Sorry for the delay answering the IMS questions, we were at Daytona watching Porsche get a very well deserved 2nd and 3rd place finish in a hard fought 24 hour race.
Now to the IMS issue, we do not have any record of the IMS bearing being an issue or being replaced. I had a friendly Porsche dealer run the VIN for warranty claims and it came back with zero issues, not for IMS or any other claim.
Yes, I am the seller and it is my interest for potential buyers to dismiss the issue but please remember, I was also the buyer and the possible issue doesn’t stop me from buying a 997.
When I ask the independent shops about the IMS issue, they roll their eyes, shake their heads and tell me not to worry.
I want to state this is just my opinion which I have come to from personal experience with the 997, comments from 2 local independent shops that specialize in all things Porsche and 2 Franchise Porsche dealer service guys. They all tell me that the IMS bearing has a failure rate that is comparable to any other bearing in the 997’s.
I have had personal experience of close to 40 997’s. None had IMS issues before, during or after being in our inventory that I have knowledge of. None of our customers have ever come back to ask with any issues, none have mentioned that their shop had recommended having the IMS upgraded or changed.
Obviously, Porsche built tens of thousands and 40 is a very small percentage but I would have thought I would have had a least one with some kind of history but no, never have.
I am sure the stories I hear are true but I always wonder if there were other extenuating circumstance that went along with the catastrophic failure.
As I said, this is only my opinion and this PCar auction isn’t a place for this debate, I can only share what I know about this car so please feel free to ask any other questions, I will try and answer right away.
Has the ims bearing been replaced?
IMS status plz
