We are pleased to present this one of a kind 2005 Porsche 997 Carrera S Cabriolet built by legendary RUF Automobile.  Showcasing custom visual modifications and exciting performance upgrades, this uncompromising 2005 example acts as both a high performance sports car as well as a true collector-grade vehicle.  Carrying a fully customized 3.8L supercharged RUF engine, this Carrera is now being offered for auction in pristine overall condition showing approximately 37k miles on the odometer.

The timeless Carrara White finish remains in impeccable condition.  The Carfax report does show an accident in 2005, however, paint meter readings will confirm that this 997 retains its factory finish on all panels.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with recent paint meter readings.  This 997 highlights a custom RUF body kit consisting of a revised front fascia, rear bumper and side skirts which have been specially made to accommodate this narrow-body car.  The conversion was reported to have been professionally carried out by authorized RUF installers at RAC Performance in Dallas, Texas.  Other noteworthy details include a Metropol Blue cabriolet top and sought after 19” 5-spoke RUF wheels which are currently dressed in Michelin tires.

Inside, the driver is situated in a luxurious Sea Blue full leather upholstered cabin with front and rear seats in supple leather.  The seller notes the interior to be in excellent condition with all gauges, electrical components and accessories remaining fully functional.  Amenities include heated and power operated front seats, self-dimming mirrors and the Bose High End Sound Package with 6-disc remote CD changer.  Touting an original sticker price of over $102k, this 997 boasts exclusive factory options including Porsche crested headrests, Carrara White painted interior trim, illuminated doorsill guards and a leather Sport steering wheel.  An image of the full original build sheet can be found within the photo gallery.

This 997 carries a 3.8L flat-six engine which has been fully rebuilt and tuned by RUF Automobile.  A custom $25k RUF supercharger kit has also been installed lending to an impressive claimed output of approximately 420 HP.  A desirable 6-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels allowing the driver to take full control over this car’s power.  Other performance modifications include lowered sport suspension, a brand-new HD racing clutch and a top of the line $5k Cargraphic exhaust system.  Factory features include Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and the Sport Chrono Package which allows the driver to adjust performance characteristics while underway.  This 997 is shown to be up to date on all scheduled service with a fluid and filter change last carried out in fall of 2019.  Stated to be in excellent driving condition, this RUF Cabriolet is ready to put a smile on the face of its next owner.

Since the company’s founding in 1939, RUF Automobile has grown from a humble service garage to a world-renowned German automobile manufacturer.  Specializing in high performance sports cars based on modified Porsche chassis, RUF has earned a reputation for building remarkably quick cars with unparalleled attention to detail.  With its custom supercharged engine and bespoke body kit, this 2005 example is no exception.

The sale of this generously equipped 997 will include a set of two keys, original books, RUF documentation, service records and a clear title.  Do not miss out on this incredible opportunity to get behind the wheel of a one-of-a-kind supercharged 997 by RUF.

    @GT3Fun Yes.
Have James Berry @ PCAR arrange that.

  • GT3Fun (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Hi Jim, thanks for your comments. Do you want to have a conversation off line to see if we would come to an agreement? I am looking at some other cars and will probably make a decision soon. PCAR has my phone number. Please let me know. Regards

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

    Sorry..Gt3fun,
I have not kept a close watch on PCAR comments lately.
To your point yes I have some wiggle room on the advertised price.
But you must realize the raritie of even a RUF conversion. My friend that worked @ that very dealership and recalls this RUF,
tells me this is only 1 of 2 cabrolets produced for the 997's.
So, where do we go from here?
    Jim

  • GT3Fun (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Assuming that the total RUF upgrades are as indicated in the photos and 997 cabs of 2005 can be bought at mid 30k at similar mileage I would like to understand if we could come to an agreement on the price for the vehicle. Are you willing to have a final discussion before I would move on ?

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Exhaust. ....previous owner did not like the drone of the RUF system. So he decided to spend $5k and replace it.
Every thing on the suspension and brakes I examine has RUF on it.

  • nosubstitute4porsche (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Hello.. Any reason why they didn't use a RUF EXHAUST? Also do you know if RUF suspension was used? My understanding is that the RUF suspension is every bit as important as well as using ALL RUF components? Together one accentuates the other. I am curious as to why the "converter" wouldn't just do it the RUF way. I mean the seller seems to want to tout the extremely successful RUF name so why not just do it all with RUF? No disrespect just curious?

Someone could still get the bargain of a life time.
    On a 1 of a kind RUF.

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 4 yearsago

The rear bumper cover suffered a parking lot scratch. That part and the front bumper cover were replaced with new RUF parts during the RUF update.
The top is Original Equipment, it represents the finest quality and craftsmanship from PORSCHE. It is in like new condition and exhibits 1 small mar only, less than 1/4 inch.
No hole, no leakage, the material can get chafed (rubbed )when lowering the power top.
    Jim
Aside ...I love the way the new CONVERTIABLE tops fold away , with a finished look, with out that big stack hite and the fight with the cover.

Nice Car! Can you please comment on the accident some more? What damage did the car have ? What is the condition of the roof? Is it leaking at all ? Thank you

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 4 yearsago

    No.

  • NoOthy (registered bidder) 4 yearsago

There seems to be a significant amount of salt-caused oxidation on the chassis components and engine underside. Has this car been in a flood? Seller, please comment.

Highly unlikely a RUF tagged engine will have an IMS problem. If I was the seller, I'd contact RUF Germany as they keep records on all these cars. A letter on RUF letterhead stating the IMS is fine would go a long way in selling the car. I think the BIN price is going to be tough to get to without it.

Its my understanding that IMS failures were under 2% on 997.1’s and the vast majority of failures happen before the vehicle hits 20K. If his mechanic’s saw no reason for replacing than Id assume that is the case. This is a very special car, Il be watching this bid closely today.

Perhaps a quick look at the 9 pages of the carfax service history will show, I am only the current care taker of this RUF. The previous original owner purchased new from this same local dealership that has consistantly maintained this RUF. The only veration is the trip to RUF of Dallas for the Ruf converson. The dealership in New Jersey has a sterling reputation and provides unparalleled service. I have spoken to the service writers in reguard to this Ruf, they knew the owner very well, he was a open check book customer, meaning anything his baby needed 'JUST DO IT'.
    WHAT MORE CAN I SAY!
Well this! Yesterday was a lovely day here in K.C. my bride and I got the heck out of the house for a top down 126+ mile 'blow your hair around' back road cruise. With lots of thumbs ups.
    Her only question,
    'WHY ARE WE SELLING THIS?'

  • dietzmas77 4 yearsago

Jim - 2005 was a transition year for the 997.1 engine. As I understand it the early cars had the engine installed in the cars mfg from 1998 through 2005 and therefore had the smaller accessible IMS bearing where as the updated engine had the larger bearing. I had a 2005 cab with the updated bearing which could only be replace by splitting the case. Since you had the clutch replaced can you tell me which engine is in this car.

  • CurtGT3RS (registered bidder) 4 yearsago

Im laughing - My Porsche shop would have done the IMS At the time of the clutch instead of “inspecting” it. That is all.

IMS Bearing was checked out by Porsche when the clutch was replaced it did not require replacement. It was in perfect order. Research indicates that in reality less than 2% of the 997.1’s were impacted.

I’ve included a link for you that may help as well.

The IMs is a concern from 1999-2008
just check with your tech on the cost
and factor that in to your bid. We all have to assume that this car need it.
A bigger concern is those crickets in
Missouri and how much they like wiring harnesses!!

Photo #4 doesn't get you what you want to see? PCAR sped the video up...
    They have +150 more stills.
    Jim

  • JakeH (registered bidder) 4 yearsago

@CurtGT3RS - I think this is a very fair question that is still not being answered. Unless you have 'written' paperwork that states and shows IMS upgrade/removal - this bidding will factor that cost into the final price.

  • greenzgene 4 yearsago

Based on the walk around video I’d be looking closely at the left rear quarter panel. Something looked funky over the wheel well and the camera moved on very quickly. Anyone know if these are able to be registered in CA without extraordinary measures ?

I’d like to bid, but unless you’ve got a receipt for an IMS replacement, I won’t. And others should know that they’ve got the potential expense of addressing it if you can’t prove that it’s been done.

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 4 yearsago

    Well...
Since we sure can't count on the integerity of master RUF mechanic or his company.
We may have to do some CSI work of our own.
The wonderful thing about this PORSCHE is its paper trail via carfax from new with only one owner.
    RUF Update 4/2007 @ 11440 miles.
Pages of service by PORSCHE, PRINSTON N.J. no evidence of problems.
Clutch replaced 3/2010 @ 24k, engine must be removed exposing IMS. Do you belive that this Porsche would have moved 1 foot from the service bay with an even suspect IMS and +$5k for the dealer and mechanic?
Now on to me, since owning it 1 oil & filter change has been done. If you look closely the oil plug is magnetic nothing found their or in the filter.
    Jim

  • CurtGT3RS (registered bidder) 4 yearsago

Not sure if you answered the IMS bearing question? Was it replaced during the RUF upgrade?

  • PORSCHE1 (seller) 4 yearsago

YES.. that was my 1st question to a former RAC technician. Ruf was well aware of all weakness of that generation engine, that is who they are and they are dam proud of their haratiage of superior engineering.
When you super charge an engine the compression must be lowered. The engine is disassemble for new parts, also checking tollarances of internals.
That is why the 'RUF COMPRESSOR ' upgrade is $25k, they don't just stick a unit on the top of engine, like a 'HOT ROD MAGAZINE' article.
    Jim
