This 2003 Porsche 996 Carrera Coupe is finished in Guards Red over a Savanna Beige full leather interior and offers a 6-speed manual transmission paired with its 3.6-liter flat-six. This example also features the Xenon Headlamp Package, Bose High-End Sound Package, and a 3-spoke steering wheel in dark wood and leather. Benefiting from the fortification of a 997-derived M97 short block, along with extensive modifications including a Soul Performance exhaust system, a Bilstein B16 adjustable suspension, and more, this Carrera is now being offered for auction showing under 18k miles on the odometer.

This Coupe is presented in a traditional Guards Red finish. Optional features include the Xenon Headlamp Package and a rear wiper. A set of 18" Fuchs wheels have been mounted with new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The seller adds that a paint correction was carried out and XPEL paint protection film and a ceramic coating were applied in June 2022. Minor imperfections are noted on the gas lid, passenger side wheel well, and rear bumper. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is trimmed in Savanna Beige full leather upholstery and features supple leather seats, front seat lumbar support, the Power Seat Package, and the Bose High-End Sound Package. Modifications include a new amplifier, new front door speakers, and PCCM Plus including a 7” touchscreen and Apple CarPlay. The seller notes slight blemishes on the center console and one button on the dashboard, and a ceramic coating was applied.

The naturally aspirated flat-six engine has been upgraded with a new Porsche M97 short block along with a corresponding clutch at approximately 16k miles in February 2023 by the specialists at Drivers Choice Motors of Florida, at a reported cost of $39k. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Modifications were simultaneously installed, including an IPD plenum and FI throttle body, a Soul Performance exhaust with competition headers, mufflers, and 200-cell sport catalytic converters. Additionally, a Bilstein B16 adjustable suspension was installed. Service items carried out in August 2022 are said to include the installation of a Porsche short shifter and new brakes, along with replacements to the gas valve housing, shut-off purge valves, and passenger window regulator. The seller adds that the short block was purchased from Porsche and remains under its two-year manufacturer warranty, and the vehicle has been driven approximately 1,400 miles since the upgrade.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This 911 C2 is as fine an example as is available today. The Carrera looks new and drives better than new. Its in excellent condition, the new engine, suspension, Soul exhaust, Porsche short shifter, new Fuchs wheels and Michelin tires, and PCCM Plus make this 911 the best it can be. Its new owner can be confident that this 911 will provide years of pure analog driving pleasure (No driver assistance except for ABS) and look spectacular in the process!”

@GeorgeD33 the M96 and M97 both used Lokasil in the cylinder bores and I've never heard of any M96/7 being manufactured without that coating, even new crate motors. The 3.6L M96.03 originally in this car and the 3.6L M97.05 were primarily differentiated by changes to their cylinder heads (i.e. different camshaft, mechanical vacuum pump). The M97 shortblock as fitted on this car now should be the same from a performance standpoint with the only difference likely being this one having the larger, more reliable, but non-serviceable IMS bearing. There are also some small differences in fasteners, but that's only really relevant when rebuilding the engine. Something about this car is super appealing...maybe just its simplicity or the classic Fuchs wheels on Guards Red or the fact that it looks so well cared for.

    1) 3.6-liter displacement
    2) I have no knowledge of Porsche engineering and manufacturing of the M97 engine before or now, so I cannot answer your second question.

This was a rarely driven Connecticut car. To avoid bore scoring, the engine needs to be driven from startup to running temperature - avoiding short trips that do not allow the engine to burn off excess fuel from startup and provide proper cylinder lubrication and cooling. We can only surmise that in all likelihood this did not always occur in Connecticut with the 2 previous owners.

My friends at Drivers Choice that did all of the work on my car, said they have never before seen bore scoring like this on a Florida car. It was noted that a car achieves running temperature faster in Florida than Connecticut where it gets much colder in winter, so it’s more likely to occur in colder climates absent proper warmup.

Beautiful 996! I have 2 questions about the short block- forgive me if mentioned elsewhere:
    1) What is the displacement- 3.6? 3.8?
    2) Since bore scoring is a known issue with M97's, do you know if Porsche improved anything in the cylinder with your new engine, or is this engine identical to the M97's manufactured 14 years ago and still susceptible to the same issue?

  • tbkiawah15 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

    PS
I omitted how the new Porsche short shifter significantly enhances the driving experience!! It’s just about as good as it can be!

  • tbkiawah15 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

Welcome to the final day of the auction for my Guards Red 996.2. I am available to answer any questions you may have.
Please note that this 911 was very well optioned when new with $15,620 in options for a list price of $84,220 excluding delivery! With the recent improvements to the short block, air intake, exhaust and suspension, this 911 runs better, sounds better and drives better than when it was new!
With the Expel PPF covering the front and sides of the car, and Expel Ceramic applied to the exterior and interior, this 911 is as well protected!
With the new PCCM Plus it is technologically up to date w/a touch screen and Apple Car Play!
And with the PORSCHE warranty on the short block and clutch, the Classic Club Coupe wheels and new Michelin PS2 tires, the winner of this auction can be confident that this 911 requires nothing but to be driven!
Good luck to everyone with the auction!

Regarding the paint meter readings: yes, the higher readings reflect the PPF!

    Beautiful 996!
Regarding the paint meter readings, are the ones with the higher readings due to PPF applied on those panels?
Thank you and best wishes with your auction!

This car is gorgeous and perfect! Congratulations on presenting such an excellent example of a 996. I'm tired of sellers trying to pass off a half-baked car as a premium one. This car checks all of the right boxes. GLWTA!

The parts list I have is included on the invoice. New coils were installed 8/2022, and new brakes were reportedly fitted before my purchase 6/2022. No dyno on the engine as it’s not a concern of mine. The engine is essentially stock (no tuning required) but revs more freely and seems to have more power as a result of improved air intake and exhaust resistance, and it sounds awesome!
This is a new M97 short block purchased from Porsche w/a 2 year warranty. The IMS bearing is presumably their latest larger bearing.
Thanks for your questions and comments.

  • 1822 1 year, 1 monthago

Beautifully presented 996. I especially liked the Fuchs-style wheels. TBH they looked so good on the car I had to remind myself that these weren’t standard issue in the 996s. Good choice.

Can you provide some more details on the M97 engine upgrade?
    - Do you have a parts list of what all was put in? (With part numbers).
    - Have you dyno’d the motor after the upgrade was completed?
    - And of course, the one everyone always asks: which IMS bearing are you running?

Thanks, and good luck with the auction.

  • tbkiawah15 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

Welcome to the auction of my 911 Carrera. Please ask questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability. I am traveling the 30th and 31st so please be patient as I won’t be able to respond immediately, but will do the best I can.
    Additional information to note:
The short block and clutch have a 2 year warranty from Porsche from 2/2023. The rest of the engine was checked, cleaned and reassembled, so the engine is essentially stock. Air intake is enhanced by the IPD Plenum and 82mm Throttle Body, while air exit resistance is reduced by the Soul Performance Exhaust. The engine breaths much better enhancing performance and sound quality, no tuning required. The original exhaust is included.
I made this investment when during the IMS bearing repair to the original engine, a scored 6th cylinder was discovered. Unfortunately, I am a perfectionist, so I fixed it to the best of my ability/pocket book!
The forged Fuchs wheels are from the Classic Club Coupe and have PORSCHE engraved opposite the valve stem as noted in the pictures. They are hard to get! The original optional 18” Carrera wheels mounted on Continental Extreme Contact tires w/2,000 miles are available for purchase separately. They are in very good condition.
One other item to note: the leather interior is in excellent condition and does not have blemishes throughout as noted in the write up. Their are a few minor blemishes around the shifter/console, around the seat controls, and around one button on the dash.
    Thank you for your interest!
    Good luck to everyone!
