Marking the inaugural year of the 987 model, this 2005 Porsche Boxster is finished in Midnight Blue Metallic over a Sand Beige interior and features a 5-speed manual transmission, optional heated seats, a Sport steering wheel, automatic climate control, and a Bose sound system. It was acquired by the seller from its second owner in August 2014 and is now being offered for auction with approximately 29k miles on the odometer.

This 987 is finished in Midnight Blue Metallic with a Metropol Blue convertible top. Equipment includes black brake calipers with white Porsche lettering, silver side air intakes, a center-mounted tailpipe, dual roll hoops, a removable cabin wind deflector, and a speed-activated rear spoiler. The car rides on 17” Boxster S wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps and Michelin Pilot Sport run-flat tires. The seller notes the tires were mounted in 2014 within the last 7k miles, a new windshield was recently installed, and the car’s exterior remains in very good overall condition while showing some minor stone chips on the front end. Clear paint protection film is also applied on the hood and forward front fenders. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this Boxster features a Sand Beige standard leather interior with matching carpet floor mats, optional heated seats, a three-spoke Sport steering wheel, automatic climate control, and a 7-speaker Bose sound system. Other features include power windows and mirrors, cruise control, a central locking system, “Boxster” logo doorsills, and a Porsche CDR24 stereo. All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional.

This Boxster is equipped with a mid-mounted 2.7-liter flat-six engine that delivers up to 240 HP and 199 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. All routine service is said to have been kept up to date per the manufacturer’s recommended intervals.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, service records, a car cover, a battery charger, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “I have owned this car for just short of 11 years without encountering a single problem. The car has always been stored in a climate-controlled garage and properly serviced by top-notch Porsche-certified mechanics. No history of accidents or of mechanical issues. Although the official records show me as the third owner, the first owner was really the automobile agency. The first owner returned the car to the agency with what I believe was under 1k miles and wanted the engine replaced by Porsche due to the ticking noise between 2,300-3,000 RPM and Porsche refused. The ultimate resolution was that the agency took the car back and sold it to buyer #2, and then I bought it from the second owner with 22k miles on it. The "ticking: noise is actually a harmonic and has nothing to do with engine performance, safety, or longevity, and is common to all Pre-April 2005 Base models. The ticking cannot be heard with the top down, but with the top in place and the cabin's air-tight construction, there is a slight echoing effect. Since the engine is right behind the driver's head. One gets used to it and really forgets about it. The problem of the "ticking" at certain RPM was finally solved by Porsche in subsequent models by replacing the shaft supports from Cast Iron to Steel. I don't believe the problem affected the "S" models. This is without a doubt the finest handling automobile that I have ever driven. it beats many of the higher-end Porsches from the standpoint of handling and comfort, it also has one of the most forgiving clutches of any car on the road. Aesthetically, the car looks brand new and receives positive comments from everyone who comes in contact with it. The only major change to the car is a new windshield just installed because of a very distracting stone chip on the existing one.”

@meganobu Ims bearing not replaced. This is a new model of the 6cyl flat engine with an extremely low record of iMS failures. I have been told that the failure rate is below 1%.

    Sorry for last min. question.
    Has IMS Bearing been replaced?
Any records of this by Porsche Dealer or Authorized Service Center?

@stevwang I don’t think that is going to help you.
The best way to describe it is very much like that of a gasoline engine running with a tappet out of adjustment. I would estimate the noise level with the top in place as somewhere in the neighborhood of 95 mps. With the top up or with the windows open you will never hear it. It dosen’t really get audible unless you really rev up at low speed.
I would be happy to send a copy of the Porsche Bulletin to you but my copy is at home in Santa Fe and I’m in Jacksonville FL until next Saturday..
I will, however, send you my mechanic’s telephone number who I believe does have a copy and is very familiar with this issue. Once you hit 3 000 rpm (50 mph in 4th or 65 in 5th , the ticking goes away,.

    Will never hear it

can you please take a video of the ticking sound?

is it as loud as this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi6CTE2tWUc

@DoctorMetch Can you provide a link (or the number) for this Tech Bulletin?

  • DoctorMetch (seller) 5 months, 4 weeksago

@DoctorMetch This, the selling agencies were authorized to re-purchase the cars under certain conditions when the original owners demanded it.

  • DoctorMetch (seller) 5 months, 4 weeksago

@Tripin6 That was the Porsche dealership where the car was originally purchased. My understanding was that Porsche U.S. originally offered to replace the engines for original purchasers; they then withdrew the offers and substituted an offer to just replace the offending supports by rebuilding the engines. They then realized that the issue wasn’t as big a problem as originally thought and withdrew support altogether.
Apparently, Porschh had previously been reeling from widespread criticism for the bearing failures in the previous flat six engines and were hoping not to get caught-up in another embarrassment with the introduction of the new engine (the two issues were not related).

Hello, You say in your description that the car was initially owned by an agency. Can you elaborate? What do you mean by agency?
    Thanks!

@justdiggin The ticking noise occurs only between 2300 & 3000 RPM and is very low. I have reviewed this with both Porsche tech staff, my own mechanic, and a Porsche tech bulletin and have rectified info that this was the result of harmonic sounds from the shaft supports, are considered normal, do not affect performance, are not a safety issue, nor do they affect longevity,. The are in no way connected to the barring issues of earlier model engines! Porsche resolved the problem mid production run by substituting pure iron supports for the cast iron ones. The noise is very low level and courts only between 2300 & 3000 rpm.

oops, i apologize, i mistakenly thought your car was an "S" model...
    but its still a BEAUTY!

  • justdiggin (registered bidder) 6 monthsago

    that's a beautiful car!
i've had 2 early 986 Boxster S's (silver, black) and i concur that these cars are magnificently performing sports roadsters.
imho, the S is superior to the entry level Boxster by leaps and bounds as well as speed, performance and sounds!
i wasn't aware of the problematic 'ticking' noise which you have mentioned, but will research it more thoroughly over the weekend.
    i'll watch this auction closely.
    best wishes for your sale!
