Designated as No. 32 of 1,953 examples produced in total, this rare 2004 Porsche Boxster S "50 Years of 550 Spyder Edition" celebrates one of Porsche’s most iconic historic race cars. This limited-edition model comes finished in GT Silver Metallic over a Cocoa leather interior and features special painted wheels and a more powerfully tuned engine along with several unique design elements. Originally a Texas car, this example completed a pre-purchase inspection upon the seller’s acquisition in August 2023. Fortified with an IMS bearing service, this Spyder Edition is now being offered for auction out of Georgia with approximately 112k miles on the odometer.

This limited-edition model wears a GT Silver Metallic finish complemented by a Cocoa brown convertible top, a unique stacked-tip exhaust finisher, bronze-painted brake calipers, and body-colored 18” Carrera wheels. The car rides on a set of Kenda tires from 2022. The factory hard top is said to accompany the sale along with a twin hump rear deck. The seller notes some imperfections as expected with age & mileage, including a scuff on the front bumper, minor surface scratches, and a dent in the driver’s rear quarter panel. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin features special Cocoa leather upholstery including Sport Seats and a three-spoke steering wheel with perforated grips. GT Silver Metallic painted trim accents the center console, dashboard, door handles, and instrument surround. Options include a front center console, cruise control, and the Bose High-End Sound Package. The seller notes the passenger seat was previously replaced due to seat bottom separation and the radio signal malfunctions. All other gauges, electronics, and accessories are said to be in proper working order.

The 986 Boxster S is equipped with a 3.2-liter mid-mounted flat-six engine. This being a limited-edition example features special factory tuning for an additional 6 HP and a total output of 266 HP at 6200rpm. Combined with a 6-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels, this Boxster S offers a factory-claimed 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 165 MPH. The 550 Spyder Edition cars also received several other performance enhancements over the regular Boxster S including a factory short shifter, slightly lower and stiffer suspension, and Porsche Stability Management (PSM) as standard. Based on the car’s engine number, the seller states that the IMS bearing was addressed under warranty by Porsche.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, sales literature, the factory hard top, and a twin hump rear deck.

The seller would like you to know: “This has been my favorite Porsche I’ve owned to date and was my dream Boxster S when I bought it. Although it may not be a perfect car, and it may have higher miles, I appreciated that more. To me, that meant I could go out, and enjoy it, without having to constantly worry not only about affecting the value or worry about the many things in this world that could damage it. In a world where there are so many garage queens, I was able to go out and drive it as vehicles are supposed to be driven. I know wherever this Boxster goes, it will always be able to be enjoyed. Thank you for your interest in my auction and happy bidding!”

@Singvold Congratulations. I have a 99 996 garage queen the “wifey’s.” I’m sure you will enjoy driving the Boxster!

  • Singvold (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

@sjaffer08 well, this will make it a stable of 1 P-car for me so very excited after letting my 1999 996 go a couple years ago. Good luck with the next one!

@Mplatt911 No issue shifting at all. Very light easy clutch pedal as it should be. Goes through all the gears seamlessly. You can watch the video of my short drive. That was when the vehicle was cold. I think I got it into fourth gear, no issues one-handed.

  • Mplatt911 (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

Can you advise condition of second gear. I drove ones of these for sale couple months ago and it was shot. I guess they are known for second gear synchro issues

@TheVintageCarGuy They were not originally ordered with this vehicle. I did not repaint them as it would be much harder to find a buyer for a hardtop or the humps if I ever wanted to sell them separately if they are in GT Silver.

GT Silver is the only way this car came. It has not been repainted.

  • TheVintageCarGuy 4 weeksago

@willbird Please clarify further as to why the humps and top do not match the car. Are they not original to this limited edition car or was this car repainted to GT Silver at some point.

  • willbird (seller) 4 weeksago

Sorry for any confusion. I did not realize the top and humps not matching were not disclosed in the ad.

  • willbird (seller) 4 weeksago

@sjaffer08 Can’t believe PCar market did not put that in the ad. No they do not match. They are both Arctic silver.

  • sjaffer08 (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

@Dupla they look off to me too. Especially the humps.

  • edgy4sure (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

    @Dupla def do not match...

  • Dupla (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

Is it my eyes, or the speedhumps & hardtop color don`t match the color of the car?

  • willbird (seller) 4 weeksago

@fastfelix I honestly cannot speak to the codes that were in there. I do not have the pictures in my phone or from the invoice on the report. From what I remember it was an evap code and a low voltage code. Neither of which are throwing a check engine light.

I did have the evap code pop up during my ownership but was resolved by replacing the fuel cap. I did save that part and receipt and will be included with the sale.

@willbird Will - the report talks about DTC issues - I don't think the photos with the report are attached though

Can you please explain more about what issues were flagged?

    thank you
    James

  • willbird (seller) 4 weeksago

@edgy4sure I would say 1 of 500 units for the United States is rare but everyone has their own definition. I know its not the rarest out there but definitely special!

  • edgy4sure (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

they really should scrutinize how people use the term "rare"

  • TheVintageCarGuy 4 weeksago

@Blubyeyou Only if this was a No Reserve auction. But it's not. And the Seller has already indicated that he is OK with it not selling, so my guess is reserve is set unrealistically high.

  • Blubyeyou (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

@TheVintageCarGuy Anemic bidding is a good thing:)

  • TheVintageCarGuy 4 weeksago

Who is the Einstien that coordinated the photo shoot for this listing? I just don't know what some peope are thinking. The uniqueness of this car is/are the speedhumps, yet pics of them installed had to be asked for. And the pics of them installed were all taken inside, up close in cramped quarters, no profile, which shows their true asthetic enhancement. The feature picture for this listing should have been a full or semi profile pic, outdoors with speed humps installed. It's no wonder bidding has been so anemic.

@Richard356 I wouldn’t call it a leak or even a worry. Really just vapor. No drops, no fluid. Underbody photos uploaded showing where the vapor is along with how dry the rest of the underside of the engine and transmission are.

I uploaded photos of the dents as well.

@CarNutinMiami Have wanted to go back to a 944 for a while but probably wouldn’t happen right away. 987 Cayman S would most likely be the next stepping stone. My dad bought one new when I was younger and have always had those close to my heart. Have tried to keep a Porsche in the household for a couple of years now as they are my one true love.

  • CarNutinMiami 1 monthago

  • maxmilford (registered bidder) 1 monthago

I recently purchased a 550 S after buying a 987 Spyder. Don't underestimate these Boxsters. The short shifter is a delight and unexpected. It is not a $70k car but it is definitely 70% of the fun of a 987 Spyder for a LOT less money. I need that hardtop!

@RumbleAuto Thank you for the kind words. When I bought it I knew this was the 986 to have. A numbered car, the fastest one ever produced for the 986 generation, and a great color combo makes this the best of the best for me. If I have to keep it, it won’t be the end of the world! Thanks again!

  • RumbleAuto (registered bidder) 1 monthago

I'm honestly shocked that there are no bids on this beauty as of yet, meaning so far into the auction.

This is definitely a case of the glass being half full in my eyes. This is not only the best-ever version of the 986 (technically 986.2 here) with all the revisions that Porsche was ever going to make, but is even a numbered car. Numbered cars are quite special in the realm of even special Porsches, so this little beauty has so much going for it.

The highest spec engine for 986 variations, the best styling (latest version bumpers, all-red taillights, and Litetronic headlights are all superior to early 986s), the amazing sports seats, and special finishes on most of the interior. The top has the glass rear window with defroster, GT Silver metallic paint, Cocoa full-leather interior, unique shifter and handbrake, and the 18" Carrera wheels.

In other words, there is a lot going on to make this car very special, even compared to other standard 2003/04 models of Boxster S.

  • willbird (seller) 1 monthago

@HerrDok it’s shown best in picture 6 and picture 32. It’s about the size of a quarter and is almost directly above the rear wheel. Would you like a better picture of the dent?

  • HerrDok (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Sorry to hear that you’re selling a car that you love so much in so short a time after buying it. Can you please clarify where the dent is in the quarter panel? I think I see it in the pics but wanted to be sure.

  • willbird (seller) 1 monthago

@ChuckR I’m glad you enjoyed yours but unfortunate it met a watery grave.

You’re right about the IMS only affecting a small percentage of these cars but unfortunately this one was part of that small percentage. As far as the clutch being done at the same time it’s hard for me to say without having service records.

My mechanics Boxster S almost has the same story. Replaced under warranty with a Porsche AT Code factory engine, and he also has no history of this job being done. I’ve contacted most of the Porsche dealers in Houston and Dallas looking for service history and no one had records of this specific vehicle at their location. Carfax report is in the pictures. Thanks!

  • ChuckR 1 monthago

I owned #1528 until it was destroyed (flooded) in a city water main failure. We bought it new in 04 & was one of the most reliable cars we ever owned. Always monitored engine for any tell tail signs of IMS bearing/seal failure at oil changes never an issue. Porsche Canada indicated that less than 1% of 911 / Boxster IMS failure. In any case by 2004 Porsche was using a different seal/bearing in engine assembly. If the IMS was done the clutch should have been replaced same time? Odd that there are no real service records or CarFax records in description by owner. A great car if it was actually looked after.

  • RumbleAuto (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Driven examples of Porsches are my favorite too, and I'm really glad that the seller had fun enjoying this great car. My own little 2000 Boxster S always provides a smile when you drive it, and I think the next owner of this car is going to have perma-smile as a result of their purchase too. GLWTA!

@cag4 There is a factory hardtop. Added it into the photos but I guess PCARmarket did not upload it with them. It will be included in the sale and is painted in arctic silver. I’ll try and get them added.

The only receipts I have are of the oil change I did in September of 2023, and 2 vehicle inspections, 1 PPI when I purchased and another one performed from Porsche of North Houston in April of 2023.

  • cag4 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Is there a factory hardtop as well? Don’t see it in the images. Any photos? Do you have any receipts for work done during your ownership and/or prior ownership? In particular AOS, water pump, chain guides, etc?

  • willbird (seller) 1 monthago

@nobrakes Porsche replaced the engine on Boxsters with early IMS failures from my understanding and everything I’ve read. Don’t have the paperwork nor have I been able to receive paperwork from Porsche. I’ve seen lack of paperwork for this engine replacement being done not only on mine but others as well. Attached will be a rennlist forum on this topic. In the rennlist post they go into detail on Porsche motors replaced under warranty will be an AT engine code. My engine code is M9624AT67465183.

  • nobrakes (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Since when does Porsche replace IMS bearings under warranty. I would like to see the paperwork on that.
