1957 Porsche 356A Speedster Replica by Vintage Speedsters

Available for auction is this 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster Replica finished in GT Silver over a wine red Allante leather interior. Built by Vintage Speedsters of California in 2001 upon a 1960 Volkswagen chassis, this 356 replica was acquired by the current owner in 2014 having covered approximately 13k miles and has since received a freshly built 2110cc engine, new GT Silver paint, and an overhaul of the interior. Featuring a long list of premium parts and accessories, this Speedster replica is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with a reported 3k miles on the new engine and just over 26k miles overall.

The handcrafted fiberglass bodywork sits atop a 1960 Volkswagen chassis mated to a custom fabricated steel subframe. The exterior is finished in GT Silver with a black Haartz cloth top including matching side curtains and a tonneau cover. Other details include a rear luggage rack, Reutter badging, dual Aero style mirrors, and a set of grey powder-coated 10-slot steel wheels dressed in a set of Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The car is said to have been completely refinished following minor rear-end damage in 2021 by Vintage Motorcars of Hawaiian Gardens, including new rubber body seals, taillights, body trim, and lettering. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features wine red Allante upholstery on the seats, door cards, and dashboard as well as the lever boots and rear parcel shelf. German-made square weave carpeting lines the footwells and luggage compartment. Amenities include a wood-rimmed Derrington-style steering wheel with a Porsche crested horn button, dual-tone Hella horns, and a custom stereo system with a 500-watt JL Audio amplifier, 10” subwoofer, and 6 ½” Cerwin-Vega coaxial speakers.

Power comes from a custom-built 2110cc air-cooled flat-four equipped with Bosch style ignition, and dual Webber carburetors with Vintage Speed filters and linkages. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed manual Freeway Flyer transmission with a 3.88:1 final drive, heavy-duty side plate, and welded gears. The engine was built by Pat Downs and is said to produce up to 150 HP at 5600 rpm and 153 lb.-ft of torque between 4200 and 4600rpm. Other features include front disc brakes and a single exit A-1 sidewinder exhaust system. A comprehensive breakdown of the drivetrain components is provided below:

    Good buy... ;-)
Great car - I bought several from Troy - this one is definitely worth the money (and then some), but with import to Denmark, I'm not ready to go higher. ;-)
    Congrats!!

@Billw I don't have enough time to look at the date code but I've had them on the car for 4 years. They have plenty of tread depth, have never been driven in cold weather, and have no signs of cracking or other deformities.

@replicaspeedster.com how old are the tires?

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 1 monthago

@robertmcewen It also has Vredestein tires !

  • robertmcewen (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@Billw I would also like to add that after I acquired the car I added a sway bar in the front and a camber compensator in the rear. Those two improvements also really made a difference in the handling.

  • robertmcewen (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@Billw New rotors and pads were installed in the front and the pads and drums in the back were checked and found to be within spec. The front beam is greased as needed but the shocks have not been replaced under my ownership but the suspension is responsive and not spongy. These cars are so light in the front end that proper tire pressure helps a lot.

Has any maintenance been done on the brakes and suspension? With the car having 26k miles on it just wondering it’s all from the original build.

  • robertmcewen (registered bidder) 1 monthago

@wideridezzz I'm Robert and I'm the owner of the car and I'll be here in the last hour to help with any questions. Thank you for the question. I acquired the car originally from Troy. The car was well sorted and I didn't have to do anything to the car to enjoy it. The operative word there was "have". As with most everyone in the car hobby I wanted to make some improvements for myself. I eventually ran the original headlight wiring to a set of relays, one for low beam and one for high beam, and added heavier gauge wiring to a new set of H4 sockets with H4 bulbs which improved nighttime visibility.

And the oil filter canister you see is from an original 356 but it was converted for use as a crankcase breather for the 2L motor. The remote oil filter is in the left rear wheel fender.

@wideridezzz The car was totally repainted by Vintage Motorcars and while it was there Robert the owner (also on SOC) had Greg replace the flat style seats with new Speedster bucket style seats, new door card, dash and trim with Wine Allante. While it was there, he also had Greg replace the carpet in both the interior and trunk with Black German Square weave carpet. I wouldn't even call it a "refurbish" it was more of an update since the car was already in immaculate condition. There are zero problems with the wiring on this car and Robert did an upgrade to the headlights with relays that dramatically increased their brightness. This car is in immaculate condition and is as close as you can get to being a new car with a Pat Downs 2110cc engine. It will be in the lucky new owners garage in just a few days.

@replicaspeedster.com Did you do the refurbishing? Has the wiring been improved since the Vintage days of 'Butch'? (He was a 2000-2001 build initially)

Looks like a nice Vintage and with a well-detailed and built 2110. Maybe the serious bidders are awaiting the closing bell? Twenty-nine thousand dollars doesn't buy much in the replicar world these daze . . . Love the air cleaners and oil filter placement

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 1 monthago

@Billw I just spoke to Robert the owner and when Greg at Vintage Motorcars put in the new interior, he had to drill new holes for the seat rails because he was putting in the newer Speedster bucket seats with new seat rails. Those are just the old holes.

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 1 monthago

@Billw Yes, the bolts with the large washers are the seat belt bolts and the bolts with the smaller washers are the seat rail mount bolts. Thank you for the question.

  • Billw (registered bidder) 1 monthago

The picture of the floor pan shows bolts with washers. I’m trying see is that from the seatbelts or what is that holding? It looks to have some additional holes right next to the bolts.

@Bruce914 Thank you for the question Bruce. I'm Robert and I am the owner of the car and Troy is helping me with the sale. The damage to the rear was minor and when it was repaired the entire car was repainted. Any differences in shading in the photos is a result of lighting or shadows which is common with photographing metallic paint.

  • replicaspeedster.com (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Bruce914 Thanks for the question Bruce. Here's a link to a photo of the damage prior to it being taken to Greg at Vintage Motorcars of California for repairs, full paint, and a total interior upgrade including new square weave carpet. There was no damage to the pan or suspension. There are no differences in the color anywhere on the car and what you are seeing is just lighting differences in the photo. This car looks like a brand new car!

I see that we have a great Repo-Speedster here- with a Radio and a larger than a normal engine to drive these and enjoy them- I live in the Upper Mid-West and I'm hoping that the Speedster has a heater in it- I have had 6 Boxster that I drive with the top down- but they had a heater- Good Luck and thanks for your time-Rob

@dicksmith2436 The current build time from Vintage Motorcars is from 18 to 24 months and it's close to 3 years from Beck.
This car has a 4 speed transmission, which is what the vast majority of Speedster replicas have.

Thank you for stopping by our auction. This beautiful Speedster replica is owned by a friend of mine and I'm helping him sell it. He and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
PcarMarket did a great job in their write-up, but couldn't possibly include all the details about the car. Here's a link to all the details and pictures.
