Up for auction is this 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster replica by Intermeccanica. Reportedly one of the original 600 units hand-built by Intermeccanica in California, this Speedster was assembled in 1979 and had spent much of its life as part of a private collection in Illinois before being acquired by its current owner from a dealer in San Diego.  In recent years, the fiberglass body of this Speedster was removed from its original chassis and mounted on an upgraded tubular steel frame with an aluminum floor pan, independent front and rear suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a quick ratio rack and pinion steering system. Power comes from a turbocharged 1914cc VW Performance engine paired with a Rhino 4-speed manual transmission. With just over 10k miles driven since the completion of its major upgrade, this Intermeccanica 356A is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Oregon.

The high-quality fiberglass bodywork of this Speedster is finished in a white gel coat with a black convertible soft top. Originally built on a shortened Volkswagen Beetle chassis by Intermeccanica, this Speedster has more recently been upgraded to a custom full tubular steel frame with an aluminum floor pan at a cost of nearly $15k. Exterior details include gold badging, a replica Reutter coachwork tag on the passenger side fender, headlight grilles, removable side windscreens, chrome trim, and Outlaw badges on the decklid grille. A small area below the decklid is said to have been refinished and the seller reports the exterior to be in very good condition overall, detailed images are provided in the gallery. This Speedster rides on 15” widened steel wheels with chrome Porsche hubcaps and Pirelli P600 tires. An additional Carrera-style louvered rear decklid will also accompany the sale.

The interior is trimmed in black vinyl with fixed bucket seats, matching carpeting, and a painted dashboard accented by gold Carrera badging.  The footwells are lined with Coco floormats and the original banjo-style Intermeccanica steering wheel sits ahead of Porsche 914 instrumentation. Other features include an Outlaw shift knob, auxiliary gauges below the dash, and a Pioneer head unit with dual Kenwood speakers.  The turbo boost gauge below the dash is currently disconnected.

This Speedster is equipped with an air-cooled turbocharged 1914cc VW Performance flat-four engine with dual Dellorto carburetors, a 90-amp alternator, and a custom ceramic coated performance exhaust.  A claimed output of approximately 195 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a Rhino 4-speed manual transmission. The upgraded tubular chassis includes an independent front and rear A-arm suspension with coilovers, front and rear sway bars, 4-wheel disc brakes, and a quick-ratio rack and pinion steering setup.  The seller has personally serviced and tuned the car throughout their ownership and there are no outstanding maintenance items reported at this time.

This sale will include a Carrera-style decklid and a clean title.  With its classic styling, upgraded tubular steel chassis, and turbocharged air-cooled engine, this Speedster offers a very unique driving experience. Do not miss your chance to get behind the wheel.

@finnmx5 we do have a picture of the title on my phone , no problem sending it , but have to get authorization from auction or they have to upload it on there file ( will do tomorrow) morning for sure ! Only thing we have available in video is a short clip of myself leaving the house and returning later , if that would help we will also upload it ? Your concern is understandable but this is a very special car no tricks here !!

  • finnmx5 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Not trying to be a jerk but can you provide a copy of the title before this auction closes. It would relieve some anxiety about a car I bid on because it was in Oregon and now its in Texas.

  • finnmx5 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Can we see a live video of this car running?

How is it titled? Any pictures of the swap to the upgraded chassis? How about with the top up?

    Thanks, Joe in NH

  • Skindoc (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Looks like fun. Couple of questions.

Why is boost gauge disconnected and what boost are you running?

Do you have a weight for the car?

    Thanks and GLWA!
