Now available for auction is this nicely presented 2003 Porsche 996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet finished in Black over a black standard leather interior.  Having spent its entire life in Texas, this 2003 example was purchased by its current owner in 2019 with approximately 5k miles driven since.  Factory equipped with a desirable 6-speed manual transmission, 18” light alloy Carrera wheels, the Bose High-End Sound Package, Porsche Crested headrests, and other premium features, this 996 commanded an original sticker price of over $89k and is now being offered for auction by its seller in Texas with just over 42k miles showing on the odometer.

This Carrera 4 is finished in Black and the paint is said to be in very good condition overall aside from a few minor chips.  The cabriolet top is reported to be working properly and with only slight signs of wear present, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX. Factory options on this example include Xenon headlamps and 18” light alloy Carrera wheels that are currently dressed Continental tires.

Inside, this Cabriolet sports a black standard leather interior that is described to be in great shape with all gauges and accessories working properly.  Premium factory features include heated front seats, Porsche crested headrests, and the Bose High-End Sound Package.  An aftermarket radio has been added along with a genuine Porsche wind stop, and the original Porsche stereo will also be included in the sale.

This second-generation 996 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.6 L flat-six engine that sends as much as 315 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque to all four wheels by way of a smooth 6-speed manual gearbox.  0-60 MPH is achieved in approximately 5 seconds while reaching a top speed of over 175 MPH.  Routine service is said to have been addressed by the current owner including a recent oil change and inspection at a Porsche dealer.  There is no record of an IMS bearing upgrade and some additional maintenance history is provided on CARFAX.  The only noted modification is a K&N air intake and this 996 is said to run and drive beautifully.

This sale will include a set of 2 keys, owner’s manuals, some service records from the current owner, a Porsche wind stop, the original radio, and a clean title.  With just over 42k miles showing on the odometer, this 6-speed Carrera 4 just might be the 996 you have been waiting for.

@daly944 I am sorry, but I do not know the brand of radar detector. It is located low on the front bumper, and it is functional.

Re: the tires, I do not have a measurement for the tread, but I estimate the front tires to be 75-80% and the rear tires to be 60-75%.

  • daly944 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Any measurements on remaining tire tread? What brand is the radar detector and is it still functional?

  • RMatt118 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@daly944 To my knowledge, it does not have the sports exhaust - there are no buttons or switches in the vehicle to actuate the system. The only item that has been added to the interior is a switch for a hidden radar alert system that has been installed to the car.

  • daly944 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Looks like it has the factory sport exhaust, is that accurate?

I will make the car available for PPI if necessary. If you want to see the car and live in the area, I can meet you at your convenience. If you live outside my area, I would pick you up at the airport. Depending upon the circumstances, I may be available to deliver the car to the successful bidder.

    Thanks for looking steveb109.

I had a lengthy discussion with my service advisor at Porsche North Houston regarding the IMS bearing. He saw on the vehicle history that the engine had been removed in 2008 and the rear seal and the flywheel were replaced by a Porsche dealer. He assured me that would have been the optimum time to replace the bearing if problems had been noted. He further assured me the if the bearing was about to fail, it would be noticeable - noise, vibration, etc. He also stated that statistics indicate about a 10% failure rate in the IMS for this generation of 911's.

Regarding the oil change, he said nothing unusual was noted during the service.

Thanks, Bsharo, for the comment. I have been surprised by comments regarding the "tear drop" headlights. They make look a little different, but it is still a Porsche. It was meant for driving the Million Dollar highway in Colorado or the Tail of the Dragon with the top down, and my wife is not a top down (or mountain highway) kind of person. I am certain it is cheaper to replace the car than the wife.

    Great looking vehicle.
The IMS bearing is an issue with this 911 model (99 - 2005) in particular so more info in this regard would be appreciated. Was this looked at during the last oil change? I have read that usually there is evidence of pending failure in the used oil and filter. Could you check into this please and thank you.

This is a very nice model (I know, enthusiasts complain about the scrambled egg headlights, but hey for the value they are great, especially if the IMS has been dealt with). I bought a 2001 with 220,000 kilometers on it that had recently (less than 20K) had a complete engine rebuild, including the IMS) when I was living in The Netherlands back in 2010. I picked it up at a reputable dealer drove it around Den Haag that day (showing it off:) and the very next day picked up my daughter in Rotterdam and we drove to southern Spain to attend a music festival and then back to NL. Never a problem, never a glitch, just pure fun and the A/C worked great down in Spain that summer. I'm back in The States and on the hunt again for the same variation, just as soon as I sell our house this spring.

Thanks for checking out my car. I am available to answer any questions. This will be a fun and great car for the new owner.
