Up for auction is this RUF-modified 2007 Porsche 987 Boxster S finished in Atlas Grey Metallic over a black interior.  A lifelong California car, this 6-speed Boxster S was sold new from Stevens Creek Porsche before the original owner brought the car to the RUF Auto Centre in Texas for conversion to 3800S specifications at just over 3k miles.  At a cost of over $43k, this conversion included the installation of RUF interior accessories, upgraded stainless-steel headers and exhaust system, and a 3.8L engine with the Exclusive X51 Powerkit sourced from a 997 Carrera S.  Boasting a claimed output of over 380 HP while remaining largely original in its appearance, this RUF Boxster S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with just over 46k miles showing on the odometer.

This 987 comes finished in the desirable and understated shade of Atlas Grey Metallic and features a modified bumper and rear spoiler as well as a RUF badging on the rear decklid.  The exterior of the car is described to have been kept in excellent condition apart from some scrapes on the underside of the lower front bumper.  The front bumper cover has been previously refinished, and the original clear paint protection film is said to have been removed in March of 2020 before a paint correction was carried out along with the installation of a new paint protection film. Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This Boxster S rides on replica RUF wheels measuring 19”x8.5” front and 19”x11” rear.  These wheels come dressed in a set of new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

Inside, the black standard leather interior has received several special details including a RUF-logo shift knob, pedal set, floor mats, and door sills.  The previous owner has also invested over $5,500 in a Pioneer 8200 NEX In-Dash GPS AV receiver (original Porsche head unit included), Metra antenna adapter, a backup camera, Bluetooth/USB connection, and an advanced front/rear Passport 9500ci integrated radar/laser system.  Factory features include heated front seats, the Bose High-End Sound package, a 6-disc remote CD changer, self-dimming mirrors with an integrated rain sensor, the Power Seat Package, and Xenon Headlamp Package.  The seller adds that the typically worn climate control buttons have been newly replaced.

At the RUF Auto Centre in Dallas, Texas, this Boxster S was upgraded to 3800S specifications and fitted with a 997 Carrera S 3.8L flat-six engine featuring Porsche’s Exclusive X51 Powerkit.  New wiring and plumbing were created to accommodate the engine swap and custom-made motor mounts were installed along with a custom mass airflow sensor housing, and an upgraded ceramic-coated Cargraphic exhaust system.  This engine is said to generate up to 381 HP, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.  A certification from RUF is provided for reference in the photo gallery along with the original invoice totaling over $43k.  A new battery has been recently installed and the car has been kept up to date on routine oil and filter services. The selling dealer states that the car cannot pass a California Emissions test due to modifications, therefore it cannot be sold to a California buyer.

This sale will include official RUF documentation, a set of two keys, owner's manuals, service records, the original window sticker, original Porsche head unit, and a clean title.  Offering mid-engine performance coupled with the power of a 3.8L X51 engine, this RUF-upgraded 6-speed Boxster S is sure to satisfy any discerning driver.  Do not miss out on this incredible value.

@Bham911 If you did it was not a legitimate site. Scammers use legitimate dealers ads to get peoples credit card numbers for "Vehicle Deposits". I have seen them list it from my previous listing in 2020 but not this one.

@ProducerJohn Agreed, it is a blast. I drove this back from LA in June and can say it is one of the most fun cars I have driven. Easy around town, comfortable on the long hauls and as much fun as you want to have at any time you choose.

@ClassicCarsLtd thanks , that would explain the mileage reporting since it had 26-27 k miles in 2015. Do you know why Ruf needed to reprogram the ecu?

@snowtx1 Hey snowtx1, top operation video added.

  • ClassicCarsLtd (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Mos289 The DME in photo #240 was done in March of 2021 (527 operating hours). I'm guessing it was done with different software and reads the mileage from a different source than the DME report in photo #239 (550 operating hours). It appears both reports read the operating hours and revs from the same source but the miles from different sources. The ECU was sent to RUF and repaired in 2015 and that may have reset the mileage within the ECU that the DME report is pulling mileage from in Photo 240 (the miles do add up based on the rough dates in the Carfax).

I'm certainly not a DME guru but sharing all the info I have.

  • r3drov3r (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

If the diagnostic is accurate and was performed in March of 2021 stating that there were approx 17k miles on the vehicle at that time, it would seem that it has been driven almost 30k miles in the last 5 months. Is my analysis correct, or am I missing something? Seems like a lot of miles in a short time. Also seems like a lot of fun too.

  • Mos289 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@ClassicCarsLtd any updated dme you can post? #240 looks to be an old one when car had 17k miles and 550 hours

  • ClassicCarsLtd (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@guardsredd No worries, good question. I know the previous two owners did not track the car and it shows no signs of being tracked. Based on the DME, it has not been abused or show continued missed-shifts as you may see in some tracked cars. Taking into account all of the above, I feel confident saying this Boxster has not been abused but driven as intended by enthusiasts who knew they had something unique.

  • Hotrod356 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Great video proving the car does drive and turn Grandma,.. next time pull over so you can let that motorhome go by you geez:)

I'm trying to make sense out of the DME report which indicates 550 + - total hours. If that is the case how is the mileage over 40,000 miles. What am I doing wrong as the math works out to 80 MPH?

Perhaps of interest, should the new owner prefer more of a "Wolf in Wolf's clothing" appearance, the RUF front bumper cover is available from RUF Germany.

    Range 2: 214
    Range 3: 14

@ClassicCarsLtd oh it’s absolutely a better IMS bearing. Very few failures… It’s a great motor

  • ClassicCarsLtd (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@GT3-guy I don't disagree with your point that the 997 IMS bearing itself is a non-replaceable item but it should also be said that the larger IMS in the later M97 engines (as in this car) are far less prone to failure than the earlier engines with the previous IMS bearings.

  • ClassicCarsLtd (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@944TurboCabrio Yes, I will add an over-rev report. You are correct, there is a slight indentation in the rocker. I was told by a previous owner (it was like that when I sold it in 2020) that it was done by a shop that inadvertently left a flashlight on the arm of a lift while it was being lifted by the appropriate jack points. ie the tech was using the flashlight to correctly position the jack points, put the light on the lift arm after correctly positioning, forgot to grab it, started lifting, flashlight hit the rocker, made a slight dent and then the light slipped out before causing more damage.

  • GT3-guy 2 years, 8 monthsago

@DiamondDealer The only way to address an IMS bearing on a 2005.5- 2008 is a full engine tear down… you can’t just replace the bearing .. this is for 911-cayman/boxster

  • 944TurboCabrio 2 years, 8 monthsago

Can you put in an overrev report on the car?
Also in picture 136 it looks like the sill has been used for lifting the car in stead of the correct jacking point.
Is this just a reflection in the paint - or maybe a design feature of this model?
    Cheers

  • ClassicCarsLtd (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@DiamondDealer Another good question. There is no issue regarding the IMS bearing. RUF addressed it by using a 2007 911 X51 997 engine which is the later 3.8 engine with the revised IMS bearing design. The engine number on this RUF Porsche Boxster “S” is M97/01S68740822 (photo #227). It's important to note that the M97/01S687 supports that the engine is a 2007 3.8 X51. The S signifies the X51 and the 7 in the 687 represent the year 2007. Here is a link to a Rennlist forum that breaks down the engine numbers and how it correlates to the IMS bearing issues or non-issues:
    https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/992924-curious-m97-engine-number.html

  • DiamondDealer (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Is there any concern regarding the IMS bearing?
Am I correct in assuming that RUF addressed that.

  • estiles001 2 years, 8 monthsago

    @ClassicCarsLtd super helpful, thanks!

  • ClassicCarsLtd (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@estiles001 Great question. The car passed smog inspection 6 times after the RUF conversion since 2008. In addition to the OBDII inspection, CA also has a visual inspection in which the intake and exhaust systems are checked. If anything has been modified anywhere between the intake and the cats it must be a tested product that is stamped and approved by the Ca Air Res Board otherwise it fails regardless of the emissions output. Given the location of the powerplant of the Boxster the visual was likely never done. The CA inspectors found this car and investigated it based on my previous listing on my website where I had it listed as "CA Smog Legal" which, based on 5 successful smog inspections at that time and RUF doing the upgrade, I clearly thought it was. As a dealer I also had the Boxster smogged for the 6th time prior to the sale and it passed. Finally you can see the last smog inspection in October of 2020 on the Carfax, that was the inspection at the "smog ref"... still passed the OBDII.

  • estiles001 2 years, 8 monthsago

@ClassicCarsLtd thanks for the detail on the CARB saga, sorry that it didn't turn out very well. One clarifying question: it sounds like the authorities didn't actually test the car, just judged it based on the modifications. Has the car actually failed a smog test in the past? Asking because I live in Washington State which I believe has similar test standards but (might) not be quite as draconian on rules around modifications.

Hello and welcome to the RUF Boxster auction. I will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding the car. It's a very fun and unique car (I've read RUF converted roughly 15) and is up for auction with mixed emotion. I consigned this car and sold it car in March of 2020 to a client in southern California. My client was ecstatic with the car and was enjoying it immensely after picking it up and driving home down the coast on Hwy 1. In August I received a letter from the California Air Resources Board that stated I had sold a car that may not be compliant with the California pollution standards. A couple of months later I scheduled an appointment in Southern CA and took my clients the car to the state smog referee for inspection where it was determined modifications were made during the conversion that made it non-compliant to CA standards. Fast forward a few more months, I bought the car back from my client and will now be selling it to an out of state buyer. Sorry for the long intro but feel the explanation needs to be out there regarding the "out of CA sale". Please reach out if you have any questions. Thanks and good luck bidding!
