Up for auction is this 2006 Porsche Cayman S. With its mid-mounted engine and rigid lightweight chassis, the Cayman is arguably one of the best handling vehicles in Porsche’s lineup. This example was sold new in Atlanta Georgia where it remained until being purchased by the current seller who resides in New York. This past July, the car experienced an engine failure that can be viewed in the video below. In order to diagnose the issue the engine had to be disassembled. It is now being offered as an excellent project to either rebuild or replace the motor.
Finished in Guards Red, this Cayman S shows only typical road going wear, including chips to the front end and a few hairline scratches throughout. The seller provided photos that shows the true condition of the Caymans exterior. Currently installed are a pair of 19" Avant Gaurde Ruger Mesh wheels that wear new Nitto tires. If desired, the winning bidder can swap the upgraded wheels for the stock 19” “Lobster Claw” wheels
Inside, you will find a black partial leather interior that is said to be in great condition given the vehicle's age and mileage. Typical to models of this year, a few center console buttons are fading and there is some wear on front driver's seat bolster. Additionally, two minuscule screw holes were placed in the carpet flooring near the fuse box for a camera mount module. Two noteworthy factory options on this Cayman S are the desirable hard back sport seats and Sport Chrono Package. All electronics are stated to be in excellent working order.
The Cayman S comes standard with a 3.4L flat-six engine which produces 295 HP. This example experienced an engine failure in July of this year due to a crankshaft bearing failure. The car was then brought to a well-known Porsche shop Lynmor Motorsports who completely disassembled the entire engine. Upon inspection, qualified technicians reported that cylinders need to be re-sleeved. All disassembled parts will be included with the sale. The seller made note that from the time of his purchase up until the failure of the engine, this Cayman S was in excellent operating condition and would not be parting with it had this not occurred.
The sale will include all books, one key, service records, and a Carfax report.

@2mAn If you want both sets of rims we can work that out later. The lobster claw wheels DO NOT have tires mounted on them.

I tried to call Lynmor today and got the machine. Hopefully they can call me back to help me determine their cost to fix
Jeez wonder what the part out value could be for someone in the industry of doing that.

@MStew The KBB figure you mentioned would be for a vehicle with a 113k mile engine. depending on what the buyer decided to drop in there the value could exceed that with a fully rebuilt, brand new engine.
While this car IS beautiful, anyone interested in bidding in the future or has currently bid should DEFINITELY call Lyman as the owner suggested or their preferred Porsche specialist and ask about the condition of the engine with rough estimate and subtract that from the blue book value of this car (12-15k) with 113k miles fully assembled with a good engine. I know it has affected my bid as I had no idea the price of Porsche parts. Best of luck OP!

@hpfiend during my ownership I never had an issue with the car starting. I did coils and plugs because of a misfire. Both tie rods were replaced when I first purchased the vehicle
@hpfiend the engine removal/disassembly has been done by a very well known and respected Porsche specialist shop.
Also- how long have those engine parts been stored without oil to prevent corrosion? Were the main caps labeled for positioning? Any pics of heads/block/intake mating surfaces?
Do you have any information about the damage that was reported on the carfax?
Did the ignition coil fix the hard starting issue that seems to have been consistent with this car for a while?
There seems to have been a lot of maintenance history on several systems of the car- is this typical of these cars?
Were the tie rods replaced on both sides or just the one?

@authenticrebuilds Correct. The engine is currently disassembled. The sale includes the engine AS IS and the car. Nothing seized. Engine spun a bearing. I will try to get pictures of the cylinder bores.
I take it the engine in pieces is still available to the winning bidder? As well as the transmission? was it crank to block that siezed or crank to rod, and any pics of it? Any pics of the cylinder bores?
