This 2008 Porsche 997 Turbo Coupe is finished in the Paint to Sample color of Light Blue Metallic and features a Cocoa Special Leather interior as well as optional Makassar wood trim, illuminated door sills, a painted rear center console, the Sport Chrono Package, a limited-slip differential, and a 6-speed manual transmission paired with its twin-turbocharged Mezger engine. The car has also been equipped with an aftermarket head unit, an upgraded IMS bearing, and a BBi Autosport hydraulic clutch slave cylinder conversion kit. It remains under the care of its original owner and benefits from an uncompromising service history as well as a recent pre-purchase inspection and DME report. Recently sold on PCARMARKET, this Turbo is now being offered for auction by its original owner out of Florida once again as the initial buyer failed to complete the transaction.

The owner custom-ordered this 997 in Light Blue Metallic (30T), a classic Paint to Sample color originally offered on the 1979 Porsche 911SC and 911 Turbo. The car was completely disassembled and refinished in its factory color with four layers of clearcoat in 2022 as detailed in the video below. The seller notes the hood, quarter panels, and windshield were replaced prior to painting, and the front end was covered in clear paint protection film followed by a full exterior ceramic coating. The windows have been tinted and the factory 19” 911 Turbo wheels are powder-coated black and dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport PS4 tires. The car also features premium quad exhaust tips and an upgraded rear spoiler actuator. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean one-owner CARFAX report.

The cabin features Cocoa Special Leather upholstery complemented by an optional Makassar wood switch panel and door finishers as well as a painted rear center console, illuminated door-sill guards in stainless steel, and a Porsche-crested storage compartment lid. Other options include heated Adaptive Sport Seats with Porsche-crested headrests, a Sport Shifter, and the Sport Chrono Package which adds a stopwatch lap timer to the center dashboard. The driver and passenger seats were recently reupholstered with new factory-matching leather and the seatbacks were professionally painted to match the exterior of the car. The original PCM infotainment system has also been replaced with a modern Kenwood head unit including Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth.

A twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter Mezger flat-six engine delivers up to 480 HP and 460 lb.-ft of torque to all four wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional limited-slip rear differential. The seller indicates all coolant lines have been replaced and upgraded, oil and filter changes have been completed every 6 months or 5k miles, and the fluids have been routinely flushed and replaced during his ownership. The following list of items were also replaced at the corresponding mileage intervals:

  • Water Pump (60K miles)
  • Oil/Water Separator (69K miles)
  • Heat Exchanger (69K miles)
  • Upgraded IMS Bearing (70K miles).
  • Flywheel, Clutch, Pressure Plate, Throw-out Bearing (93K miles)
  • BBi Autosport Hydraulic Clutch Slave Cylinder Conversion Kit (93K miles).
  • Rear Main Seal (93K)
  • Starter (93K miles)
  • Brakes Rotors & Pads (114K miles)
  • Battery (115K miles)

This sale will include the original window sticker, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, an air pump, a car cover, extensive service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for your interest in my auction! I am the original owner of this very special 997.1 Twin Turbo, 6-speed manual engineering marvel. I specifically requested the circa 1980 Porsche Light Blue Metallic (code 30T) color of my father's 911 SC; Porsche had not painted a 911 in this color in 26 years when I ordered it! The car's paint job was completely refreshed last year, with the entire car repainted the factory color, finishing in four coats of clear, PPF on all forward-facing surfaces, and everything ceramic coated. This car has been my daily driver for 15 years, it has been meticulously maintained (never tracked), and has zero issues (recent PPI).”

Hi. Great car! Looks like you’ve maintained it perfectly. Curious, don’t see mention of coolant lines being welded, did you have that done? I have a light Blue Metalic SC and Guards Red Turbo 997.1 and am tempted….

  • TRNR2512 (registered bidder) 8 months, 3 weeksago

Beautiful one off color, run thru completely and while there will still be repairs going forward that is true of all of the 997.1 TTs, even low mile esp sitters.

Fresh 18k rubber n paint, I would guess the owners is $50-70k lifetime rolling thru the know issues at 60-90k area.

I also like fine cars and old classic wooden boats that have a story, something meaningful to the builder or original buyer. A grandfathers dream 40 years ago, an old small Case or Deere first tractor somebody still has in the barn the father still has into his 80s, those stories. It makes them special, forever. You perfect and steward and some day somebody else will take the flag.

In 1967 I was 3 hrs old and put in a MB 250s sedan stick at the factory in Stuttgart my father picked out, factory buyer program. We drove it to Spain, used it a few years, moved to US in the Sunbelt, added King Air AC, and my mother ran it until I went to college. I had a deisel Rabbit (speed demon that I was, lol) and brought it up to school a few years later and had a cranky old German guy that I loved with 200 sq ft single stall shop restore it. Then when I moved to Chicago in the city my younger sister took over and in the early 2000s she couldn’t keep it up and sold it thru that same garage in Virginia.

This car has a story, it was pts ordered in his dad’s 911 SC color, and he has kept and expertly maintained it for 16 years as the best daily driver you could own imo. I’m sure when he and his father, who is hopefully still with him, look at it they get that warm feeling, it’s special. For me unless space or moving or something else made me consider selling it I would try to keep it. In 20 years you will feel like I do about that blue 250s, I can never replace it.

That said my garage and storage is full and but I have a very soft spot for the Cocoa interiors on a 997.1 TT. If a flipper guy or somebody that just wants to mod n dog it out buys it that would be sad to me in a way, but at the same time she was meant to run so maybe that’s where she ends up and it’s a good end to the story, I shouldn’t judge.

I’ll check in aroun 0-30, good luck everyone on this most special car.

    Drive them and have Fun!!

Been looking for a 997 manual turbo. I hope this is the one!

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 3 weeksago

Sure. A quick discussion follows as to what ultimately led to the issue. Below I speak to the three Achilles heels of the 997.1 turbo. One of those is the faulty, failure-prone hydraulic clutch slave cylinder design that taps into the power steering system to use power steering fluid pressure as a force multiplier when disengaging the clutch; it is not a matter of whether this system is going to fail, it is a matter of when. The purpose of the slave cylinder system is to hydraulically assist with overcoming the pressure plate spring force when depressing the clutch pedal during shifts, as there is not sufficient mechanical advantage to comfortably depress the clutch pedal with leg pressure only. Interestingly, the hydraulic slave cylinder is unaffectionately known as the "grenade," as the reservoir is the size and shape of a grenade. My system lived up to the hype and blew itself apart at 93K miles while sitting at a stop light at a busy intersection; the shrapnel took out the slave cylinder (of course), and also the flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and starter. This was a five-figure maintenance bill! I was only made aware of this issue on the 997.1 turbo when I suffered the consequences. The permanent fix is to get rid of the flawed design and replace the entire system with an aftermarket setup, in my case the BBi Autosport Hydraulic Clutch Slave Cylinder Conversion Kit mentioned above in the maintenance notes. This system eliminates the faulty power steering system/fluid piece completely, and I have not had any issues at all, until a couple thousand miles ago...... While driving down the street, my car went into limp mode (would not go above 4,000 RPM), threw a Crank Position Sensor code, and illuminated a check engine light. I brought the car to my mechanic, and upon inspection, he discovered that the Porsche dealership that performed the above-mentioned five-figure work failed to torque down one of the flywheel bolts, which had backed out and was slowly scraping the top of the crank position sensor! Enough material had scraped off to where it stopped reading the crank position, and the car went into limp mode, using predicted crank position values stored in the ECU. Fun huh?

  • heist (registered bidder) 8 months, 3 weeksago

Can you share what prompted you to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor at 115k miles? Were you seeing a check engine light?

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 3 weeksago

My mechanic rebuilt the spoiler hydraulic servo mechanisms twice due to leaking. After the third leak, I upgraded to a 4" Rennkit eRAM spoiler kit a few months back. No more hydraulic fluid to deal with, and no more issues. Plus, I like the extra 2-inch extension; it works seamlessly with the car's design functionality - automatic deployment at 75 mph, and automatic retraction at 37 mph. You can also manually electrically extend/retract the spoiler to any height (0-4 inches) if you don't want full spoiler extension.

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 3 weeksago

The other two Achilles heel issues I was referring to are the hydraulic spoiler mechanism and the hydraulic clutch assist. These two issues, along with the coolant lines, are items I had to address, and are items I believe will ultimately affect any 997.1 turbo.

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 3 weeksago

The camshafts are not pinned. I addressed pinning them with my mechanic and he recommended not doing so, as this car is driven regularly and the cam bearings and variocam solenoids stay well lubricated. He stated that he only sees issues with the cam assembly when the car sits for extended periods of time, the cam bearings then lose lubrication and then have the potential to spin on startup due to this dry condition. Once spun, the cam bearing oil passageway for the variocam solenoid then becomes smaller or closes out completely, not allowing oil pressure actuation of the variocam solenoid, thus not allowing the valve advance mechanism to operate correctly. With regular driving and frequent oil changes, I was advised that there is no need to pin the cams.

  • heist (registered bidder) 8 months, 3 weeksago

Thanks testfishy. You mentioned that you addressed one of the three Achilles heel of the 997 turbo, the coolant lines. Have you pinned the camshaft to address one of the other Achilles heels?

  • TRNR2512 (registered bidder) 8 months, 3 weeksago

All the 911 turbos burn some oil, more than NAs due to higher total realized combustion pressure. The 996 and 997.1 Mezgers burn about 1/2 quart per couple thousand, and the 9A1 engine in the 997.2 maybe a little less.

The air-oil separator is a common fail in all of these, especially if it has been sitting or doesn’t get run hot often enough. Bad grocery getter for the wife! lol. I change them when buying a car unless done in last 10k miles. $750 part.

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 4 weeksago

Of note, replaced the air-oil separator recently and the oil level did not move a single segment on the oil level indicator after a thousand miles.

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 4 weeksago

I add about 1/2 quart, if that, after around 2,500 miles - I have done this for the last 15 years; oil consumption is identical to the day I bought it. Zero smoke on starts. I change it every 5K or 6 months. I just had it serviced last week.

  • heist (registered bidder) 8 months, 4 weeksago

How much oil does the car burn between oil changes, if any?

  • TRNR2512 (registered bidder) 8 months, 4 weeksago

luis.seneriz no offense but I’m not really sure I would speculate that price broke the financing, and I’m not sure a perf car of this type/age should be bought where you pay 8-11% juice. It costs enough to buy them, and them to keep them happy..

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 4 weeksago

Coolant lines, one of the three Achilles heel of the 997 turbo, and one I definitely dealt with. All coolant lines going to the engine were replaced with upgraded couplings that delete the poor choice of plastic attachment points; the coolant lines going to the turbos were replaced outright. None of the coolant lines were pinned, they were either replaced with the newer upgraded metal lines, or had the attachment points replaced - no more plastic. I have not had any coolant leaks since the upgrades - unfortunately that was not the case prior to the upgrades/replacements.

  • edgy4sure (registered bidder) 8 months, 4 weeksago

btw, 120K miles is nothing on a p-car...nothing

    especially one w/a mezger engine

  • edgy4sure (registered bidder) 8 months, 4 weeksago

curious what you had done with the coolant lines (replace the old plastic bits w/sharkwerks pieces? pin? weld?)

beauty for sure, will watch. interior looks a lot like mine (leather to sample umber brown, which is really, really nice) GLWA, I'd love to score this and drive it back to Naples

I’m just happy college football started again! Now if we can also get back to Formula 1 after the summer break. Unfortunately, the original 18th century technology PCM fried - I got rid of it. And I have no idea what the blemish is on picture #33, but it is not present on the car. I will take a picture and post it tomorrow. There are no chips, cracks, or any blemishes anywhere on the car.

  • kjkaley (registered bidder) 8 months, 4 weeksago

@testfishy - tough loss to ND today! Two additional questions for you: 1. Do you have the original head unit (radio) from the car? 2. On picture #33, there is small spot between the door edge and the turbo intake. I don't see it on some other pictures. Is that just a stray piece of debris or a spot/ding? Thanks.

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 4 weeksago

The bearing was upgraded to a roller bearing. My mechanic had a turbo IMS bearing failure on another customer’s turbo due to oil quality issues. For my car, he had the engine out to replace the turbo cooling lines, and we decided to go with the upgraded bearing at that time. He stated my original bearing looked fine. Again, this was preventative maintenance only, and I'm sure that the IMS bearing failures raging in the 997 community t the time influenced my decision.

  • testfishy (seller) 8 months, 4 weeksago

It does; quoting from Total 911 -"While the engine still uses an intermediate shaft to drive the camshafts, the oil pumps are driven directly by the crank. What’s more, the GT1-derived block has a different oil gallery design that ensures the IMS bearing remains lubricated at all times."

  • Corgio2 (registered bidder) 8 months, 4 weeksago

Just curious, you have listed “Upgraded IMS Bearing”

My understanding is that this engine does not have an IMS bearing at all?

    Thanks,

Sorry guys the previous bidder didn’t follow thru because definitely he had over paid for the car. I like the car, the interior wouldn’t have been my choice by the car has a lot of miles. Anyway. I’ll bid on it and buy it at the price I’m comfortable with. I previously both a 996 triple black turbo here and I have driven it more than 8k miles since April of 22. I’m putting some more money into it but my car only has 64k miles. This is a nice car. GLWTS .

The professional paint restoration company posted a short video on my car. I was initially hesitant to pass on the website because the narrator has two misspeaks, but I will address them here. First, this car has NEVER been in an accident. I did replace the hood two previous times - one due to a rock that was thrown up by a truck that dented the hood and cracked the windshield. My insurance company, USAA, replaced both items with new Porsche OEM parts. The hood was replaced yet again, only a few months later, after a Hummer with a low hanging tow hook backed up and the tow hook dented the hood - there was no other contact with the vehicle. Again, USAA replaced the hood with a Porsche OEM hood. I just want to be totally transparent to everyone. The narrator's second misspeak is, while correct that this is a paint to sample color, he states the color wasn't originally offered from Porsche. That is incorrect, as this color is the exact Hellblau Metallic (Light Blue Metallic, Porsche Paint Code 30T) that was on my father's 1980 911 SC. It's just that Porsche had not painted any of their 911s in that color for 26 years prior to me ordering the car. You can view the restorations video at https://youtu.be/FWXXUMPhW4c?si=byffM5R42h7c8wXf.

Good morning. I'm sure I will get a lot of the great questions I received from the first auction, so please forgive me cutting and replacing some of my previous comments. After15 years of driving this car regularly, the paint was showing its age. Then in October of 2021, I went into my garage to drive to work, and to my shock the overhead storage rack in my garage had broke loose and emptied the contents of my Christmas ornaments on the front of the car; the windshield, hood, and both front quarter panels suffered damage, so I took this opportunity to completely restore the paint to the original factory Porsche Light Metallic Blue (Code 30T), vice just having the front half of the car repainted. This was a professional paint restoration, with all painted panels, lights, glass, etc. removed. I finished the restoration with PPF and ceramic coating. The hood, windshield, and both front quarter panels were replaced with new Porsche OEM parts, vice going the wrong route of trying to fix the small dents. I have included all of the restoration receipts on this site. As you can see, this was a professional, expensive restoration. It really does look like the day I picked it up from the dealership.

@testfishy - great color combo and nice story/background on the color choice. The first paragraph in the write up mentions a video regarding the disassembly and refinish. I watched your video's but don't see a disassembly. Is there another video to post or did I miss it?
In your receipts from Custom Empire on 9/28/21 it mentions comprehensive loss and the adjuster is USAA. Was there an accident - front? Why was USAA involved? The CarFax is clean.
BTW, CAPT - thanks for your service.
    Thanks
