The most performance-focused model of the 987 generation, the Cayman R features a lowered sport-tuned suspension, an exterior Aerokit package, and weight-saving design features. This 2012 example is finished in Carrara White over a Black interior and was configured with the Sport Chrono Package Plus, BOSE Surround Sound System, Bi-Xenon headlights, automatic A/C, and PCM with Navigation among other premium options. It was acquired by the seller over 3 years ago and has since received an investment of over $100k including an upgraded 997.2 Carrera S 3.8-liter engine, an OEM limited-slip differential, Öhlins coilovers, Tarett sway bars, GT3 control arms, a Numeric Racing shifter, Rennline pedals, a BBI roll bar, GT2 carbon fiber bucket seats, an Alcantara headliner, an Alcantara SportDesign steering wheel, 18” Apex wheels, 997.2 GT3 body pieces, and much more. Supported by complete build records, this modified Cayman R is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California while showing 69k miles on the odometer.

The Cayman R features lightweight aluminum door panels, gloss-black painted mirrors, black-framed headlight assemblies, and black Porsche script side stripes. This example is finished in Carrara White and has been modified with a 997.2 GT3 Cup front bumper, splitter, and carbon fiber brake ducts as well as a GT3 RS rear wing and 18” APEX EC-7RS wheels measuring 9” wide in front and 10” wide in the rear. The car rides on a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar sized 245/40/18 front and 275/40/18 rear. The seller indicates the car recently underwent a full paint correction and ceramic coating treatment along with an application of clear paint protection film to the full front bumper, hood, fenders, and lower rockers. A few cosmetic imperfections are present throughout the exterior including small chips and scratches. The seller adds that a new windshield has been installed and the car was always hand-washed by a professional detailer. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, the Cayman R features lightweight RS-style door panels with red pull straps and matching seatbelts along with exterior color-matched trim pieces and a hoodless instrument cluster. It has been customized with a pair of GT2 carbon fiber bucket seats along with a BBI roll bar, an Alcantara headliner, an Alcantara-wrapped SportDesign steering wheel, and a Rennline pedal set. Other accessories include a Rennline fire extinguisher and mount, a driver’s seat tilt bracket, Schroth safety harnesses, and Brey Krause substrap mounts and brackets. The car also came factory-equipped with automatic A/C, PCM with navigation, Universal Audio Interface, Bluetooth, and the BOSE Surround Sound System. The seller notes a few scuffs are present on the A-pillar trim, lower sills, and center console. Some of the rubberized coating on the plastic trim pieces is also showing age.

Power comes from a 3.8-liter flat-six engine derived from a 997.2 Carrera S donor car with 52k miles and a PDK transmission. The engine underwent leak down, compression, and borescope tests before installation and has been upgraded with an IPD intake plenum, a GT3 throttle body, an EvoMS air intake, a Capristo valved header-back exhaust system a third radiator, Function First orange mounts, and a Cobb Accessport with an SP tune. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission with a Numeric Racing shifter and cables, a Sachs sport clutch and pressure plate, an Aasco lightweight flywheel, and an OEM limited-slip differential. The chassis has been fitted with Rennline subframe stabilizers and jack plates and the suspension features Öhlins Road & Track coilovers, 996 GT3 front control arms, and Tarett sway bars and drop links. The braking system has also been upgraded with a GT3 master cylinder, stainless-steel brake lines, Ferodo brake pads, and Sebro slotted rotors. The seller notes that approximately 1,500 miles have been driven since the engine installation and the original engine is included in the sale along with a collection of spare parts and extras. All maintenance items are said to be up to date including replacements of the serpentine belt, spark plugs, coil packs, transmission service, rear main seal, low and high-pressure fuel pumps, water pump, vacuum pump, a new clutch kit, ECU, and wiring harness.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, the original engine, new lower rocker paint protection film, extra Ferodo track brake pads, OEM factory-painted interior trim, a new cabin filter, various intake filters, OEM seat mounts, various wheel spacers, new brake pad wear sensors, the OEM brake master cylinder, carbon fiber mirror covers, OEM amber reflectors, an extended wheel stud kit, and many other miscellaneous parts and accessories left over from the engine swap.

The seller would like you to know: “I have had the car for over 3 years now and have put 9k miles on it. Since I first got the car, the goal was always to transform it into what a 987 “RS” would have been from the factory. With over $100,000 invested in parts and labor, the car has been completely transformed while maintaining a period-correct factory look and feel, utilizing nothing but the best OEM and aftermarket parts available. The entire process has been posted throughout my socials and the build is fully documented in detail on my Rennlist journal linked here.  I have put about ~1500 miles on the car after receiving it from the engine swap and it’s been amazing. The sounds it makes are absolutely intoxicating. The driver engagement this car offers is as good as it gets. The RS presence turns heads everywhere you go. This is an absolute driver's car and not one built for show or to sit in a garage. The car is ready for many more miles and to be driven and enjoyed like it was designed and modified to be.”

this is better than a 981 GT4. I said it. better gearing, better steering, less weight, and far more unique.

  • ehpracing (seller) 4 monthsago

@D_Flying_Low This is the one to have! It needs nothing but someone who can drive the hell out of it. I don't think there will be another 987 like this again.

  • D_Flying_Low (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

Man I’ve been debating and working on justifying the need for this in my current lineup lol. I already have a dialed in 987 but nowhere near this bad boy. Cant overstate how good you did on your vision seller.

@PorscheGeek yeah they have been averaging 16-18k which is ridiculous. Ever since Porsche announced they would be discontinued prices have shot up!

  • PorscheGeek (registered bidder) 4 monthsago

Funny - when you look at the window sticker and see the sport seats were a $0 option, and today those same seats sell on auction sites for $14K (!))

The more you study this CR 3.8, the more you realize thus is a Home made, organic, artisan, custom crafted GT4

Just uploaded a list of all the spare parts left over from the swap. Alongside these I will be including a bunch of OEM and aftermarket parts. A few of these are listed in the Ad above.

We are approaching the last 24 hours of the auction. Im happy to answer any and all questions about the car. I did want to say that with the imminent transition to electrification, we are sadly going to see less and less of these analog, manual, and naturally aspirated drivers cars around. This may very well be the last 987, especially an R, to receive a transformation of this scale. Those who know, the 987 platform is extremely capable and an absolute blast to drive. This car takes everything that’s so amazing about the chassis and turns it up to another level without ruining what makes the platform so special. This is in my opinion the peak of 987 and I hope the next owner appreciates it as much as I do!

@luis.seneriz It sure is a blast! I think it’s the perfect amount of power for this chassis. Keeps it engaging and still fun around town. I can only imagine how ridiculous the turbo is.

  • luis.seneriz (registered bidder) 4 months, 1 weekago

@ehpracing. Thanks. My cable throttle 99 is at 330hp with 2750 lbs. your car must be a blast to drive all out. Now my turbo is at 650 hp, that’s an insane video game.

@Gjohn_ston thank you! I am not factoring in any of my personal time and labor into that number. It is purely based on labor done by shops when working on the car and installing parts. Otherwise, that number would be much higher lol! I spent a few months on the body work alone.

  • Gjohn_ston (registered bidder) 4 months, 1 weekago

Amazing car! I notice you did a lot of the work … so when you say “$100,000 in parts and labor” are you factoring in your time at some hourly rate?

Guys - definitely click on that link in the description that takes you to the Rennlist website where this cars journey is documented throughout its build and transformation. I stumbled upon it approx 9 mos ago and was riveted on the process, care, detail and ideas that were executed on this exceptional build. This is a special Porsche - GOOD LUCK !

  • ehpracing (seller) 4 months, 1 weekago

Hey everyone, happy to answer any questions regarding the car. A few things I wanted to note:

    1. The car received a full PPI with paint readings which I will be uploading shortly.

    2. There are some notable stains in a few of the pictures uploaded. Specifically on the drivers door, on the roll bar, and the aluminum trim piece right under the roll bar. Those came about during the PPI right before the photoshoot and didn't get wiped down. Nothing permanent.

    3. The car has been fully washed and cleaned inside and out and will remain parked in a garage until we reach the end of the auction. If someone is local and would like to see the car in person they are more than welcome to check it out.

  • ehpracing (seller) 4 months, 1 weekago

@burnrubr I’ll have to double check but from what I remember the car was right around ~3050lbs. The car was tuned by SP Motorsports and its ~370whp conservative. The focus was on drivability
    /reliability and not shear power.
