The Vincent Black Shadow debuted in 1948, advertised as the world’s fastest production motorcycle at the time, reaching an impressive top speed of 125 MPH. Produced between 1948 and 1955, less than 1,800 units were reportedly built in total. Each Black Shadow was meticulously handcrafted, most of which were Series C models which gained popularity for their sought-after twin-cylinder 998cc engine. Reported to have undergone a complete nut-and-bolt restoration, this Series C is said to have been purchased from a vintage motorcycle museum in 2018 and has since been kept as part of a private collection in Canada from which it is now being offered for auction.
The Vincent Black Shadow is distinguishable by the black coating on the engine and gearbox, along with its large 150-mph speedometer within Smith’s instrumentation. Gold-painted emblems and silver plaques can be found on each side along with gold pinstripes. Chrome accents complete the headlight bezel, fenders, exhaust outlet, taillight, and central gauge.
Power comes from a 998cc 50-degree V-twin engine, generating up to 45 HP to the rear wheel through a manual transmission. The Black Shadow engines were largely built with carefully selected parts from the Rapide and modified for tighter tolerances, improved airflow, and a 7:3:1 compression ratio. Series C bikes were also fitted with 1-1/8” Amal 289 carburetors, differentiated from the Rapide. For the Series C and later Black Shadows, the Brampton unit was replaced with a Vincent Girdraulic blade-type girder variation which used a hydraulic damper in place of a coil spring. The seller states this Vincent underwent a complete nut-and-bolt restoration, and the upper frame member, RFM, and engine are numbered #RC11717B, #F10AB/1B/9817, and #A44V respectively, as shown on the Vincent-HRD Owners Club Dating Certificate supplied in the gallery.

@Somer Restoration was done in California. Bike spent some time in Washington, and then eastern Canada. I can’t provide all the specifics, infos you are looking for. Small world. Information will surface if next custodian wants to complete the puzzle. But documentation that comes with the Bike is REALLY impressive. Including tool kit specific to the bike.
