The car also came factory optioned with heated seats, automatic climate control, the Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package, 19” Sport Design wheels, and the Bose Surround Sound System. This Cayman S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Virginia while showing approximately 52k miles on the odometer.

This 987 is finished in the rarely seen color of Dark Olive Metallic and features red-painted brake calipers, front fog lights, side air intakes, a speed-activated rear spoiler, dual center-mounted exhaust tips, the Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package, and optional 19” Sport Design wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps. The car rides on Michelin Pilot Sport tires and the seller describes the exterior to be in excellent overall condition. The seller adds that this is the only 987 finished in this color that is currently available for sale in the United States. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this Cayman S features a Sand Beige standard leather interior with optional heated seats, automatic climate control, and the Bose Surround Sound System. Acceleration from 0-60 MPH takes place in approximately 5 seconds and stopping power comes from fixed 4-piston brakes paired with ventilated and cross-drilled discs at each corner. Service history provided on the CARFAX report includes the replacement of the clutch, flywheel, and drive belts in 2013 at 34,801 miles as well as oxygen sensors replaced in 2015 and 2016.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, an air pump, a toolkit, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction.  no pictures would ever do this color justice. Truly a brilliant example of Porsche Showmanship. I had searched for 5 years to add this color to our collection. Now it’s your turn! All Maintenance is up to date and shows like a museum piece.”

I have bought and sold two of these 987.1 cars over the last few years (bought one of them here) and watched hundreds of listings here, BaT and others. I have not once seen an IMS skeptic ever actually pull the trigger and buy one. They really don't know what they're missing.

@997_GT3_4.0 Thank you so much! I couldn't agree more. Wish everyone could see this car in person. No pictures would do this color justice.

  • 997_GT3_4.0 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Tired of all of these 987 auction threads being dominated by IMS comments. 41% of marriages fail, yet you all get married and end up losing half. But somehow a 1% failure rate is so daunting. Maintain the car, drive it, and enjoy it. It’s simple. If anything happens to the engine, then you have an opportunity to build a 3.8L dark olive croc!

Just sold my 987.1 after 13,000 glorious miles. Wish I had the garage space for this one, it’s incredible. GLWTA

@ABD20152 - I think we both understand one another, and there is no need to debate any further on this issue. I said in my opening comment that your car looks "drop dead gorgeous", and I still feel that way. You've likely got a winner here, and that is why I placed my recent bid, knowing that it is well short of a reasonable and fair Reserve. I'm assuming this car will easily hit $35K, or higher, by the end of the auction. It's so nice to see a change from the more common silver, black, and white cars. I do agree that the odds of a happy driving future are very high for the next owner of this car, assuming he/she gives it proper care and attention. GLWTA!

  • Amirzatosi (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Wow. Never seen one this color in the wild, only on pages and forums. Looking forward to seeing how this one ends. Absolutely gorgeous car. glws

  • ABD20152 (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

    @wadds1971 Thanks for your engagement!
An IMS failure on these M97 Engines is lower than 1 percent. It is also a non-serviceable bearing as I'm sure you've encountered on your research. All you can really due is hope to potentially upgrade should you ever do an engine rebuilt. I can say with some confidence that is not the case for this engine.
How would you like me to tell you the if the last 4 owners had "proper warm-up driving procedure"? I am a dealer. I can tell you about the car in it's current condition, which is in phenomenal shape (usually a correlation to how it has been maintained, wouldn't you agree?)
I encourage asking for further information from any seller. As you can see; I am answer all questions and requests in a timely manner. Just respectfully ask that the bidders to also do their own research, and come to conclusions based on the information provided. Thanks again!

@ABD20152 - I have been chasing various Cayman S offerings over the past few years, mostly on Bring-a-Trailer, but also when they have appeared on PCarMarket as well. I am very familiar with both the IMS bearing and bore-scoring issues, and my concern for them has caused me to avoid bidding on some of these cars, especially when service histories are sparse, or non-existent. It is a well-established belief that regular oil/filter changes, as well as proper warm-up driving procedure, will go a long ways toward avoiding both of these catastrophic events. FYI, I recall seeing several Cayman S cars up for auction that had already suffered total engine failure as a result of these two issues, so it is not an insignificant concern for the next owner of one of these exceptional cars. Most buyers seem content to just "roll the dice" and take their chances on the odds (estimated to be around 1% on these cars, I believe), but I prefer to limit my interest to those cars that have obviously received proper maintenance over time. It is not unreasonable at all to ask for further documentation, or assurances, from a Seller. In fact, to do otherwise seems a bit foolish to me.

  • ABD20152 (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Bruno911 It's my pleasure. I took the liberty of uploading all the paint meter readings as requested. Car is in spectacular shape. I understand that normal "wear" varies but the question was a bit vague. What specifically would you like me to get a close up on? I will gladly oblige with a handful of pictures, within reason.
I do have many Porsches in my inventory but unfortunately, I don't have the ability to just summon a DME, it can not be done with just a basic scanner. But I have scheduled it with my local shop and hope to have it before the end of the auction.

  • ntucci (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@ABD20152 Appreciate the offer! I sent you a DM the other day, please let me know if you received. You can disregard the PPI request as I have seen you already respond to others. Thanks

  • Bruno911 6 months, 2 weeksago

@ABD20152 Thank you for your response. I looked at the pics but could not see anything which is why I asked for more info. Everyone's opinion on what is "normal" for a 17 year old car will differ. I've seen two year old cars that look like crap and I've seen 25 year old cars that looked like they rolled off the showroom floor. Clearly this car appears to be closer to the latter, but always good to know the details when buying sight unseen.
On the DME, just to be clear, you are saying you will not post a report during the auction? I see you guys have a lot of Porsches on your lot so I'm sure you have basic scanner for Porsches. You can pull a DME and post a pic of the screen in about 2 minutes.

  • ABD20152 (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Bruno911 Thank you for your comment.

    1) Can you post paint meter readings?
    Will post shortly.

    2) Does the car have any PPF on it? Are there any stone chips on the front clip, or scratches or dents on any other panels ?
Car does not have PPF. I'm sure there are a couple rocks chips as would be on any car of this age and mileage. Please refer to plethora of pictures for examples. No dents or scratches.

3)What is the name and location of your dealership?
Our Dealership is Auto By Design in Chantilly, VA.

    4) The description lists "no significant signs of wear" on the interior. Where are the minor signs?
Basic wear from 50K miles and 17 years. Please refer to pictures provided.

    5) Can you post a DME report?
One can be provided with a PPI should the vehicle not reach reserve. Please feel free to reach out post auction if vehicle is still available to set up.

    6) According to the Carfax, the compression needed to be checked in a prior service. Any chance of getting the service records from that dealer to see why and to see the test results?
Here is their number (412)-741-64OO, feel free to reach out. I don't imagine they would have any additional information of a basic compression test performed 10+ years ago though.

  • ABD20152 (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@wadds1971 I understand that if you have not done research or have any experience with IMS or bore scoring that it may seem like a hovering issue. An IMS issue in this generation motor is an extremely rare occurrence and I encourage you to do research on that. Also, how can I possibly track down the oil change intervals of the four previous owners over the last 17 years? That is an unreasonable request.

If you would like the vehicle to go through a PPI, you are more than welcome to reach out and schedule one with a local shop if the vehicle does not meet it's reserve in the next 3 days. That should give you the peace of mind you are chasing if the vehicle is still available.

  • Bruno911 6 months, 2 weeksago

Very nice car. I have a few questions:

With continuing concerns among potential buyers re: possible IMS bearing and bore-scoring issues, can the Seller, @ABD20152, give any further assurances that this car has received at least proper oil/filter changes while under the care of its previous four owners? The CarFax report gives only sparse evidence of this. This car looks drop dead gorgeous from a visual standpoint, but all that would pale should an engine failure occur. Unlikely, yes, but still a concern. A thorough evaluation by an experienced Porsche tech would have helped a great deal. Any chance there is some additional documentation available over the final three days?

@ntucci Thank you for your comment!
    1. We are an automotive dealer with a passion for collectable Porsches.
    2. Based on the Carfax, the car shows consistent service records up until 48k miles. Oil change performed when we received the vehicle as well. Clean as a whistle.
    3. Tires are 9 years with 8/32 all around. Almost at end of Michelin recommended replacement age. Would recommend replacement fairly soon.
    4. We absolutely can help the shipping process. Feel free to direct message if you would like to get more details.
    Thanks Again!

  • ntucci (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

One other question, would you be willing to help with shipping over to California?

    Thanks!

  • ntucci (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Gorgeous car. Apologies if any of these have been addressed.
    1. What is your reason for selling?
    2. Any indication on how frequent oil changes were performed and are there service records that could be provided?
    3. What are the dates on the tires?

    Thank you for your time!

  • ABD20152 (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@urfealex Thanks for your comment! No signs of the car being tracked on the service history or on the vehicle itself. Most likely a preemptive maintenance service from the owner.

  • urfealex (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Nice example. Any idea why clutch ad flywheel were changed at 34k? Is there a history of car being tracked? TIA

@Walkert Thank you for your comment. This car has not been scoped.

  • ABD20152 (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Jono2112 Thank you for your comment! This vehicle is equipt with the the newer larger IMSB from factory. These have proven much less troublesome than those produced with the earlier versions. Good to go!

  • Walkert (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Has it been scoped for bore scoring?

  • Jono2112 6 months, 2 weeksago

beautiful color. What is the status of the IMS bearing?
