Built by Porsche Motorsport to be used in their U.S. customer racing series, the Porsche 964 Carrera Cup cars began as European-market Carrera RS models which were reconfigured to meet U.S. regulations and then shipped to Porsche’s motorsports partner Andial to be modified for racing. As the with Carrera RS, the Carrera Cup features a seam-welded chassis, an aluminum hood, a limited-slip differential, and a blueprinted 3.6-liter flat-six engine. When the Carrera Cup series was canceled shortly before its first scheduled race, the cars were distributed and sold through Porsche dealers throughout North America. This 1992 example is one of 45 cars imported to the U.S. for the Carrera Cup series, one of 29 cars that were shipped to Andial to be prepped for racing, and among only four that were intended to be parts cars. It was delivered new to the Sewickley Car Store of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and was acquired by the current owner in 2019. Recently sold on PCARMARKET, this authentic 964 Cup is being offered for auction by its seller out of New Jersey once again as the original winning bidder failed to complete the transaction.

The 964 Carrera Cup comes without a sunroof and shares its special seam-welded chassis and aluminum hood with the Carrera RS. This example is finished in Grand Prix White and features Carrera Cup graphics on the doors, a cowl-mounted external cutoff switch, a front tow hook, a B&B dual exhaust, and aluminum 17” Cup wheels which were professionally refinished in 2020 and mounted with new Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires in late 2023. Front fog lights were also added in 2023. The seller notes a replacement Sigla windshield has been installed and rust repair was performed to the windshield cowl and battery tray in 2020. The car saw track use under prior ownership and received paintwork on the passenger front fender and driver rear quarter. Some chips and cracked paint are present on the right-rear quarter panel and the car has an older layer of front-end paint protection film that shows signs of age. Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black interior was fitted with a pair of replacement electrically adjustable seats in April 2023. Equipment includes lightweight RS-style carpeting, RS-style door panels with red pull straps, power windows, airbags, a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, and an engraved Carrera Cup USA placard on the passenger-side dashboard. The seller indicates a previously installed bolt-in roll bar and telemetry equipment have been removed.

Shared with the Carrera RS, the Carrera Cup features a blueprinted 3.6-liter M64/03 flat-six engine with hand-matched pistons and cylinders, sport-tuned DME engine management, solid rubber engine mounts, and a lightweight flywheel. Up to 256 HP and 240 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed G50/10 manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. An aftermarket B&B dual exhaust system was installed under prior ownership and new Carrera RS-style Bilstein dampers were installed in March 2023.

This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a Porsche Carrera Cup Technical Training Binder, a Porsche Production Specifications Certificate, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “We are proud to present our latest Enthusiast Spec listing on PCARMARKET! This 27k-mile 1992 Porsche Carrera Cup USA is 1 of 45 cars imported to the US for the Carrera Cup series, 1 of 29 cars that was shipped to Andial to be prepped for the series, and 1 of only 4 which was intended to be a parts car. Due to the lack of sponsorship and sales, the race series was canceled before it started, and these cars were later sold through the Porsche dealer network as the Carrera Cup Edition. These cars feature an M64/03 engine, a seam-welded chassis, an aluminum hood, a sunroof delete, lightweight door glass, a G50/10 transmission with shorter gearing, and larger brakes among other upgrades. In other words, this is the closest car to a Euro RS that we received in North America!”

@trkshoe: You and I both considering it was bid to $262k just a couple weeks ago but both high bidders fell through. We are currently entertaining offers and still motivated to sell.

  • trkshoe (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 3 daysago

Kinda surprised it didn't get to $200

  • enthusiastspec (seller) 3 weeks, 3 daysago

Thank you to everyone for their bids and comments over the past week. Unfortunately, we were too far off the reserve to sell the car.

@slloffcorp I believe PCar will provide us with your contact info and perhaps we can workout a deal.

    Thanks,

As the “stunt driver” of the car in the video, I approve this auction :) It’s a really nice 964 and dergarage.com has enjoyed being part of keeping it running as it should.

    TL;DR; - I’ll summarize – this 964 is huge fun to drive.

As someone who has been fortunate enough to spend a few hours behind the wheel of this Cup Car, but not fortunate enough to have spare garage space (and change) to keep it permanently, I agree with @cobalt. This is the strongest street friendly 3.6 964 I’ve ever driven. The RS shocks are just right, and handle tooling around town as well as backroad barnstorming or a track day without punishing you.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts here. Just a pleasure to drive, with a grin inducing soundtrack (listen to the attached mp3) and ideal air cooled 911 front windscreen view. Excellent chassis dynamics without any electronic nannies or power steering getting in the way. Brakes are outstanding. G50 transmission shifts perfectly. And it looks pretty good as well, but am especially partial to the official German motorsport white on my fun cars.

It really needs nothing to enjoy it straight away. Just put in the key, start it and drive on.

The fact that it has such an interesting history and is a rare bird is icing on a very delicious cake, I’ve owned two 964s and driven many as a driving instructor. This is one of the good ones :)

Just a few hours left to bid on this special 964!

One thing I always like to mention, I’ve had a few people in the past comment that they have had issues bidding from their phone in the final seconds. If possible I always recommend being by a computer with a good internet connection for the grand finale.

@rockminster: You may have a second chance to acquire a 964 Carrera Cup USA if you are still interested!

    Best of luck!

With under 24-hours left in this auction we just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for their comments and bids thus far!

I also wanted I wanted to take a moment to highlight a few of the unique items that make this car a very unique 964.

1 of 45 cars imported for the US Carrera Cup series
1 of 29 cars that was shipped to Andial to be prepped for the series
1 of only 4 which was intended to be a parts car for the series

The Carrera Cup Edition car is essentially the European Carrera RS Basic N/GT car with added safety equipment to make the car USA legal.

    It features the following items:
    M64/03 engine
    Seam welded chassis
    Aluminum hood
    Sunroof delete
    Lightweight door glass
    G50/10 transmission
    Limited Slip Diff
    Larger brakes
    Radio Delete
    A/C Delete
    Manual Side Mirrors

With brand new tires, suspension, shifter bushing, fluids, and alignment completed in April/May of 2023 and just over 27k-miles, this car is ready to be driven and enjoyed! If anyone has any additional questions please leave a comment or click the Contact Seller button at the top of this page.

    Best of luck!

@burnrubr: I can assure you it's like no other 964 we have experienced! Slightly more refined than a European RS (power windows, ventilation, and air bags), but much more raw and exciting than a standard US 964 C2 (weight savings, gearing, blueprinted engine, and RS suspension).

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 4 daysago

I can't imagine the feeling driving this car; the lightness approximately +/- 2700 lb, 260+ hp, factory short gearing, the engine sound without sound deadening materials, the ease of clutch engagement, the fresh RS suspension, etc... equals Real Visceral Driving Experience (RVDE) unique to these 45 examples ever made.

Redgard: The US cup cars were imported with basic comfort seats to meet DOT standards, and this car being 1 of 4 Andial parts cars never had Recaro’s installed at Andial. Even the Andial cars that did get Recaro’s eventually had them removed to be sold with comfort seats as street legal cars at dealerships.

With that said, when our client purchased this car it had a Recaro halo drivers seat and SPG passenger seat that expired and he opted to replace them with these for a more street friendly driving experience, and to return the car closer to its original configuration.

  • redgard (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 6 daysago

This car has Sofa seats in it now? Are the original seats included with the sale?

  • enthusiastspec (seller) 3 weeks, 6 daysago

@trkshoe: We are not aware of any panels being replaced and the only paint work done under current ownership was the windshield/cowl area and front tub repairs that were both completed by a very reputable Porsche focused shop (RSR Auto Body Restoration in Wycoff, NJ). We do know the car was tracked under previous ownership (like most Cup cars) and based on the paint meter readings it has had some paint work done over the years in the areas that read higher (see gallery). The rear qtr’s, front fenders, and passenger side door appear to be higher, while the hood, roof, rear decklid, and drivers side door all appear to be indicative of original paint.

The roof is especially nice to see with such low numbers as cars that are converted to a sun roof delete, or have paint work done, never seem to be quite the same as the original sunroof delete cars from the factory (ie. body filler, uneven finishes, etc.).

@burnrubr I was lucky enough to spend some time going over most every inch of the car. Inspecting and fixing as needed. One major improvement was the new RS suspension I installed and had aligned to proper specs. Amazing how good these feel on fresh shocks and springs. But what was most important to me was always leaving its original patina where I could. To my surprise the car was in far better shape than most 964's I come across. I went to remove the rear heat shields at the back of the engine expecting to see a lot of grime and oil only to find very little of anything. In fact something I rarely see were the sound deadening pillows still in prefect condition. So I cleaned the minuscule amount of grime and put everything back. I love to have special rare examples like this to get to understand the differences.

As these might be part of the Carrera cup count these are all US spec vins part of the standard 92 US C2 and came in as such. They are in some ways quite different than the RoW Cup cars. These all came in as street legal cars fully US DoT compliant yet wearing RS bits and seam welded tub, uprated engines and short geared transmissions and much more. So unlike the RoW cup these have the crash side impact bars in the doors with power windows and working ventilation & airbags. Something you won't normally find on an RS and or Cup car. I personally had too many 911's without power windows and I can't live without them unless it is on track and always down. I own a number of 964's both street and track and this is the only true 964 IMO that can do both well and has a unique past unlike any others.

I have known most of the US spec cups and many RoW cup cars I spent track time with back 15-18 years ago when these were cheap and considered fast. Although cars have become more capable not many thrill like these earlier cars and are surprisingly very capable with 1/5th of todays HP. Whats best is how many can say they have one of 4 US spec cup car parts cars. Why try to emulate it by building one when you can have the real deal?

@cobalt Agree. Any Carrera Cup, Carrera RS N/GT are holy grails and should soon be worth more than any modified Singer, Guntherwerks, etc etc.. Just a reminder for anyone looking at this, Production numbers: 964 Carrera Cup - 270 produced (45 of which were converted in the USA, like this one) | 964 Carrera RS N/GT “Clubsport” - 290 produced | 964 Carrera RS - 2276 produced

I spent some quality time with this car. For those that know me I am probably the 964's biggest fan and own 5. I feel this is the ultimate N/A 964. A car that can be driven comfortably on both street or track. Has just enough patina to make you not worry over a small blemish and yet can be placed in a museum as one of a rare handful of special built 964's for the US market. This is the true US spec RS much different and superior to the RSA. In the US the only 964 more rare is the 1994 Turbo S flachbau with only 39 examples. Those are million dollar plus cars I foolishly passed on when they were barely 6 figures. The US spec CUP is a true piece of Porsche history that so few know about. If someone doesn't buy this I might have to. It keeps calling to me. This might be the other that got away and I suspect one day these will be worth considerably more.

Things happens for a reason and this is another chance for someone out there that missed the opportunity during the last two auctions. It's a patina car and not a museum piece so you won't feel guilty putting miles and enjoy her for years to come. Good luck with the sale!

@Bergwerk: Yes, the car did not meet its reserve on BaT last year. I encourage you and anyone else interested to lookup that listing and read through the comments and bids as there is several past and present cup car owners that chimed in.

Our client is very motivated to sell and we thought we had a perfect buyer here on PCar during our last listing, but for no apparent reason they failed to follow through with the purchase. We are standing by our client until we find the right buyer and get this one sold!

I'm confused that the video ends with a graphic for bringatrailer. Was there also a previous uncompleted sale there too?

    Hello everyone,

I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, my name is Dave and I own and operate Enthusiast Spec and I am excited to represent this special 964 Carrera Cup USA on behalf of my client! Unfortunately, as the listing states, the winning bidder from our previous PCar Market listing has failed to complete the transaction. While this is disappointing, we are happy to make the car available again here on PCar Market.

This is 1 of 45 cars imported for the US Carrera Cup series, 1 of 29 cars that was shipped to Andial to be prepped for the series, and 1 of only 4 which was intended to be a parts car for the series. A dedicated group of Carrera Cup owners have compiled a wealth of information on these US Cup cars on https://www.carreracupusa.com. These cars have a fascinating story and I encourage everyone to visit their page.

I will be monitoring the auction closely over the next 7-days so please feel free to comment if you have any questions at all.

    Best of Luck,
    Dave@Enthusiastspec
