Now available for auction is this generously upgraded 2010 Porsche 987.2 Cayman S turbo finished in Meteor Grey Metallic.  The result of over $75k worth of upgrades carefully selected by a professional Porsche motorsports team (TPC Racing), this 987 is equipped with a DSC-controlled TPC suspension, larger brakes and a bespoke, Nicasil coated 3.4 L turbocharged flat-six engine with Carillo forged piston rods which is capable of sending approximately 400 HP to the rear wheels.  Representing the ultimate 987 for the street or track, this 6-speed Cayman S is now being offered in superb driving condition by its seller in Colorado while showing approximately 84k miles on the odometer.

The Meteor Grey Metallic finish is well-preserved with Xpel paint protection film applied over the entire front bumper, hood, fenders, rocker panels and mirror covers.  This 987 rides on OZ Racing Alleggerita HLT wheels which are finished in Black and dressed in Bridgestone RE-71R tires sized 245/40 R18 front and 275/35 R18 rear.

The Black interior has been made track-ready with the installation of a Bodymotion roll bar and OMP WRC-R seats on Brey Krause base adapters.  OMP 6pt. harnesses are also included with the sale and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.  The cabin is in nice condition with the exception of some scuff marks on the driver's doorsill.

In 2014, the 3.4 L flat-six engine in this Cayman S received a TPC Stage 2 turbocharger kit which provides for a dyno tuned output of approximately 400 HP at the rear wheels. A TPC Cobb tuning package has been installed to further improve lower end torque along with a TPC compressor bypass valve, and a TPC 997 turbo-based power steering and engine oil cooling kit.  This unique Cayman has also been equipped with a TPC upgraded sway bar kit, control arms and drop links.  Stopping power is derived from an upgraded Girdodisc big brake kit with 340mm front / 325mm rear floating rotors and Pagid RS29 brake pads. A GT3 brake master cylinder is also equipped in addition to GT3 front brake cooling ducts and a Turbo brake booster.

This 987 has seen occasional track usage with an oil change after every 3 events and a transmission fluid change for the 6-speed gearbox performed after every 6 events.  Routine maintenance has been carried out by Rennsport in Sealy, Texas and the following additional maintenance items were addressed under the current ownership:

  • Replaced Engine Compartment Temp Sensor (06/2017)
  • Replaced Air/Oil Separator (AOS) 08/2020
  • Replaced Rear Taillights with New OEM Parts (01/2017)
  • New Girodisc Brake Rotors (03/2018)
  • Replaced Right Window Regulator (06/2018)
  • Replaced OEM Shifter Cables with Numeric Racing Cables (08/2020)
  • Rebuilt Turbo and Replaced Hoses (10/2020)

This sale will include a set of 2 keys, original manuals and a handheld Cobb Accessport tuner.  A truly outstanding build, this 987 is sure to satisfy any demanding driving enthusiast.

I'm out on this one. I already race a GTB1 Cayman and was hoping this would be a great daily to complement. Still is a STEAL for any people waiting to bid. These parts and the engine build are excellent.

    @axboe Certainly

  • axboe 3 years, 5 monthsago

@MKron Do you have a build sheet that you can provide to the buyer?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@axboe the DSC is the box with all the control settings for the suspension that you can fine-tune according to your liking according to TPC (too technical for me, and never had a reason to play with it); generally speaking the suspension comprises of shocks, sway bar, control arms, links and whatever else the TPC experts put together

  • axboe 3 years, 5 monthsago

Is the DSC suspension just the controller box, or just it include springs/shocks?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Ohiolion Sorry, missed the seats and belts; these are part of the initial build in 07/2014

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Ohiolion the big ticket items include the initial build ($50K), suspension ($10K) and various performance/maintenance related items including cooling, brakes, bypass valve and other items listed in the description and the comments (~$15K)

  • Ohiolion (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Do you have an approximate breakdown of the $75k in upgrades? What year are the seats and belts?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    @Ohiolion Sorry, I do not

  • Ohiolion (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Do you have any driving video's? on track videos ?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Ohiolion The previous owner had put a tinting foil over the tail lights, which caused them to look rather dull (as if there was a spider web on the inside); didn't like the look, and replaced them

  • Ohiolion (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

May I ask why the taillights were replaced?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@chiefhandker Bought the car in June 2014, and it has been maintained by Rennsport in Sealy, TX (outside of Houston); moved to Colorado last year and car is on sale due to changes in family priorities

  • chiefhandker (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

    Hello,

How long have you personally owned the car? It looks like service was done outside of Houston, but the car is currently located in Pagosa Springs, CO? Was this from a move and the reason for the sale?

  • bldn10 3 years, 5 monthsago

I have almost this exact car, even down to the color. In normal city traffic you are off boost so it drives just like a Cayman S. And keep in mind that w/ the Cobb you can switch back to the stock tune at any time. It is not loud (too quiet for me!:-). Gets excellent gas mileage. As to power and handling on the street or track, just remember this: FASTER THAN A GT4 FOR HALF THE MONEY.

@WRENCH.56 From my personal experience this car is just fine for the public road; it's not like wheels are spinning as soon as you touch the throttle in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear; you just have some real power at your disposal when you need (or want) to pass a car (or two); I also leave the traction control on all the time, and I don't think it ever kicked in on a public road; smooth is fast as we say; now, if somebody just guns it without having basic car control skills, then things may end up badly, but that's the case with any car; if you are considering yourself an average driver, who is looking for some extra power and fun, then I don't see a reason why this car isn't a fine choice for you; you don't have to be Mario Andretti to drive this car, that's for sure; hope this helps

  • WRENCH.56 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Great build! I admire your courage in modifying the car to this level.
Truthfully, is this beast really that docile on the street? Is it manageable on the street or is like hitching a thoroughbred racehorse to a plow?
It's clearly a fabulous track toy, no doubt.

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

As we approach the final day of the auction, I would like to thank you for your comments, questions and bids. I am sure you sensed my passion for this Cayman that would have never entered this auction if it hadn’t been for a change to family priorities. To those, who plan to buy an all stock Cayman S, I say this is good choice. But why settle for good when you can have great. Those, who plan to embark on a similar upgrade journey, be aware you end up in GT4 territory. Driving this car puts a smile on my face every time. If you haven’t had many reasons to smile in 2020, you now have an opportunity to change this by placing the winning bid on this "perfectly irrational" Cayman that makes even the shortest trip a true driving event. Carpe diem.

@cerb1958 turbo lag has never been an issue for me since the car has plenty of power to begin with; however, admittedly I didn’t know what power really meant until the COBB tuning package was installed; even though it added only 11 bhp (according to TPC) it made a huge improvement to the lower end torque; as a result, the car practically catapults out of a (slow) corner, and you don’t need to be in the lowest gear and at high rpm levels either; 3rd gear is often just fine when you have momentum; TPC did a great job working with COBB to arrive at a configuration that works very well with the turbo; so, turbo lag ... never even crossed my mind in this Cayman

  • cerb1958 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

compared to a non modified engine which has zero "turbo lag", what's the lag like on this?

@Berosucci Don’t have that either, sorry; all I can tell you is that I have never been in a race with this car, and that I am not the type of driver who goes 10/10, especially since I typically take my students out; also, I spent my money on the suspension, not on a trailer; so I need the car to be in good shape to go from A to B; hope this is still of some help to you

  • Berosucci (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@MKron no error codes, but any over rev info?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Berosucci Sorry, I don’t; the mechanic checked for error codes when the car was in the shop for maintenance in October, and there were none

  • Berosucci (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Do you have a DME report?

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@BScifers You're welcome, and thanks for your bid; according to TPC they developed the exhaust for their turbo; the clutch was replaced ~20K miles ago in 01/2016 with an OEM clutch; on average I am doing about half a dozen HPDE weekends per year (except in 2020 due to covid); as an HPDE instructor I love working with my students, so doing 4 or 5 abbreviated sessions myself on a weekend - typically with my students for additional coaching - is a good average for me; as you probably already concluded, this means the car was sitting around half the time during these events, but it got talked about a lot :)

  • BScifers 3 years, 5 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $18,000

  • BScifers (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@MKron Thanks for the info! What brand exhaust system is on the car? Has the clutch been changed, and if so when? On average how many track days a year would say were done? Thanks again for the info!!

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@BScifers No worries, fair questions; had a red flag situation at the end of a long session on a hot summer day about 5 years ago; exhaust heat built up during the stoppage time and caused some of the bumper plastic to melt; adjusted exhaust position and heat shields; also added cooling support for engine oil and power steering for good measure; haven’t had any issues since then; I assume the light question is about the fog light lenses; lenses got rock chips in a road construction zone; the fog light bulbs do work; hope this helps

  • BScifers (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Sorry if theis was addressed and I missed it. Would you please explain cause of apparent damage in Pic #37? Looks like exhaust overheated and melted a portion of the bumper cover? If so, what steps have been taken to address the issue? Also, do you know what caused the damage to the lights? Thanks!!

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Berosucci ; You are most welcome; my goal was to have fun on the back roads, and a car that feels solid at high speed, especially in the corners; mission accomplished!

  • Berosucci (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@MKron Thank you for the information. Looks really well set up for the track which is what I am looking for. We'll see where the bidding goes.

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

No impact to any airbag lights due to the original seat being removed; the original seats do not come with the car; suggest to check sources such as LA Dismantler or dc automotive; the OEM rims are available separately for a reasonable offer; other than adding better/stronger shifter cables there are no changes to the transmissions/drive train

  • Berosucci (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

I have a few questions as this car checks many boxes for me. I see the stock seatbelts are there, which I need to get keep this street legal. First a couple of basics: Are there any airbag lights that come on due to the original seat being removed? Do orig seats come with? Any lastly, is there a second set of rims that come with this? Regarding performance: Any changes made to the transmissions/drive train to account for the added torque and HP from the turbo add? Any info is helpful.

  • MKron (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Thank you; it sure is a beautiful car that gets a lot of recognition wherever I go; it’s not only a lot of fun to drive on the street but also comfortable thanks to an amazing suspension; the car had ~53K miles when the turbo was installed in 2014; I also added a bypass valve to make things easier on the turbo long-term; it’s one of a kind for sure

Very nice Cayman, I’m seeing a wonderful HPDE Porsche here.

Quick question. What was the mileage when the TPC turbocharger was installed in 2014? GLWA!
