

  • picachones (registered bidder) 2 years, 1 monthago

    Do you have sevice records?

  • GPK49 (seller) 2 years, 1 monthago

@dmac64 Hello and thank you for the questions. The car was under warranty and under 10,000 miles when the engine failed. There is no knocking, grinding or oil leaks indicating any issues with the IMS bearing on the replacement engine. The clutch is original.

  • dmac64 2 years, 1 monthago

Hello. Can you tell me how many miles were on the car when engine was replaced, and how many miles on the replacement engine? Also do you know which bearing was used and if clutch has ever been changed out?
    Thanks much. She’s a beauty.

    Hi Everyone,
Welcome to the auction of this Porsche Carrera 4 Cabriolet.
My wife is a Porsche enthusiast who owned two previous 911's and a 944 prior to purchasing this vehicle in 2002. This car has only been in California and has been meticulously cared for.
Please let me know if there are any specific requests or questions I can answer.
