An open-top driver’s car with a minimal lightweight design and a distinctive low-profile silhouette, the legendary Porsche 356A Speedster was launched in 1955 at the behest of American car importer Max Hoffman. This 1957 Porsche 356A 1600 Speedster benefits from a complete restoration carried out between 2021 and 2022 by Brant Parsons of Shamrock Racing. Presented in its original combination of Signal Red over Beige leather upholstery with optional Coupe seats, this 356A Speedster is now being offered for auction out of California accompanied by a numbers matching Kardex and Porsche Production Specifications Certificate.

Created using the steel body of the 356A Cabriolet stripped of its trimmings, the Speedster features a lower-raked windscreen and roll-up side curtains in favor of glass windows. This example was imported new by the Hoffman company factory-finished in Signal Red and has reportedly undergone a full restoration to its original specifications. Equipment includes factory sealed-beam headlights, U.S. market bumpers, dual chrome mirrors, 15” slotted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, and a tan convertible top with a matching tonneau cover and side curtains.

Replicating its original appearance, the cabin has been restored with new square weave carpeting and Beige leather upholstery covering the seats, upper dashboard, and door panels. The car was factory-equipped with optional Coupe seats and a set of matching Speedster seats is also included with the sale. Accessories include a white two-spoke steering wheel, a body-colored dashboard, black rubber floor mats, and analog VDO gauges.

Power comes from an original Type 616/1 1.6-liter flat-four engine that was reportedly rebuilt along with its numbers matching Type 644 4-speed manual gearbox during the restoration. The brakes, suspension, steering, and electrical systems were restored as well.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a set of Speedster seats, a Porsche Production Specifications Certificate, a Kardex, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This is a fantastic vehicle from the Shamrock Racing Collection.”

    @Rgxtreme I believe these were a period correct aftermarket exhaust. I’ve seen it a few times over years. It’s very easy to swap any original style exhaust you prefer

    @sbcarguy We just uploaded some pre restoration photos with number stampings and I just talked to owner. To his knowledge all metal is original and that is how it was presented when he purchased car pre-restoration.

    @workshop5001 - shouldn't the exhaust be the "through the bumper" type? also shouldn't the bumpers be the dual bars? or did that start in 58?

  • Workshop5001 (seller) 3 weeks, 2 daysago

    @sbcarguy as we didn’t restore the car I can’t tell you off top of my head, would have been a good question for earlier in auction. Regardless I will see what I can find out quickly. I have all the pics of pre restoration and it was very solid and presentable. This was never a dead rot box. It didn’t need structural repairs so it is like panels / chassis sections are all original

    @Workshop5001

    How many of the body panels still have their original numbers the car was born with?

    Thanks!

    @Whatever123 it is numbers matching, not sure why engine number wasn’t included in photo set.

  • Whatever123 (registered bidder) 3 weeks, 3 daysago

    Is engine original, I don't see any pictures of engine stamping? Thank you

  • Workshop5001 (seller) 3 weeks, 4 daysago

    Thank you everyone for interest in the speedster. It’s a fantastic car, all sorted and ready to enjoy. Plus the awesome bonus of original coupe seats and speedster seats!!! This car comes from the Stan Gold / Shamrock collection and Brant who rebuilt the car was working on 356 when they were new and has rebuilt many 4cam engines for shamrock. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.

    Beautiful restoration. I remember the floor mounted high beam / low beam switch from a few of my Dad's cars. Cool to see that in a '57 Speedster. GLWTA.
