Now up for auction is this 2008 Porsche 997 Turbo Cabriolet finished in GT Silver Metallic over Carrera Red. This first-generation 997 Turbo came well-optioned at an original sticker price of over $154k with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Sport Chrono Package, and a Natural Leather interior with extensive deviated stitching and painted hardback Sport Seats.  This example was sold new in Massachusetts and remained under the care of its original owner before it was eventually acquired by the second and current owner in September of 2020.  Equipped with a brand-new Sachs Stage 1 clutch, this Turbo shows just under 31k miles and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New Mexico.

This 997 is finished in GT Silver Metallic with a black cabriolet as well as painted side skirts and a painted rear apron.  The painted front spoiler lip that was originally optioned for the car was replaced with a standard black piece by the previous owner.  The full front end has been preserved under clear paint protection film along with the windshield surround, mirror housings, door handle recessions, door edges, and rear wheel arches.  Some very minor signs of wear are visible on the cabriolet top and the seller notes a minuscule ding on the passenger-side rocker panel, additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This 997 rides on factory 19” Turbo wheels with colored Porsche center crests and Michelin Pilot Sport tires that were reportedly mounted within the last 3 years.

This Turbo has been tastefully appointed with a Carrera Red Natural Leather interior featuring heated 18-way Adaptive Sports Seats with Exclusive GT Silver painted backings.  Deviated stitching can be found throughout the cabin along with details from Porsche’s Exclusive Department including Silver seatbelts, a steering column casing in leather, and a leather-wrapped rear center console. The seller notes minimal creasing on the seat bolsters as well as some light wear on the parking brake handle.  All gauges and accessories are also reported to be fully functional.

Regarded by many enthusiasts as one of Porsche’s greatest engine designs, this 997 is equipped with a 3.6L twin-turbocharged Mezger derived from the GT1 Le Mans race car.  This engine can deliver as much as 480 HP and 460 lb.-ft of torque to all four wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission, allowing for a 0-60 time of approximately 3.5 seconds. The optional Sport Chrono Package also allows the driver to optimize performance characteristics with the press of a button. Semi-solid engine and transmission mounts have been equipped along with a GT2 rear sway bar and DSC Sport controller module.  A brand-new Sachs Stage 1 clutch was installed at 29.5k miles along with a new OEM flywheel. The seller adds that the clutch was not replaced due to age, but to provide a more direct performance-oriented feel. All of these upgrades are described to offer an incredibly responsive driving experience with excellent stability at speed. The spark plugs are said to have been last replaced 5 years ago at 25k miles by the original selling Porsche dealer, and a standard annual oil change has been carried out under the current ownership. Additional service history can be found on CARFAX dating back to 2009.

This sale will include a set of two keys, a new Porsche Tequipment car cover, new red floor mats, and a clean title. A BBi Autosport GT2 slave cylinder upgrade kit will also accompany the sale to further improve the clutch feel should the next owner choose to install it. Showcasing a highly sought-after Mezger engine, 6-speed manual transmission, and a beautifully appointed interior, this first-generation 997 Turbo is not to be overlooked.

The mechanic presented it as incidental, something that is read out as part of the scan, but in this case completely insignificant. He said the scan as a whole was great, nothing to worry about. His name is Russ Kelso with Performance Motorcars in Corrales, NM. He's a hardcore Porsche guy that many club members use routinely instead of the dealership. He wasn't worried about it at all, and I didn't inquire as to the upper limits of normal.

    @sofialeo,
No, nothing at all. Carfax is clean, and when I had the car at the body shop to have the clear film replaced, they used a paintmeter that confirmed uniform and original thickness.
The car had paint protection film from day 1, apparently, because the front bumper, hood, everything is pristine. I replaced the PPF simply because at 12 yrs old it was beginning to slightly yellow.
Additionally, I recently purchased a paint gauge and it confirmed uniform readings throughout.
There are two imperfections. One is the tiny ding on passenger side rocker panel in front of rear wheel well where I had PDR done. The paint over the ding is a bit marred, but the defect does not go thru to metal.
Also, the car came with painted rocker panel, front air dam, and tear diffuser. The front air dam was replaced at some point with the standard matte black OEM air dam, and I've chosen not to replace it with a painted piece either. It's easy enough to do, but then one lives in fear of angled exits and entrances....
As it is, it's about as nice as a car can be without being Concours/#1.

@Selo NICE TURBO! has your car ever been in any accidents or had any type of paint work? Thank you

  • Selo (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

    @Selo "gear," not "hear."

  • Selo (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Cold start and driving videos posted. Not sure if you can appreciate from the video the very short and positive shift linkage. The build sheet doesn't say it has the short shift kit, but in my opinion it's plenty short. Also very definite and mechanical. It doesn't leave any question as to whether or not you're in hear.

Thanks for the bids and your interest.
It took some willpower to keep from driving it this weekend. Some beautiful Cab weather here in NM the past few days, but need to assure maximum quality for next buyer, darnit.....

OK, I spoke with the local Porsche expert and he read me the results of the latest DME scan.
It was performed 1/27/21 at 914.8 hours of operation. The car had 29152 miles on the Odometer at that time.
    DME report: 611 range 1 overrevs @ 911.9 hrs.
    60 range 2 overrevs @ 911.9 hrs.
Car now has 30,900 miles on odometer and has been used only to commute to Santa Fe and back for work. Easy highway miles, and the occasional top-down joyride with family on a pretty evening. Oh, and a couple Cars and Coffees.
    Cam deviation:
    Bank 1: -1.67
    Bank 2: -2.86
My mechanic says it's an excellent car with nothing to be concerned about. He says he's seen Mezger blocks with tens of thousands of range 2 overrevs that are still running strong.
    I hope this helps.

Thank you @manuals4ever. Both are great cars in their own right. I can say with certainty that whoever purchases this car will not be disappointed. I previously owned an F10 M5 competition package with a manual transmission, and while the numbers on paper are very similar to the turbo cab, omg, the power delivery in this car is so much more urgent and linear. The seat of your pants tells you you're in a world-class supercar when you drive the turbo cab.
By the way, for anyone making the trip out here to pick up the car, I'm sure I can sweeten the deal a little bit by using a few points for a hotel room for a night or two, depending upon travel needs.

Like @greateye, I too am interested in an RS60. This has the same color combo except the red top. This clearly would be a great alternate! I can't seem to get away from 2008 P-cars! I own a 08 C4S, and the RS60 is 08 MY, and now this 08 Turbo cab! Very strong desire for this Turbo! If only it was still in MA, it would be a much easier drive home to NH for me. GLWTA I will be watching with great interest!

I'm having difficulty finding the DME report. It's at least 6 months old anyway - I'll see if I can run by and have another done tomorrow.

  • Selo (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

I do have a DME report. I'll fish it out and post later. Thank you for the reminder.

I completely agree re top down motoring. I'm a die hard convertible guy for sure. It's really too bad I'm not better looking.

  • greateye (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Selo I currently own a 997.2 GT3 in arctic silver wrapped in riviera blue vinyl. Sure it's cool, but I really miss the top down ecstasy of my Boxster S... Your example is sublime. I thought I wanted an RS60 until I saw this. Wow. This one should go to the MOON!

  • Selo (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Thanks very much @greateye. I've always loved this combo - seems like it fell out of favor during production of 996 and 997, but I'm seeing a lot more red or red and black two-tone with 991. 992 TBD I guess.

  • greateye (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

OMG! Oozing Coolness with the retro silver on red pallet. Yes Please. Can you feel the torque? I can. lol. GLWTA. To the moon on this one! wow

  • Selo (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Thank you very much @fu, you are an individual of impeccable taste!
Seriously, I'm a sucker for red leather. When I saw this car advertised and was able to appreciate the quality of the interior, everything else was secondary. I would have bought it even if it were a base 911. The fact that it's a low mileage Turbo Cab manual is like hitting the jackpot several times over.
    IMHO.

  • Fu-Schnickens (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

You had me at "hola". This is one of the nicest 997 Turbos I've seen in a long while.

  • Selo (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Hola everyone, thanks very much for checking out this spectacular piece of modern Porsche history.
The car has functioned without a hiccup since I purchased it about a year ago, and all changes were made electively in order to fulfill my vision of the perfect 997.1 Turbo Cab. There are only 2 blemishes on the car of any significance, and they are minimal. The first is the subtle wear on the driver's side of the Cab top, an area measuring about a half inch by an inch, where there is a bit of "pilling" as you might see on a sweater. You have to be looking in the right light and at the proper angle to notice this. The second is the tiny ding along the passenger rocker panel, which has led to a bit of paint irregularity. I had PDR performed on this area as soon as I took delivery, and I don't believe there was any previous touch-up work done. The paint over the area shows a bit of irregularity, but the ding didn't penetrate the paint. Other than these areas and a tiny bit of wear on the seat bolsters - much less than average IMO - the car is 9.9/10. It runs like a champ, with the upgrades lending the car a linearity and directness of response that almost all Cabs lack, even Porsche. The car is everything I'd hoped for and more, yet unforeseen life events and impending changes make its sale the prudent course of action. But no hard feelings about selling - I view myself as a caretaker for these vehicles, and I'm excited to pass it along to someone who will appreciate it as much as I have.
I look forward to answering any questions you might have, either privately or in the thread.
