Limited to only 1,953 examples in total, the 2004 Porsche Boxster S 550 Spyder Edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s iconic mid-engine race car. This limited-edition model comes finished in GT Silver Metallic over a Dark Grey natural leather interior and features special painted wheels and a more powerfully tuned engine along with several unique design elements. This example has remained under the care of its second owner since 2008 and benefits from a history of routine maintenance. Showing just over 24k miles on the odometer, this Boxster S is now being offered for auction at no reserve by its seller out of Arizona.

This limited-edition Boxster wears a GT Silver Metallic finish complemented by a black convertible top, a unique stacked-tip exhaust finisher, and body-colored 18” Carrera wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires from 2022. Some dings and scratches were noted during a recent inspection at Patrick Motorsports. Additionally, the seller states the front end is very slightly pushed in and some underside scrapes are present. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features Dark Grey natural leather upholstery including Sport Seats and a three-spoke steering wheel with perforated grips. GT Silver Metallic painted trim accents the center console, dashboard, door handles, and instrument surround. Options include cruise control, a center console shelf, the Bose High-End Sound Package, a CD shelf in the center console, and painted seatbacks. The seller notes that both the driver and passenger interior vanity mirror covers have broken off and the integrated vanity lights are no longer operable.

The 986 Boxster S is equipped with a 3.2-liter mid-mounted flat-six engine. This being a limited-edition example features special factory tuning for an additional 6 HP and a total output of 266 HP at 6200rpm. Combined with a 6-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels, this Boxster S offers a factory-claimed 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 165 MPH.  550 Spyder edition cars also received several other performance enhancements over the regular Boxster S including a factory short shifter, slightly lower and stiffer suspension, and Porsche Stability Management (PSM) as standard.

This sale will include extensive documentation, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I have owned this Special Edition James Dean car for 15 years and have mainly driven it for around-town fun. All maintenance is up to date, and it was fully inspected/brought up to date in September. The car is completely stock with new tires installed in 2022. The exterior is in good shape, with a few dings and scratches. There are two yellow sheet pictures from a recent Vehicle Inspection done by Patrick Motorsports here in Phoenix showing where the scratches are. In addition, the front is very slightly pushed in and has a scraped area underneath. It is not noticeable unless one is really looking for it. See picture taken from vehicle inspection.”

I don’t to be difficult or disrespectful but bore scoring is absolutely an issue in the 986 Boxster’s. Jake Raby of LN engineering has a ton of videos about it on line.
    Good luck with your auction.

@Tripin6 , the shop that knows this car is quite confident that I did not have to bring the car in to be looked at, and that the clicking was just from a cold start up.

  • por356c 5 months, 2 weeksago

I’m not sure what the comment means regarding having the bore scooped, but bore scoring is not an issue in 986s whatsoever. It only reared its head in the 987s. A much more significant issue for this car is having the IMSB replaced as soon as possible. Which, if this car sells for so little, replacing the IMSB should be a minor investment for the new owner, but a necessary one.

  • MurderMammoth (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Margolinn6 truly is a beautiful car. I’m so tempted, but have one already with the Cocoa top/interior…as well as an 08 S Limited Edition, 2 996 turbos and 2 997 turbos. If I buy another, I may be sleeping in one of them. Who knows, I may jump in. 🙂

Were you actually able to take the in tow shop to have the noise checked? Without a bore scope and actual physical inspection there’s no real way of knowing the cause of the noise.

  • por356c 5 months, 2 weeksago

Just a couple more comments, please: this is a very special car with a lot of important special factory options that were added to this car, functional, as well as cosmetic. I actually should’ve never sold mine. Although I love my 07 Cayman S, I miss my 550 Spyder very much. This is, without question, the very best of the original 986 era. And how are you ever going to find one of these, considering only 500 wherever imported to the US, with such low mileage?. Everyone interested should jump all over this.

  • 06CaymanS 5 months, 2 weeksago

@por356c I could not agree more with you!

  • por356c 5 months, 2 weeksago

This is a ridiculously low price at present. It at least deserves to get into the mid-20s. I owned one of these. For such a low mile example, seller deserves much more than this. Can’t believe this was ever listed at no reserve. GLWA!

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@06CaymanS @06CaymanS, thanks so much for your kind words about the car! It has been very fun to drive, and the only reason I am selling it is because my husband and I are downsizing.
It's time for someone else to enjoy it as much as I have!

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@burnrubr , Patrick Motorsports has reviewed this video and thinks that it is the Lifter Arm that is making a noise, from a cold start. This is normal wear and tear on the car, goes away after the car is warmed up, and in their opinion there is no need to adjust.
I did my own walk around this morning with my Iphone. It is currently not uploading to this site, so I will take a new video in a different format that will, hopefully, upload. Indeed, after I drove around the car and warmed up the engine, the clicking sound is not noticeable unless you are really really listening for it.

  • 06CaymanS 5 months, 2 weeksago

For those of you not familiar with this model Boxster, this is a very special car. The color combination is beautiful, especially the GT Silver Metallic, a color reserved only for the GT cars back in 2004. Because the car sits lower (and wider) than a Boxster S, it handles like it’s on rails. It is truly a fun car to drive, especially with the top down. My only advice to the new owner is to replace the original IMS with one from LN Engineering. The clutch and the RMS are usually replaced at the same time, but the shop performing the work can determine whether those items are also in need of replacement. I would think that a car with only 24k miles shouldn’t need a new clutch. Good luck to the seller as well as to the new buyer. Someone will end up with a wonderful car today!

It is currently 7 AM here in Phoenix and before anything opens. I will see if I can get it looked at by Patrick Motorsports and have an answer about the clicking noise ASAP this morning! Thank you. There was no note about the noise from Patrick Motorsports, and to me the clicking is only pronounced when it is videoed.

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

nice car and the front bumper "pushed in" is hardly noticeable, feedback on the ticking noise? any note on that from Patrick Motorsports check up? thanks

  • joebatters (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Any feedback on the clicking noise?
    Sounds pretty pronounced.

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@smashour , I have added the yellow Inspection sheets to pictures. The last 3 pages listed before the Inspection sheets are itemized work that was done in September to get the car in tip-top condition for sale.

  • CalabasasDave (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

There is a loud clicking noise on the walk around video from the left side of the car... can any Boxster owners chime in if this normal? Sticking valve? Exhaust leak? Bore Score?

  • 06CaymanS 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Jimbo409 the 2004 Boxster S Spyder Special Edition came in either cocoa brown interior and top, or black top and dark grey natural leather interior like this one. This interior looks almost black. I own #1272, which is identical to this one.

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Jimbo409 @Jimbo409, I was not even aware after all of these years that the front end is pushed in until I had it Inspected in September for this sale. It cannot be seen when looking at the car, and I had no idea that sliding over a parking curb had done this! (see my comments below). The hood opens and closes with no problem.

DoctorDriver below also commented about the convertible top cover not being as tightly closed as on the left. I was also not aware of this, and it was not noted in the Inspection in September either. Otherwise, I would have had it repaired if needed.

Margo,I forgot to ask you why ru selling the car

  • Van_Slyke (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

I’ve been shopping Boxsters and Caymans for months. This is likely the coolest one I’ve seen - the James Dean connection is a great conversation starter I’m sure

  • Jimbo409 5 months, 2 weeksago

Another question does the hood open and close with the front pushed in, also the back cover for the convertible top cover on passenger looks like it doesn’t close right.
How bad is the front end pushed in what pic number shows it

  • Jimbo409 5 months, 2 weeksago

    Thank you

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Jimbo409 , thanks for asking more about the car. This is a Commemorative-Edition Boxster S which, in 2004, celebrated the 50 years that had passed since the introduction of the 550 that James Dean was driving the day he was killed. I have uploaded more specific information about the car for you.

I do not believe that work has ever been done on the IMS Bearing or the clutch. Please see the paperwork showing work that has been done. Prior to 2022, there was only regular maintenance/servicing.

Any paperwork proving it’s a s550. It really seems to be a regular 2004 boxster s

  • Jimbo409 5 months, 2 weeksago

If this is a 2004 s550 spyder the interior and top should be cocoa brown. Is yours this color if black I have never seen a 2004 s550 this color

  • Jimbo409 5 months, 2 weeksago

Has the ims. Bearing been done, how about the clutch

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 3 weeksago

Yes, I do see that the passenger side of the top cover shows a slight gap in closing when the top is down. I was not aware of this until you pointed it out.

  • DoctorDriver (registered bidder) 5 months, 3 weeksago

Hi, in the images with the top down it looks like the passenger side of the top cover isn't closed completely. Is that from operator error when putting the top down or is the top cover misaligned?

  • Margolinn6 (seller) 5 months, 3 weeksago

Hello, I have added the service records for 2022, and also records for the work/inspection done recently in September. Thanks for asking. I have complete records before 2022 as well...routine check-ups.

Thank you. The first week I got it, I was parking and went over the front parking curb a little too fast. This caused the car to slide over the curb and scape the underside. No engine work was done or needed. It was a hard lessen for me in learning to drive the car! Visually, no one can see that the car has been damaged.

  • bobschultz 5 months, 3 weeksago

Great looking Boxster, can you elaborate on how the front end was pushed in? Any engine work involving the IMS and related parts?
