Among the rarest variants of the Porsche 997, the Targa model features a unique sliding glass roof system and was offered exclusively in an all-wheel-drive configuration. This 2008 example is a Targa 4S finished in Midnight Blue Metallic over a Black full leather interior. It comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission paired with its 3.8-liter engine along with the rare Makassar wood interior package, 19” Carrera Classic wheels, the Bose High-End Sound Package, heated seats, Porsche-crested headrests, and more. Having received an engine replacement from an authorized Porsche dealer along with a new clutch and flywheel, this Targa 4S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Minnesota while showing approximately 83k miles on the odometer.

The 997 Targa features a convertible hardtop system with a sliding glass roof panel, an opening rear hatch window, a retractable sunshade, and a unique chrome accent along the roofline. The top-range 4S variant is further distinguished by red brake calipers and quad exhaust tips. This example is finished in Midnight Blue Metallic and rides on optional 19” Carrera Classic wheels. Other equipment includes a speed-activated rear spoiler, front fog lights, bi-xenon headlights, and an optional rear window wiper. The seller indicates the car’s exterior shows consistent paint meter readings apart from the hood, front fenders, bumper, and mirrors as they are covered under a layer of clear paint protection film. The Michelin Pilot Sport tires show approximately 50% tread depth and date codes from 2017 in the front and 2016 in the rear. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this 997 is appointed with Black full leather upholstery accented by optional Makassar wood trim spanning the dashboard, center console, gear knob, and handbrake. Other options include a three-spoke steering wheel in leather, heated seats with Porsche-crested headrests, self-dimming mirrors, the Bose High-End Sound Package, and a 6-disc CD changer. The car is also equipped with cruise control, automatic climate control, and Porsche Communication Management (PCM).

This Targa 4S is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six engine rated at 355 HP and 295 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The car’s original engine failed at 81,606 miles and was subsequently swapped by Porsche of St. Paul with a replacement engine showing 74,315 miles at the time of installation. A new clutch and flywheel were also installed along with a new water pump, oxygen sensors, valve cover gaskets, and other miscellaneous parts. The seller adds that the battery was also recently replaced along with the hood struts, drive belt tensioner, oil, and oil filter.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, the original window sticker, a toolkit, an air pump, and a car cover.

The seller would like you to know: “Beautiful Targa C4S with a manual 6-speed.  A unique color combo and the interior has the rare Makassar Package.”

@hdarth thanks for all the info. Was the dealership just unable to figure out what was causing the check engine light?

  • hdarth (seller) 1 monthago

@callmecarl. I have owned the car that long and this is the first time that i have put it up for sale. I own multiple Porsches and this car only got driven a couple of thousand miles iver the past couple years in the summer. Otherwise it has been in climate controlled storage. I am switching up a few cars and am now selling this car.

You mentioned purchasing the vehicle about 3 years ago from Porsche of St Paul. Can you shed some light on the past 3 years - did it take that long to get all these items sorted, has it been for sale for a long time, or did you find yourself back in possession again here recently? Thanks!

This car was owned by a 62 year old DR. who brought the car to Porsche of St. Paul in June of 20 with a motor that was locked up. Porsche of St Paul put a 3.8S motor out of a S Cab in it . This Motor had 74,315 miles on it which was about 7000 less than the chassis had on it. After putting the motor in the car had a Check engine light on for the Cam deviation being out of time more than 20 degrees but the car ran perfect. The Porsche dealer ended up taking the car in on trade and we bought it from them about 3 years ago. German Auto Works went through the car and found that the car was in time but was getting an incorrect reading from the DS cam. After removing the motor and removing the valve cover everything looked fine but because we were getting the -20 reading from the pickup ring on the end of the cam we decided to try and order a new cam and see how that one was orientated. We had to order a new cam because they do not sell the pickup ring separate. After getting the new cam we noticed that the ring was positioned different on the cam so we replaced the cam as well as went through the motor and replaced AOS's and other seals and gaskets and components that were worn while we had the motor out. After doing this the cars check engine light tuned off and the car was happy again. Now there is no issues or warning lights on and the car runs and drives great and does not leak a drop or perform weird at all. Also when the motor was replaced the clutch, flywheel, water pump and some other components were replaced. Thanks for your interest and I hope this helps.

@ hdarth (seller)- Invoice states the replacement engine was a used engine Unit. Can you provide more details on the subject; sourced from what model year, mileage, was it a reconditioned unit, etc..
    Thx

Just following up on snowcones’ comment - was there an explanation of why the issue wasn’t caught/addressed during the time of the replacement?

Appreciate all the quick responses to our questions @hdarth!

I had a quick clarifying question about this comment "a check engine light on for a cam deviation. We took the motor out of the car and found that one of the cams had a tone ring that had moved and was causing a false reading to the ecu which was tripping the check light. We put a new OEM Cam with the attached tone ring in the car and that solved the problem. At the time we had the engine out we also did both of the AOS's and replaced the cam sensors and actuators."

It isn't clear in the post but who complete this work? Was it Porsche of St Paul or another shop?

I see there are two ways to upload docs and I was uploading them to the nextcloud link that p car sent me but I will convert those to Jpgs and upload them as pics directly here when I get in front of my computer. Thank you for all of your interest.

  • hdarth (seller) 1 monthago

@moosellc. The body and paint on this car are in excellent condition and the whole nose and mirrors and door edges are wrapped in ppf. The only aesthetic thing that I would do to the car would be to redo the ppf on the door edge because it is coming off. We had a couple of pdr dents removed that came out perfectly and the car is in very clean shape with only minimal wear for the miles.

  • MooseLLC (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Hi, are there any dents or dings?

@aidan786 The paint on this car is in excellent shape and in person this car does look stunning. I did upload the engine receipts to p car market but I do no see them posted yet. If you DM me I can send them directly to you if they do not get posted soon. I will look at the passenger seat closer and send you some more pics from different angles if you want.

  • hdarth (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Benjaminbopper I did just upload the receipts from Porsche St. Paul from the engine replacement. They are the ones that did the engine replacement but our shop also did work on the car after the motor was done by them. After the engine was put in the car by Porsche the car ran perfectly but it did have a check engine light on for a cam deviation. We took the motor out of the car and found that one of the cams had a tone ring that had moved and was causing a false reading to the ecu which was tripping the check light. We put a new OEM Cam with the attached tone ring in the car and that solved the problem. At the time we had the engine out we also did both of the AOS's and replaced the cam sensors and actuators. At this time we inspected the motor in-depth and everything inside looked great. The motor runs smooth and strong and is leak free. When we did this work we also replaced any gaskets and other items that were associated with the repair.

  • hdarth (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Akashk yes we did have engine checked for bore scoring and it does not have any. I am going to post the receipts from Porsche right now. I will also elaborate on the engine replacement here in another comment after I post the receipts. I also just uploaded a driving video and a cold start video.

  • Benjaminbopper (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Hi - engine replacement in carfax shows an independent shop completed it, not Porsche per the auction description. Can seller elaborate? Thanks!

Seller- beautuful car! Few questions; details on the engine replacement: what caused the initial failure at 80+k? do you have the service invoices from the work you can upload? Re: paint, looks like it's got a lot of swirl/ rough polish marks- is this the light, or does it need proper paint correction? Also, the leather on the headrest of the passenger front looks a little loose/ misformed in some of the pictures- can you clarify how the leather looks? Thanks !

Do you know if they checked for bore scoring on the replacement engine?

  • hdarth (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

I do have the invoice from Porsche from when the motor was done and I will post that shortly for your reference. The new motor that was put in was inspected and it is performing great. I will get a list of everything that I know about this motor and post it shortly. We did just service the engine and replaced both the AOS's as well. I will also be posting a driving video and cold start up video shortly. Thanks for your interest and let me know if you have any more questions.
