Among the rarest variants of the Porsche 996 generation, the Targa model features a unique sliding glass roof system and an opening rear hatch. This 2002 example is finished in Guards Red and has a 6-speed manual transmission. It was purchased by the seller, a VW master technician, in 2022 and has since undergone extensive service along with modifications including Ceika coilovers, custom floor mats, a fixed rear spoiler, 18” Kinesis wheels, muffler deletes, a K&N cold air intake, an LN Engineering oil filter conversion, and more. Showing just over 82k miles on the odometer, this Targa is now being offered for auction out of California.

This 996 Carrera Targa features a “greenhouse” roof system with a sliding glass roof panel, a power-operated sunshade, and an opening rear hatch. This example is finished in Guards Red and has been modified with a fixed rear spoiler, tinted front lenses, LED parking lights, window tint, and 18” Kinesis wheels with spacers. The car rides on Achilles ATR Sport tires in front and Nitto Invo tires in the rear, all showing 2021 date codes. The previous owner indicated that the car was completely refinished under their ownership and the seller states a ceramic coating was applied in 2022. Some paint peeling is noted near the junction of the rear spoiler and decklid. Other imperfections include scrapes on the lower front bumper and some rock chips on the rear spoiler, hood, driver’s side fender, and bumper covers. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black interior includes custom floor mats, hydro-dipped instrument cluster trim, and a black Alcantara shift boot with red stitching. The car is also equipped with power windows and mirrors, automatic climate control, cruise control, a central locking system, an onboard computer, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, and a CR-220 stereo.

A naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 320 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Under current ownership, the car has been modified with muffler deletes, a K&N cold air intake, and an LN Engineering oil filter conversion. The original mufflers and airbox are included with the sale. The alternator, belt, and air/oil separator were replaced under prior ownership. In 2022, the seller performed a transmission, brake, and clutch fluid flush along with replacements of the spark plugs wiper blades, oil, oil filter, and a wheel alignment. A Blackstone Laboratories oil analysis is also said to have been performed. The car was also fitted with an updated coolant cap and a Rennline aluminum pedal joint. The air filter was cleaned in 2023 and a new battery was installed in 2024 (2021 date code).

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a battery charger, the original airbox and mufflers, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I looked long and hard for the specific model and color combo, you don’t see a Guards Red on black 6-speed Targa very often. Since I’ve taken ownership of this vehicle it has been babied and cared for. I’m a master technician for Volkswagen and have performed all the maintenance, repairs, and mods on the vehicle.”

@Fortun3 thank you! Imo stance is what really make a car but everyone has their perfect stance. I wanted to keep the car simple and clean.

@Nortonlo Attached photos of the drivers side and passenger side front seat backs and bottoms. No tears present. Also attached deck deck lid where rear spoiler meets. Sorry pictures uploaded sideways for some reason. Hope this helps!

@Nortonlo I’ll try to get some more pics, cars at storage/shop where it sleeps. As for the cup holder facia it is missing, was missing when I bought the vehicle. Cup holder still functional though. As far as record history of the seats, no I don’t. There are no rips or tears in the seats and I’ll try to get closer pictures asap of the driver side bolster wear. Hope this helps.

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 3 days, 8 hoursago

@tomob30 it’s does have a short shifter kit, factory ssk. As for the 2 holes the previous owner had a custom phone holder that was in place there but then he removed it.

  • Nortonlo (registered bidder) 3 days, 14 hoursago

@GRTarga02 can we get some close up pictures of the peeling paint around the deck lid? Also, it looks like the cover for the cup holders is missing / broken off? Do you have any record of the history of those seats? Does the passenger seat have a couple of lacerations in the seat bottom? Hard to tell if those are cuts that go through the leather or not. I'd love one more clear shot of the wear on the drivers side bolster and seat bottom.

  • tomob30 (registered bidder) 3 days, 14 hoursago

    Couple random questions:
Is there a short shift kit or something? The shifter boot looks kinda baggy.
What’s with the two little holes in the dash button on the bottom left (usually heated seats I think)?

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 4 days, 1 hourago

    * no overspray from what I can see

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 4 days, 1 hourago

    @Nortonlo replied in gwistrup comments

    Thanks!

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 4 days, 1 hourago

@gwistrup no over spray. From what I can see, it was a windows/seals out respray.

THe finish is glassy. There are imperfections where the wing meets the bootlid from it getting molded on. Thats noted in the listing”
So the paint work was done not from the previous owner but the one before that. Previous owner stated that the guy saw some fading and re-did the whole vehicle ( no accident work ). I have no other info on how the work was done, prepped and process.

    Hope this helps.

  • Nortonlo (registered bidder) 4 days, 2 hoursago

@GRTarga02 one more question, do you have any more information about the paint work that was done under previous ownership? Was the car stripped and painted? Any information about why this process was undertaken?
    Thanks for taking these questions.

  • gwistrup 4 days, 7 hoursago

Could you elaborate on the paint on the vehicle? Is there any evidence of the paint job such as overspray in any of the door jambs, trunk opening, or rear compartment? Were all of the exterior items such as trim and moldings removed prior to the refinishing? Is there any dust, orange peel, or dry spray in the finish? Is the quality of the finish equivalent to the OEM?

@Nortonlo I contacted ceika and told them what i was mainly going to use the targa for. Told them I wanted something with a bit or both, comfy but sporty when I needed. They set me up with the type 1m with 6k front and 8k rear spring rates. Then I added the optional helper springs and optimal tophats. Hope this helps.

  • Nortonlo (registered bidder) 4 days, 14 hoursago

@GRTarga02 can you give me some more information on your setup process when order the coilovers? I understand they are somewhat custom designed for individual orders and would like to get a sense for this setup.

@TexasTRex got it, I’ll take measurements sometime today when I get a video of the top operation.

  • TexasTRex (registered bidder) 5 days, 7 hoursago

@GRTarga02 I understand height can be adjusted, wanting to know what ground clearance is now as you have it in the photos taken. In other words, what height of speed bump will it clear as it is currently adjusted (lower front bumper to ground)?

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 5 days, 7 hoursago

@SolsticeHonesdale I’ll get that sometime today

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 5 days, 7 hoursago

@TexasTRex do you want a measurement from the side down? Coilovers are adjustable so if the height is not to you liking it can be raised.

  • SolsticeHonesdale 5 days, 7 hoursago

Can you show us how the Targa roof works

  • TexasTRex (registered bidder) 5 days, 8 hoursago

What is the ground clearance with coilovers as currently set?

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 5 days, 23 hoursago

@Nortonlo added a photo of the coilovers prior to install. Height and dampening adjustments

@AdvJimbo thank you! Clutch has no slipping of any kind and grabs well. I performed the muffler delete for the sound not performance. This tips fit the look I was going for as well. I do have the factory mufflers still if desired. As far as wind noise when the top is opened doesn’t seem any different from a vehicle with an opened sunroof. Hope that helps!

  • AdvJimbo (registered bidder) 1 week, 1 dayago

Goodness that’s pretty. Where do things stand re: clutch life? Forgive my lack of mechanical knowledge but why “muffler delete” and what are the ramifications? Also, can you comment on wind noise with the top retracted? Thanks!

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 1 week, 1 dayago

@ArtVandelay I do not have the original wheels but I do have the stock air box and factory mufflers.

  • ArtVandelay (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

You have the original wheels? or any other original parts that were replaced with mods? Appreciate it.

  • GRTarga02 (seller) 1 week, 2 daysago

@Bilinski4447 Ims bearing has not been performed. When I purchased the targa the first this I did was perform a blackstone lab analysis and came back with good results.

  • Bilinski4447 (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

    IMS bearing work?
