Now available for auction is this 2006 Porsche 987 Cayman S.  Transformed by the specialists at Rennsport-One in 2014 with no-expense-spared on maximizing safety and performance, this 987 features a 3.6L flat-six engine with the factory X51 Power Kit along with a sequential shifter mechanism, new MCS 2-way adjustable coilovers, GT3 lower control arms, additional oil coolers, a lightweight clutch and flywheel, Bosch Motorsports M4 ABS system, BBS wheels, a lightweight racing interior and much more.  With limited track time since the completion of the build, this race-ready Cayman S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Georgia.

This Cayman S sports a removable matte black vinyl wrap and ghosted Martini racing livery along with a GT3-style front fascia, lightweight Lexan windshield, and an adjustable Crawford carbon fiber rear wing.  The car rides on a set of 18” BBS E88 3-piece wheels dressed in Pirelli racing slicks. The 3M vinyl wrap was applied in February of 2021 and the original color of the car is Arctic Silver Metallic.

Inside, the cabin has been largely stripped out and fitted with racing safety equipment including a 10-point chassis-welded Chromoly roll cage, a Recaro Hans driver’s seat, a Sparco 6-point harness, and a fire suppression system.  The driver is supplied with a quick-release OMP steering wheel, carbon fiber control panel, a cool suit system, and MoTeC CDL3 Club digital dash display and data logger.

During its racing conversion in 2014, this Cayman S was fitted with a 3.6L flat-six engine by Porsche Motorsports North America including the factory X51 Power Kit, a GT3 throttle body, a performance ECU tune, and packable exhaust.  The original 6-speed manual gearbox was retained and paired with a Cartonic Motorsports sequential shifter mechanism, performance shift linkage, an Aasco Motorsport lightweight flywheel, a new Sachs race clutch, and an Auto-Blip system.  The suspension has been upgraded with MCS 2-way adjustable coilovers, 900/750 spring sets, GT3 lower control arms, GT3 inner joints, an RSR subframe, and reinforcement tie-ins for increased rigidity.  Other upgrades include additional oil coolers for the transmission and steering fluid as well as a power steering underdrive pulley and Bosch Motorsports M4 ABS system.  The car has been routinely serviced by ACI Motorsports.

This 987 will be accompanied by a bill of sale. For any enthusiast looking to get out on the track, this highly competitive Cayman S is ready to be enjoyed for HPDE sessions, PCA events, NASA, IRL, and more.

@cerb1958 Hello and Happy Thanksgiving to you! I don't have an explanation for the tire stem marking not to be there. I will ask the guys at ACI Motorsports who mounted and balanced those tires for us. I suspect it was simply an oversight.
I do see the schmutz that appears to have run down the back left window and down the rear hatch. I can assure you it's not putty. I wonder if something was dripping on the car that was not completely cleaned off when the car was detailed for these pictures. I will ask the guys who detailed the car to go look at that schmutz and have it removed. Additionally, I'll ask Driving Club at Road Atlanta to see if there is something dripping from the ceiling on my cars. Thanks for pointing that out - we will have it cleaned off before the end of the auction Friday.
    Good luck bidding!

  • cerb1958 (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

great looking, great photos! GLWTA. tow minor questions.
there is a green arrow on each tire aligned with the valve stem, except the front left which is not aligned (image 3) . explanation??
the area running from the spoiler to the rear window on the left side (images 8,9,32,33) looks like it has putty or similar. explanation??
again, sweet looking car, and GLWTA

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@RaceCarsForRent @1Cerberus4u - I do see in picture 42 that it appears we've lost a screw / bolt or two that fastens the front bumper. Angel from ACI will go and sort that out on Friday morning. I've also asked him to make sure all the other screws / bolts that fasten the front bumper are tight and the lines are flush. Thank you for pointing that out to us. Consider it fixed!
    Happy bidding!

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@1Cerberus4u Hmmm - I hadn't noticed. I will have the guys at ACI take a look. Perhaps the front just needs a little tightening / re-alignment.
Please be picky - believe me, we are. We pride ourselves in maintaining our fleet to the very top of the range.
    Happy Bidding!

  • 1Cerberus4u (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

It appears as if the front (more so than the rear) and rear bumper covers either seem to not fit or are in need of adjustment. Is this because of the GT3 headlights and bumper covers not lining up with the Cayman fenders or was the body tweeked, or was it just a bad fit, or am I just being too picky?

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@fredf543 The previous owner swapped many components for GT3 components. The front fender and headlights are some of those components that were swapped out. There is a complete spec / build sheet attached within the photos for your review. Have a look at all the upgrades that this car received during the initial build and the subsequent maintenance (upgrades we made this past year of our ownership). Please let me know if there are any other questions you have. I can always put you in-touch with the guys at ACI Motorsports who have maintained this car for me since we've owned it. Thanks - happy bidding!

  • fredf543 (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

What happened to the Cayman front end and why does it have 911 headlights?

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@Tenkom Great questions. Please see answers below. We're also happy to coordinate a call with our mechanics at ACI Motorsports Road Atlanta if you'd like additional details.
The stock exhaust has been replaced with a Packable race exhaust which offers greater performance and sounds great! I'm not sure of the db levels but my guess would be high 90s - low 100s. It's not crazy loud like a couple of our other cars are.
This car has the original fuel tank.
The Recaro seat, Schroth belts and fire system are all current.
We put 93 octane in the car - no need for race fuel.

    Good luck bidding!

  • Tenkom (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

    Hello, a few questions:

    - Do you know what was done to exhaust? Racing exhaust? CAT removed, muffler? Noise level?
    - Did this have a fuel cell installed or oem tank still exist?
    - Belts, Seat, fire system still current or expired?
    - engine run on 91 premium or need race fuel?
    Thanks

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@leadfootstyle My understanding from the previous buyer is that he used the car for HPDE only and primarily ran it at Sebring. Zero wheel to wheel racing. Previous owner lives about 2 hours from Sebring so he only took it there. No idea on usage / mileage. All I can tell you is when I drove the car, it ran well and it pulls hard. We've had zero issues with the car since we've owned it.

I'm happy to coordinate a call with the guys at ACI Motorsports who have maintained the car for me. I'm also happy to take a call, anytime you'd like.

  • leadfootstyle (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@RaceCarsForRent Thank you for some answers.
so.... no info from the previous buyer on the 2014-2021 usage? info you would have when you purchased originally and asked them questions? miles on engine when installed and hours on the engine prior to your ownership? used for wheel to wheel ..number of weekeneds... hpde days etc.

understand registration... but you do not have the title? never received when you bought it?

  • kajzer 2 years, 5 monthsago

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@leadfootstyle Good Morning Leadfoot! Thank you for your bid!
The car is not street legal and you would not want to pay the DMV any registration fees - hence, race cars don't typically have titles. The car comes with a Bill of Sale, typical of all race cars. All my other race cars are sold this way.
RS1 removed everything that wasn't absolutely necessary for the track. You want your HP to weight ratio to be as high as possible so all non-essential components get removed: air, heat, side windows, etc. The rear window in the original window as far as I know.
The front hood is the original metal, not fiberglass.
RaceCarsForRent purchased the car in January of 2021 and it was used very lightly during our ownership. Our records show it was used for 3 HPDE track days the entirety of the 2021 season.
She's a cherry - particularly after the upgrades we installed on the car in 2021. You're bidding on a very solid car that should put a smile on your face for a long time!

    Good luck bidding!

  • leadfootstyle (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

I understand the car is not street legal. But do you have a title ? Or who holds that?

Front windshield is lexan. What about other glass. Back hatch? No side windows?
I assume air conditioning is removed. Please confirm. How about heat. ?

Is the front hood metal or fiberglass?

It seems like you purchased after the 2014 build? How many miles on engine when it went in? Is the current odometer working or any tier for hours on the engine ?
What do you know as fas as hours raced before buying and hours / events driven under your ownership?

    Thanks!

@razyus77 I believe the car weight 2811 lbs.

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@drejw2 Here is the answer I just received from the lead mechanic at ACI:
    • 2006–2008 3.6 L (3,596 cc) 325 PS (239 kW; 321 bhp) 370 N?m (270 lbf?ft) water-cooled DOHC 24-valve boxer flat-six (VarioCam Plus) (Carrera/Targa 4)
I would need to confirm by getting block code and verifying VarioCam vs. VarioCamPlus
    X51 should add around 25-35HP I believe.

    Hope that info helps.

  • razyus77 (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

    @RaceCarsForRent thank you much.
Do you by any chance have the weight of the car ?

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@razyus77 We have a freshly refinished set of BBS 18" on the car. We typically run Pirelli slicks on the car in the following sizes:
    Fronts: 245 / 645 / 18
    Rears: 265 / 645 / 18

As you can see from the pictures, the wheels are in perfect condition without a scratch or a scuff.

  • razyus77 (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

What are the tires' size as it stands right now ?

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@drejw2 Let me check with the guys at ACI Motorsports on this question. We have had zero issues with the motor during our ownership. It's run strong and it pulls hard in all the key corners at Road Atlanta. Hang tight - I'll try to get you an answer.

  • drejw2 (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

3.6 with x51. Is that a 996 engine? Because the the 997 x51 is 3.8; would the IMS be an issue? What is the expected HP?

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@dvdt under our ownership the car did not race any PCA races or NASA races. We do not have a log book for the car. The car has only been used as an HODE toy while we’ve owned it.

  • dvdt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

The ad mentions PCA and NASA - has it passed inspections or been built to those standards for club racing?

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

    @Craignyc - No track incidents.

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@Craignyc Yes - you still engage the clutch for all shifting. IMO the shifting is faster with this sequential shifter. If you're shifting gears 15-20 times per lap, you will have faster lap times with a sequential shifter vs. a standard shifter. That said - the Cartronic sequential maintains the original Porsche H pattern gear box. So you can swap it back to a "standard" shifter if you want to. We love the ease of the sequential and the speed of the shifts it delivers.

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@uscarrera No log books with the car. It was used only as an HPDE car.

  • Craignyc (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Also has this car been involved in any on track incidents that wouldn’t show up on a car fax?

  • Craignyc (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Do you use the clutch with this system?

  • uscarrera (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Any log books with the car?
    Thanks

  • RaceCarsForRent (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Happy to answer any questions you may have about our Ghosted Martini Cayman S. You can also speak with the manager of ACI Motorsports Road Atlanta who has worked on the car in 2021. The car is available to view in-person at Driving Club at Road Atlanta by appointment.
Good luck bidding! It's a great car and we hate to see it go - but go it must.
