Up for auction is this 2004 Porsche 996 Carrera 4S Coupe finished in Arctic Silver Metallic.  Among the most desirable models of the 996 generation, the C4S highlights Turbo derived styling, all-wheel-drive performance, and a naturally aspirated flat-six engine.  This final-year 2004 example was factory optioned with the Bose High-End Sound Package, Light Wood Package, a black full leather interior, and a Tiptronic S automatic transmission.  A lifelong California car, this 996 remained under the care of its original owner in Santa Monica before his passing in 2020 when his son assumed ownership. The car has been recently serviced and a new engine with upgraded IMS bearing was installed at 27k miles by Porsche of Santa Barbara. Now with just over 69k miles showing on the odometer, this 996 Carrera 4S is being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

This 4S is finished in Arctic Silver Metallic and features the wide fenders and bumpers of the Turbo model as well as a unique model-specific reflector band located between the taillights. The seller notes minor cosmetic imperfections on the front and rear end, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This example rides on factory 18” Turbo-look wheels dressed in Michelin tires dated from 2019 in the front and 2016 in the rear.

Inside, this 996 features a premium black full leather interior with Light Wood trim and aluminum inlays for the shifter and handbrake lever.  Other optional features include adjustable front seat lumbar supports, the Bose High-End Sound Package, self-dimming mirrors with rain sensors, and a remote 6-disc CD changer. The sunroof drains have been refreshed and the sunroof panel was previously replaced.  Some marks are noted around the inner door handles and the seller reports some of the wood trim to have peeled away.  All gauges and accessories remain functional apart from the radio, which needs a new fuse according to the seller.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.6L flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed Tiptronic S transmission that allows for both manual and automatic gear changes.  As much as 315 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque are sent to all four wheels providing acceleration from 0-60 MPH in approximately 5 seconds with a top speed of over 170 MPH.  A new engine with an upgraded IMS bearing is said to have been installed by Porsche of Santa Barbara at 27k miles.  Routine oil changes have been performed throughout the years along with other standard services including new brakes and drive belts.

This sale will include one master key, a toolkit, jack, spare tire, and a clean title.  With its premium options and replacement engine, this Carrera 4S offers an excellent value for any enthusiast looking to get behind the wheel of a Porsche 996, do not miss out.

    Any slippage in the transmission after the engine is warm and higher rpm (4K+)? The driving video is to short and at low speed.

    @ayan991 - LOL - OMG !!!!! Your right . I have NEVER EVER heard of any 2004 porsche or 2003 for that matter or a 2002 engine failure due to IMS . Had to be a different issue.

  • ayan991 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @Bigdino this one is a 2004

  • Bigdino (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    Very rare for a 2001 double row ims to fail , tip or no tip. I think failure rate was less than 1%. I own an ‘01 and I did install ims anyways at 80k and did RMS and oil separator and at the time the original double row bearing looked fine…. Maybe this car fell into the “less than 1%”….

    @ddrnascar yes that’s correct, at 27k miles, at Porsche Santa Barbara

  • ddrnascar (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    I might be Mia-reading, but it sounds as though there was a new engine and new IMS bearing installed? Am I reading that correctly in the description?

  • ayan991 (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    correct, a lot of later 996's were plagued with the IMS issues.

  • raustin33 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    @rickster Same IMS regardless of transmission, so it theoretically should still be changed/fixed.

    I was under the impression (right or wrong) that tiptronic tranny's aren't at risk for IMS failures.
