Finished in Black over Graphite Grey full leather upholstery, this 2003 Porsche 996 Carrera Cabriolet pairs a 6-speed manual transmission to its naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six. It comes equipped with 18” Light Alloy Carrera wheels, stainless steel exhaust pipes, a Hi-Fi Sound System, supple leather seats, aluminum-look interior accents, and more. Having undergone extensive servicing, this example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Utah with less than 70k miles on the odometer.
This 996 is presented in Black with a matching convertible top. Options include a Porsche windstop (deflector), stainless steel exhaust pipes, and 18” Light Alloy Carrera wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires from 2022. The seller has identified curb rashes on all wheels, scuff marks on the convertible top, and several light scratches along with a small tear on the driver’s window lower rubber trim. Detailed images can be found in the gallery along with a CARFAX report that indicates damage in June 2011 and July 2022. The seller believes the front bumper was refinished.
The interior features Graphite Grey full leather upholstery including optional supple leather seats, Porsche-crested headrests, deviated color seat inserts, and the Power Seat Package. Other options include Hi-Fi Sound (Digital), black floor mats with Porsche lettering, and aluminum accents along the steering wheel. An aftermarket stereo has been fitted, and the seller notes wear on the steering wheel, power mirror trim, and power seat trim. Slight signs of wear are also noted on the seats and a small stain on the driver's side carpet. The inside top rear corners show some looseness, which has been addressed with Velcro to the support arms. Additionally, the heating function on the seats is non-functional, and the stereo intermittently malfunctions. All other accessories and electronics are reported to be working properly.
A naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 320 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The seller has documented various services and offered additional insights into the car’s condition since acquiring it in July 2023: The exhaust pipes were noted to emit white smoke. Subsequently, a comprehensive engine inspection was undertaken, involving the disassembly of the entire engine. After thorough inspection, the block and head were resurfaced to less than .001” to ensure adherence to Porsche’s specifications. A minor nick in the top of the driver’s side block of bore #2 was noted, though not to the extent that would compromise proper head gasket sealing. Additionally, a slight groove on cylinder number 6 was observed, suspected to be from a wrist pin clip incident, but was addressed with the installation of a new wrist pin clip, and overall, the cylinder bores reportedly displayed favorable condition. Furthermore, the engine underwent a comprehensive service including the replacement of all seals, gaskets, and O-rings, all torqued to the recommended specifications outlined in Porsche’s repair manual. The vehicle received a new Bosch starter, and Bosch spark plugs, and came equipped with several enhancements from the previous owner including a new LN engineering IMS bearing, new ignition coils, a new water pump, a fresh oil cooler, a recent oil change, and an air/oil separator. The braking system was overhauled with new brake pads and rotors all around. Additionally, a new interstate battery was installed in May 2023.

I can do that,The crank and pistons were removed I saw no visible damage to them or the bearings at the time however the passengers bank connecting rods were not removed from the crank shaft and where not inspected only the drivers side and the opposite goes for the pistons to connecting rods as that’s the only way of reassembling the engine once the crankcase halves are reattached and sealed together at that point getting the wrist pin clips through the little access hole in the front passengers side of the block using the special tool is of course a little tricky and it’s possible one or more of those clips didn’t go in correct and fell out causing the pins to slide in and out of the piston and connecting rod holes I can also try and get the cover to that access hole out and insert a camera into the engine to in fact see if that’s the case here but I am somewhat apprehensive of doing so during this live auction as it might no longer be my car to mess with anymore .
If you are concerned about a possible problem with the aluminum particles coming from the pistons, you could remove the oil pan to look at the cylinder bores again from the bottom. Typically if there is a problem with the pistons and cylinder bores, it is easier to see from the bottom on these engines. Did you have the crank and pistons out of this engine when you had it apart or did you just remove the heads?
@gwistrup I used an engine assembly lube on everything or oil depending on the ALLDATA manual instructions per component, and I did the oil change and drove it a little bit then found the shimmer a second time I have not started it a third as to try and preserve a possible fixable engine but if I had to guess the only brass/copper material that I remember seeing was the connecting rods journals and the valve guides, if it was something wrong with the guides I would assume I’d get some magnetic material from the valves or the seats in the shimmer but there isn’t so I suspect it’s from the connecting rod journals that the pins slide into that is causing a abnormal/excessive rocking motion in one or more pistons that’s making contact with the cylinder walls thus getting the aluminum particles as well , I feel totally embarrassed by this mistake and for listing this in an auction before putting more miles on the car and to ensure everything was solid, but it still looks great and still has the new parts on it that aren’t affected by this . If anyone wants me to take anything apart to inspect further I’m happy to do that but this auction is ended soon so I can’t do anything that takes too much time.
How did you pre-lube the engine before you started it for the first time? What type of assembly lube did you use? Non-magnetic material (copper and aluminum) in the oil typically is from bearings and possible wear from the cylinder head camshaft journals. Maybe the oil pump. It might be worth it to change the oil, put some miles on the car and check the oil filter again.

@skulig I did most of it , still runs great starts right up , just has the shimmering aluminum in the canister when I drained the oil I saw no shimmering there just in the oil canister
Who did the work on the motor?
@gwistrup Hello gwistrup, there has been approximately 10 miles or so put on the vehicle since the dismantling, and there are no metal chips in the canister just very fine aluminum and some cooper mix particles that leave a shimmer in the bottom of the canister I put a magnet in to test for bearing/magnetic material and there was nothing that stuck to it , I will upload some pictures.
How many miles have been put on the car since the engine was disassembled? Do you have any photo documentation of the cylinder damage or of the metal chips found in the oil filter canister? Did you cut the filter apart to see how much contamination was in the oil?

Hello again , some news about this engine , I have found some very fine non magnetic metal partials in the oil canister I believe to be aluminum and a copper mix for this reason if anyone is still interested I have lowered the reserve price significantly
