DEAL TANK: 1991 Porsche 964 C2 Cabriolet

This 1991 Porsche 964 Cabriolet has covered 74,180 miles since new and is finished in classic Guards Red with a contrasting tan interior. The current owner describes this car to be in excellent condition, especially when considering its age and mileage. This cabriolet retains both its original 3.6L (M64) engine and 5-speed transaxle, which the owner states are in excellent running condition.

Accompanying the vehicle are its original keys, books, tonneau boot cover and tools. Purchased by the seller in 2017 with just over 70k miles, this vehicle has been driven sparingly since and used primarily for nice-weather driving.

According to the Carfax, mileage entries were entered periodically since the vehicle was originally sold to its first owner in Lake Ozark, MO back in 1991 . The current owner believes it to still have all of its original paint and is able to supply records dating back to 2016. Completed by Z Mech in NC, a comprehensive engine-out service and clutch replacement were done just prior to his purchase.

The photo set clearly shows this vehicle to be in excellent cosmetic condition including the soft top which shows no visible signs of excessive wear. Only minor wear and tear is noted to be present. The seller states there have been no mechanical modifications to the vehicle other than the air intake. The original Blaupunkt radio is present, however, it is reported that the speakers will need to be replaced. A/C, heat, and windows are reported to be in good working order. A recent visit to his mechanic gave way to the following findings:

  • The top is operational, but sometimes does get stuck on the right side when putting it up.
  • There is one extremely minor valve cover leak.

The Porsche 964 Generation is considered by many to be the best of all Air-Cooled Porsche models. The 964 elegantly blends traditional 911 design elements with a sporty yet comfortable ride quality. The dashboard retains many elements of the G-body cars while introducing new technologies such as dual airbags, ABS brakes, and Power steering. Mounted in front of the more modern feeling shifter are controls for the power door locks and active aero spoiler. A number of of mechanical advancements were also introduced with the 964, such as redesigned suspension components and the M64 engine.

Sorry - one more comment - temperature control unit was replaced (about $3k) last fall and battery was replaced in December as was the windshield due to a crack.

Hi PCar friends. Seller here. Thought I'd give you a bit of additional information. I'm a long time Porsche enthusiast and this is my fourth 911. I have had the car for just about a year; my hope was to keep it for several years but purchasing a house forces me to sell early. I bought the car locally in East Hampton, NY and it has been living at my weekend home in Sag Harbor, NY over the last year.

Overall the car is in great condition. There are a few nitpicky things that I would have addressed if I were keeping it. Those include: 1. having the top adjusted (it sometimes needs a nudge when opening or a tug when closing, but the mechanicals work as they should); 2. the steering wheel ever so slightly off center when traveling in a straight line - had mechanic look into it last year, but I think he overcorrected it; 3. speakers work but they are pretty sad due to age; 4. there is a minor warp in the front spoiler the bugs me (no one else notices it, including the previous owner) so I would look into having that adjusted as well. The engine was fully re-sealed in September 2016 at about 72K miles and the clutch was done at that time as well.

Car is otherwise near perfect and a blast to drive. It is currently located in a covered garage in Williamsburg Brooklyn if anyone is interested in viewing it in person. Cold starts are drama and smoke free. One thing I did note in the listing is that the attached video seems to belong to a different car. I'll plan on being as active as possible in providing responses to questions.
