This 2002 Porsche 986 Boxster S comes finished in Guards Red over a black partial leather interior and pairs its 3.2-liter flat-six engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox. It was optioned from the factory with 18” SportDesign wheels as well as the Heated Front Seats Package, Xenon Headlamp Package, and exclusive Guards Red seatbelts. This 986 was acquired by the current owner about 6 years ago and features an upgraded sport exhaust system as well as an updated IMS bearing and a host of notable service items. Showing just over 59k miles on the odometer, this Boxster S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee.

Compared to an entry-level 986, the top-of-the-line Boxster S can be visually distinguished by its grey front air intake grilles, matte silver rear lettering, dual center exhaust tips, and red-painted brake calipers. This example comes finished in traditional Guards Red with factory optioned 18” SportDesign wheels and colored Porsche crest center caps. These BBS-manufactured wheels were dressed in a set of new Continental ExtremeContact tires upon the seller’s purchase 6 years ago. The front bumper is said to have been refinished for cosmetic purposes and the seller notes the car has always been garage-kept, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing damage to the left-rear end in 2005.

The black partial leather interior is accented by “Boxster S” logo door sills and factory-exclusive seatbelts in Guards Red. Other equipment includes a three-spoke steering wheel, heated seats, an upgraded Kenwood Bluetooth stereo, and black carpet floor mats with embroidered red logos.

This Boxster S carries a mid-mounted 3.2-liter flat-six engine that delivers up to 250 HP and 225 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. Stopping power comes from fixed 4-piston brake calipers paired with ventilated, cross-drilled discs at each corner. An upgraded sport exhaust system has been installed and the original factory components are also said to accompany the sale. Noteworthy service items include the installation of an upgraded IMS bearing, a new rear main seal, ignition switch, convertible top cable, a new alternator, a serpentine belt, spark plugs, and half-shaft boots.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, service records, and a clean title.

better than a back seat, it has 2 trunks. The back one is perfect for keeping a 18" Pizza hot while you return from in store pick up!

Bidding to follow along and hope to buy, Seems like a nice car, I have owned 3 Boxsters and four 911's in the past few years. Sold my red Boxster S in trade for a 911, but still wishing I had it, The only Boxster problem is no back seat for groceries.. and the need to remove several panels to access the engine.

@Artdeckco I echo your concerns. Disabling damage is noted on the Carfax which means it had to be towed after the accident. The sellers comments are certainly reassuring, but it sure would be nice to have some pictures from underneath, particularly of the left rear where the accident occurred.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, although the bluebook on this is 13 to 17 K, I suspect this will go for a good bit more.

  • scttgrnwll (seller) 1 year, 7 monthsago

@Artdeckco the rear spoiler deploys at 70mph and works perfectly, or you can deploy it manually. the car drives as tight as a new one no rattles or any noise car has been inspected several times on the rack with no problems or talk of frame issues these repairs were done over 17 years ago if there were a problem they would have shown up by now, I promise you there is nothing wonky about this car the picture s don't do it justice whoever gets this car will be very happy

  • Artdeckco (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

I still cannot get over how fabulous this car looks for its age. I have just a few more questions before bidding. Does the tail lift that is just behind the trunk?

The tolerances between body pieces is something Porsche is fanatical about, and something a little wonky at the rear of your car. I'm not really concerned about the look, but I just want to be certain that you have heard nothing about the frame being out all alignment, or being straightened previously. Have you heard any discussion about the car's frame from anyone looking at your car, prior owners?

Final question. When you drive over bumps in the road, does the car sound tight, or like the that the suspension is loose? A loose suspension sounds more like a clang of metal on metal.

    Again, thank you kindly

@NHPorscheguy that's about right they were installed right before i bought the car in 2016 they look to be in great shape never spent a night outside great tread depth they have very few miles on them.

  • scttgrnwll (seller) 1 year, 7 monthsago

I do not have anything related to incident in 2005 other than car fax report the car has been up on lift many times and inspected with no issues. repairs are 17 years old paintwork is flawless

@scttgrnwll thanks on the RMS. Can you also help with the date codes on the tires. It looks on the picture that the tires are from 2015, which means they are 7 years old. Can you confirm that this is the case, and are the date codes the same for all 4 tires? You can find the 4 digit code after the DOT label on the tire. The first two numbers are the week the tires were produced, and the last two are the year. In addition to tread depth, the age of the tires are important. If they are 2015, they are getting close or at the point they should be replaced. Just want to be able to factor that in. Thanks. Again, a stunning car.

  • scttgrnwll (seller) 1 year, 7 monthsago

@NHPorscheguy rms done when ims was done as for tires lots of tread left don’t have a depth gage or I would check it

  • NHPorscheguy (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

I agree, great looking 986. I was also wondering about the RMS. Also, in addition to the tread depth can you also provide a date code for the tires? I wish you were a little closer to New Hampshire, but this is a great looking example and has me very tempted to take a road trip.

  • Artdeckco (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

Sorry for not proving before sending, but I hope you got the gist.

Your 2002 Boxster S looks to be in magnificent condition. I own a 2001 Boxster S contracted at Watkins Glen appear in New York about seven times and was see it for fantastically. Because I am intimately familiar with this vehicle, I also know the only major repair I had was replacing thee Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) and Rear Main Seal (RMS). This is a typical repair needed for these years. Do you know if this repair was conducted?

As far as the accident in 2005, two you have papers on the specifics, such as what needed to be repaired?

As far as I can tell, you have put 7000 miles on your tires. I Don't Know How Sticky the Continental tires are, but I had been known to change tires every 50,000 miles. Can you tell me how many __/32" are left front and back?

  • scttgrnwll (seller) 1 year, 7 monthsago

welcome to my auction I have never sold a car like this a little nervous and maybe you have never bought a car like this always in person. I have been an enthusiast for many years and this car shows it. It has been overly pampered and in great shape I think you would be hard pressed to find a nicer example so if you saw it in person, you would not be disappointed it drives tight and solid, I have upgraded many parts and it should be good to go for a long time I didn't mention a new 5-year battery about a month ago. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Thanks
