Available for auction is this 2004 Porsche 996 Carrera 4S Coupe finished in Black with a matching black full leather interior. It came from the factory tastefully optioned with the Bose High-End Sound Package, heated front seats, the Sport Exhaust System, and a 6-speed manual transmission. Notably, the IMS bearing failed at about 15k miles and the original engine was replaced with a newer 997-generation engine under Porsche's warranty. This Carrera 4S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut showing approximately 113k miles on the odometer.

This 996 is finished in Black and sports wide fenders, Turbo-style bumpers, and a model-specific reflector band spanning between the taillights. It rides on factory 18” Turbo-look wheels dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with accenting colored Porsche crest wheel caps and aftermarket wheel spacers. The seller notes several chips and scratches in the paint, a chipped corner of the rear reflector band, and suggests a paint correction for the hood and front bumper. The seller also notes some windshield pitting and recommends replacement. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is trimmed in black full leather upholstery and comes with optional front seat heating, the Bose High-End Sound Package, and black mats with Porsche lettering. The seller reports some scratches on the inside of the passenger door and on the back of the front seats.

The original 996 engine suffered an IMS bearing failure at approximately 15k miles and was replaced with a new 997 engine under Porsche warranty. This power unit drives all four wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission while stopping power comes from fixed 4-piston brakes shared with the 996 Turbo. This 911 has been regularly maintained since new and recent services include a new starter motor, a drive belt replacement, an ignition switch replacement, and new rotors and pads on all four corners.

This sale will include a clean title.

Thank you to all who placed bids and commented! I'd also like to extend a thank you to the team at Pcar Market. They've been rockstars throughout the process and there could not have been a better place to show this C4S off. This has been a lot of fun and I can't wait to trust them with my next car sale... or purchase!

  • sagatradingco (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@nhskibm major congrats to you! I think you'll be absolutely thrilled with the car. Now to break the news to my three-year-old, who calls this the "fasty car." She's going to be bummed about going back to the land cruiser for school runs haha

@BigWaveDave908 m96 motor with 997.1 bearing. Addressed in earlier comments as well as in the photo gallery. Motor has about 100k on it

  • BigWaveDave908 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@sagatradingco Got it. Concerned that if I reg the car it will show lower miles and trigger a discrepancy.

Can you confirm it has the 997 motor? 997?

  • sagatradingco (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@BigWaveDave908 the state takes months to serve the title to they up it to the average mileage of a commuter, in order to reflect “accurate” milage of a car that is being driven daily. The listing mileage is correct, as I’ve only added about 1500 myself. I’ve already opened a case with carfax and the state to correct the mileage. It is in the process of being rectified.

  • BigWaveDave908 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

What is the current mileage? Carfax says 116k. Listing says 113.5k

    @Summerbaby always bet on black!

  • sagatradingco (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

sorry i pressed tab and it sent the comment.

what i meant to say is it does indeed have the larger 997.1 bearing. The "AT" in the engine number indicates the replacement. If there were an "X" in there, it'd indicate a repair and not a replacement. hope this helps!

  • sagatradingco (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@Rocky From everything I understand, any replacement in 2005 or beyond uses the larger 997.1 that cannot be replaced. It also has a much much lower rate of failure. This is why the IMS is not that big of a deal on the 997.1 cars. That's all to say it is indeed an M96 motor, but wit the larger 997.

  • Summerbaby 1 year, 6 monthsago

In my opinion One of the nicest colors for this car

  • Rocky (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Block looks like it says M96 to me, so same IMS-issue prone engine. Has there been an IMS retrofit installed?

  • sagatradingco (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Entering the final stretch here. I’ll be standing by tomorrow to answer your questions!

  • sagatradingco (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

You know what? I'll include the Valentine 1 with the car. I don't want the auction winner to have to cruise evil-bay.

Finally stopped raining here in CT. I’ll get the car out of the garage and roll into puddles for that serial number pic. I need a bath anyway

  • LeadfootYT (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Worth mentioning that the remanufactured M96 from Porsche (which would have been the most likely unit used in a late 996/early 997 engine replacement) are the same part, with the same part number, regardless of 996 or 997 application. Is this motor a 3.6 or a 3.8? I assume this is a 3.6 based on airbox and application, which would imply that the motor would still be subject to IMS wear over time (especially with 100k miles on the motor), but I'm also curious to see the receipts and pn/serial number on this motor.

Hey gang! Thanks for the comments.

I emailed Manhattan motorcars. They forwarded this info regarding the motor swap (screenshot added to the gallery). I’ll be able to take pics of the engine serial etc on Monday.

  • Autotrend (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

carfax does not say engine replacement. engine out so that the flywheel/flexlate can be replaced

  • drjackryan (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

I'd like to see that paperwork as well. The write up says replaced under Porsche Warranty, but the carfax shows an engine replacement by Manhattan Motors around 15K. Clarification on this would help.

An engine serial number would also help. Thanks.

do you have paperwork to authenticate the engine replacement? was the replacement motor a 997s motor or non s motor?
