Up for auction is this 2008 Porsche 987 Cayman S 3.8L conversion finished in Basalt Black Metallic over a Black leather interior with Sport Seats. Built to offer performance unlike any standard 987, this Cayman S highlights over $50k worth of upgrades including KW V3 adjustable coil-overs, BBS wheels, and a custom-built 3.8 L flat-six engine that is claimed to make up to 400HP. This performance-oriented example now shows 116k kilometers (72k miles) on the odometer and is being offered by its seller in Canada accompanied by build records and the original 19” wheels.
The Basalt Black Metallic finish is said to be in very good overall condition with some minor road wear. Some slight damage is also indicated on the driver’s side rear valance (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). This 987 rides on Dark Charcoal BBS wheels dressed in brand-new Pirelli winter tires. The original set of factory optional 19” Carrera S wheels are also included in the sale and are mounted with older Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
Inside, the Black interior is reported to be in excellent shape. An aftermarket Kenwood touchscreen head unit and amplifier have been installed, although the interior is said to be otherwise stock with all gauges and accessories working properly. Factory options listed on the $85,310 (CAD) window sticker also include:
The original 3.4L flat-six engine in this 987 has been fully rebuilt and upgraded to a 3.8 L displacement. A claimed 400HP is delivered to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. During the engine rebuild the IMS bearing was upgraded, the water pump was replaced, a new flywheel and clutch were installed, and the following modifications were applied:
The stopping power has been improved with rebuilt calipers, new front pads and sensors, Sebro rotors, new brake fluid, a GT3 master cylinder, stainless steel lines, and GT3 brake cooling ducts. The suspension has also been overhauled with KW V3 adjustable coil overs, Tarret camber plates, and a custom track-oriented alignment. This 987 has experienced some track usage and the seller assures that proper routine maintenance has always been observed. Supporting service records are included and this Cayman S is said to drive beautifully with approximately 7000 kilometers (4350 miles) on the rebuilt engine.
This sale will include a set of 2 keys, owner’s books, the original 19” wheels, a KW suspension adjustment kit, the stock suspension, complete service records from the current ownership (5 years), and a clean title. With a truly impressive list of upgrades, this Cayman S is sure to satisfy any avid driving enthusiast.

Saw that. Thanks. Did you manage to find anything indicating compliance with US 2008 safety standards?
@WRENCH.56 I've sent them the photo again this morning.
@Greh3595 The fronts have about 10% left, the rears 40%.
Darren, Can you give us the age of the Pilot Sports on the Carrera S rims and the degree of wear?
@Darren I feel your pain! I found that you really have to get after them to upload photos late in the game.
@WRENCH.56 The site has the photo, they need to upload it for me. I can't up load it myself.
Good idea, Berosucci!
Darren, I cannot find the photo of the emission sticker you uploaded. Am I missing something?
Did you happen to find any sticker stating compliance with US 2008 safety standards?
No matter how the car gets here, I understand that those are the two big issues that US Customs agents with nothing better to do are looking for.
Just a thought here. Anyone planning to ship to the US may want to talk the the shipping company they would be using. They are probably familiar with process and all the documentation needed.
@WRENCH.56 I took a photo of the emissions sticker, it will be uploaded shortly.
@WRENCH.56 Nope, I don't think that.
@WRENCH.56 I'll see what I can find.
Please understand that I'm not trying to be difficult; I really like what I'm looking at with this car and have no fear of caring for the mechanical components. I just want to make sure that shipping it down here doesn't turn into some horrific nightmare, given that it's so far from stock.
@Darren I don't know about Caymans, but on every 911 I've owned, they are on the bodywork surrounding the engine bay and other miscellaneous areas. I suppose on a Cayman I would look on the door jambs or around either of the trunk areas.
There may be other paperwork, like the original sales sticker or even stated within the owner's manual or maintenance book.
In that case I suspect any form stating compliance with 2008 standards would have the VIN on the paperwork.
@WRENCH.56 Any idea where I would find such tags? If I can find them I'll take photos for you.
So importing this vehicle is manageable but not easy and does have roughly a 2.5 % surtax on it. But the bugaboo (no, not the CMH Bugaboo) is the damned emissions control issue. It's a safe bet that the 3.8 displacement with all it's oh so desirable other go fast goodies is not going to pass an emissions test. I was hoping the car was originally sold in the US and the argument could be made that it was merely being repatriated, but it wasn't. Do you have all the standard labels still on the car stating that it is fully compliant with all US (or specifically California) emissions and safety regulations? If so, please post photos.
It's not like anybody at the border would know that it's been so wonderfully modified from stock.
But if they elect to actually perform an emissions test, it's doomed!
@WRENCH.56 Its a riot to drive. Its good for everyday driving and when you want to have fun you can. The exhaust set is great, reasonably quiet when you drive nicely and it sounds like a GT3 when your on it.
Here's another link, https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car. Might be best to call CBP directly and get specific details.
Thanks for the response. It was an interesting read, but addressed only 25 year or older cars bought and paid for in Canada and driven across the border.
Got anything on newer cars loaded onto a transporter for deliver to the US?
Gotta say, looks like a great build. Must be an insane blast to drive!
Here's a link that describes how to import a car into the US.

What, and how costly or difficult, is the process of importing the car into the US?
