Now up for auction is this 2012 Porsche 987.2 Boxster Spyder finished in Carrara White over a black leather interior with Alcantara. Unveiled at the 2009 Los Angeles Motor Show as the lightest model in Porsche’s lineup, the Boxster Spyder features a minimalist driver-oriented cockpit, aluminum panels, an uprated engine, and lightweight 19” wheels. This 2012 example was originally delivered to Porsche of Fremont in California and is believed to be one of only 141 Boxster Spyders sold in the U.S for the model year.  It came optioned with a desirable 6-speed manual gearbox, Sport Chrono Package Plus, and over $10k worth of exclusive options including instrument dials in Carrara White, the Sport Exhaust System, Additional Alcantara Interior Package, black-painted wheels, and more.  Acquired by the current owner in 2014 and routinely serviced by a Porsche Dealer ever since, this rare Boxster Spyder is now being offered for auction out of Louisiana with just over 18k miles showing on the odometer.

This Spyder comes finished in Carrara White with black Porsche side graphics, a black soft top, exclusive painted roll bars, and an optional rear model designation delete. The manually operated convertible roof helps to save weight along with the aluminum door panels, and aluminum double-hump rear decklid. The mirror housings have been preserved under clear paint protection film and two small imperfections are noted on the rear bumperettes, additional photos can be found in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX. The factory 19” Boxster Spyder wheels feature an exclusive black-painted finish and come dressed in a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires mounted in 2014.

Inside, this Spyder features a black leather and Alcantara interior with factory carbon-fiber bucket seats. Unique features of the Spyder include lightweight RS-style fabric door pulls, a painted center console, and an exposed instrument cluster.  Options from Porsche’s Exclusive Department include the Additional Alcantara Interior Package, instrument dials in Carrera White, a Sport Look footrest, and an Alcantara storage compartment lid with an embossed Porsche logo.  A complete list of factory options is provided below:

This Spyder is equipped with a mid-mounted 3.4L flat-six rated at 320 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque.  This naturally aspirated engine was factory tuned to provide a 10 HP increase over the standard Boxster S.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission, allowing this Spyder to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in approximately 4 seconds.  In addition to its weight savings, the Boxster Spyder was also factory tuned with a lower and firmer suspension for improved handling.  This example comes equipped with the Sport Chrono Package Plus and the Sport Exhaust system for an enhanced driving experience. The seller reports all routine services to have been carried out by Porsche of New Orleans under their ownership with the exception of the most recent oil and filter change.

This sale will include factory books, an original window sticker and a clean Carfax.  Regarded as one of the greatest driving modern Porsches, this highly collectible 2012 Boxster Spyder 6-speed awaits its next owner.

I own one of these and have a friend that owns one as well. He also owns an original Speedster and claims that the 987.2 is the closest modern vehicle out there that offers a similar experience and level of enjoyment as his Speedster. I’ve never driven a Speedster but I do know that I love my Spyder. It is THE perfect weekend/drivers car.

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

The top has been treated with Sunbrella fabric protectant. I just went back through all the photos and realized the photo showing the water beading on the top was not included.

Thank you everyone for your bids and your comments so far. In the final couple hours of this auction I will have my phone on me so please feel free to reach out with any other comments or questions you may have. I will be sad to see this car leave, I would not hesitate to jump in it and drive across the country at a moments notice. She is only being sold because I have an impending retirement next May and I decided to keep two air cooled cars as I’m moving to a house with a two car garage. This is the closest thing I have ever come to that evokes memories of an air cooled Speedster. I am sad to see it go.

  • PorscheTG (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

I miss my 2011 Spyder - what a driver’s car. This one is a perfect spec. Someone is going to have a great Holiday!

  • drjoe356 2 years, 4 monthsago

@rhmoritz Don't worry about the top. A glance at Raindar before you go for a drive goes a long way. Also learning to do it efficiently after a few tries serves to move you to a higher plane of "Enthusiast".
Would recommend a Covercraft top for use when out and about. Takes 45 seconds to put on and keep leaves, dust and the unexpected shower out of the cockpit while parked.
This auction has already exceeded what I paid for the 12K mi. White Spyder purchased a year ago, for which I thought I paid "too much". The driver for that purchase was the rationale of "Which decision am I most likely to regret 3 months from now?". The first drive only served to convince me that I may, in fact, be getting wiser. Have put about 4K mi. on it so far and each mile is another happy memory. Notably, I would feel the same way if the car had decreased in dollar value the same amount it has apparently increased as the psychic value is off the charts.
The Gen 1 Spyders embody the fully distilled Porsche experience on the level of the '73 Carrera RS (put 50K mi. on that one) and the opportunity to acquire one in this condition deserves very serious consideration.

@Marine_Blue thank you for the information. My local dealer is more than an hour from where I live and they’re located next to the busiest shopping mall in the city of New Orleans. I went out there today to do some shopping and it was a chaotic traffic nightmare - not to mention the road construction. I am terrified of damaging the car. And the 7 1/2, almost 8 years of ownership I have never had an issue with the engine or anything else other than the switch at the base of the clutch. At this point, I would not feel comfortable removing the car from my garage for fear being damaged or in an accident. The memory is still fresh in my mind of a beetle convertible I was bidding on on another auction website that the gentleman pulled it out to film a video someone requested and the car was totaled hours before the auction end. if someone has a concern or an issue, I can completely understand but at this point I simply don’t feel comfortable as I’m not in a financial position to take the loss of what it would do to the car. I am an aircooled guy, the only DME I know of is the relay under the seat of a Carrera 3.2 that you carry a spare in the glove box. I did not know of this report and most certainly would have had it done before auction listing had I known.

  • Marine_Blue (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Adguy924CGT I would just drive the car over there and ask them to run a DME report, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes and $50. It’s literally a laptop with software loaded on it and a special cable that connects the laptop to the car. You then use a drop down menu and can choose to see how many times, if any, that the engine has hit or exceeded redline. Hitting redline is no big deal and shows as a Range 1. Exceeding past Range 3 can result in damage to the engine which could result in catastrophic failure.

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@pennbee thank you for the clarification, it’s not something I am familiar with. If it is any consolation I can tell you for the last eight years it has been driven like a little old lady owns it, no offense to little old ladies. I cannot get the dealer to return my call and that’s even after texting the general manager on her cell.

  • pennbee 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Adguy924CGT Thanks for the reply. So, the over rev report / DME is different from the paint meter readings / undercarriage (thanks for posting those). It basically is a report to show whether or not there was one or many engine revolutions over or above the maximum number of engine revolutions per minute the engine manufacturer has deemed safe. This helps buyers ascertain if there has been aggressive treatment of the engine and subsequent wear. This type of report will help buyers assess the car when making a bid. Thanks,

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@pennbee The dealer has still not yet returned my call from my request so I would say that there was no way it would happen before the auction end. Additionally, the dealership is next to a major shopping mall and it’s Christmas season, I don’t feel comfortable taking the car there and risk damaging it. I would point you to the paint meter photos you asked for and the underside photos that show a car that is nearly as clean underneath, without having ever been cleaned underneath, as it is on top. In the nearly 8 years I have owned this car has never done anything but made an interstate run to my house in another state and driven short distances. It has never seen a track or an underaged driver. It lives in a climate controlled building and I’m too old to drive aggressively.

  • pennbee 2 years, 4 monthsago

Any update on getting the over-rev / DME report?

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

A walk around video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/u8Cdr8EGBNs

Also, underbody and paint meter reading pictures have been posted.

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@pennbee I was able to purchase a small All Sun paint thickness gauge from the local autobody supply store. The car reads either 4.0 mils, 5.0mils, or 6.0 mils depending on the body panel. I am told that this means the car is all factory original paint. Photos have been sent to P Car Market.

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Everyone, a three minute 18 second walk around video along with underside photos has been sent to the folks at P Car Market. Also, I have a brand new set of black pieces for under the front bumper in case the originals were ever damaged, they never were but they will be included in the sale. And, pulling this car out of the garage and realizing how perfect it is I’m going to make one request of the eventual purchaser. My only request is that you please transport this car to its new home via enclosed transport.

  • pennbee 2 years, 4 monthsago

    @Adguy924CGT Thank you!

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@pennbee no body work or painting has been done to the car and I would reference you to the Carfax that PcarMarket attached. The car has lived in my climate controlled facility for the entire time I’ve owned it. I have left a message at the local dealer to find out about the report you referenced. As to a paint meter, I’ll have to see if one can be purchased locally before the auction end. I plan to post a walk around video and underside pictures as soon as the weather clears.

  • pennbee 2 years, 4 monthsago

Hello! Please post 1.) latest DME report 2.) paint meter readings for all panels / parts (and confirm if any re-painting / body work has been done). Thanks!

@rhmoritz I just looked it up and Standard Sport Bucket Seats (non-carbon) were an option and listed as number [388]

  • shy 2 years, 4 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $63,500

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@rhmoritz yes, they were original to the car. I have seen them for as much as $25,000 in the aftermarket. The carbon seats were standard, in my understanding, and you had to option for the non-carbon seats. Many cars do not have the carbon seats but, I am a big man, and I have had no issues with them on long drives as far as comfort or fitting into them.

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@adguy924cgt I recall May trying to install the top while a commercial grade sprinkler was employed to add to the drama. I may have missed it on the window sticker, but were the carbon buckets factory installed?

  • Adguy924CGT (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@rhmoritz not difficult at all to remove or install the top. Porsche has a video on you tube and I put it on my phone and watched it while doing it the first two or three time and haven’t needed it since. James May on a Top Gear episode did installation of the top and he very greatly exaggerated it for effect on television.

  • rhmoritz (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

One of my favorite P-cars. Stunning photos of a well optioned Spyder. How difficult is the top to remove and install?

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

White looks beautiful on a Spyder, very nice options on this particular example. Lightweight and fast too. Good luck with the sale, this will be fun to watch.

Thank you for viewing my auction. I searched for a long time to find a 2012 Spyder with a 6-speed and Carbon seats. My son found this one with Porsche Exclusive options traded at the Audi dealer in New Orleans, the day it was traded! I have loved this car for almost 8 years and am only selling due to impending retirement and moving. In the Carfax you’ll see where it says clutch checked - clutch wasn’t checked, that was replacement of the electrical switch at the clutch that controls starting - the only issue I’ve had in 8 years. Please ask any questions - at one point I was the largest Porsche collector insured by Chubb Collector Car Insurance.
