The MG MGA was first introduced in 1955 with a newly designed chassis and a pontoon-styled body said to have been based on the MG TD Le Mans race car. This 1960 MG 1600 Mark 1 Roadster was said to have been acquired by the seller in 1995 and was the subject of a 7-year nut-and-bolt restoration that included a bare metal repaint in the factory color of Chariot Red, period-correct race car-style custom bodywork, a reupholstered interior in black leather with red piping, widened Dunlop steel wheels, and the installation of an MGB 1800cc five-bearing crankshaft four-cylinder engine. Having traveled just under 200 miles since the completion of the restoration and accompanied by a British Motor Heritage Industry Trust certificate, this 1960 MG MGA is now being offered at auction by its seller out of Washington.

The exterior is said to have been stripped down to bare metal during the restoration and repainted in the factory color of Chariot Red (RD.16). Equipment includes a “Sebring”-type front valance, a wire mesh front grille, polished Talbot-style mirrors, a chopped windscreen, a driver’s side Le Mans-inspired fairing with a headrest which is removed by a single knob, an aluminum passenger-side paint-matched tonneau cover, chrome rear bumperettes, and dual polished exhaust tips. The seller notes that the original windscreen and frame will be included in the sale. This MGA rides on 3” widened Dunlop steel wheels with red centers and MG center caps, which are mounted with new Federal Super Steel 657 tires.

The restored interior features two bucket seats upholstered in black leather with red piping, a black leather custom headrest with red piping, black door panels, black carpeting, and a refinished body-color dashboard. Amenities include a wood-rimmed Bluemel Beach lightweight three-spoke steering wheel, a Smiths heater, chrome-ringed Smiths instrumentation, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a radio blanking plate, and a rebuilt Jaeger speedometer/ odometer, which has been set to zero after the restoration.

The original engine has been replaced with a 1800cc five-bearing crankshaft four-cylinder engine which is said to have been sourced from an MGB, equipped with twin SU carburetors and factory rated at 95 HP and 110 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include an independent suspension with wishbones and coil springs at the front, a rigid axle with semi-elliptic springs at the rear, rack and pinion steering, front disc brakes, and rear drums.

This sale will include a clean title, a British Motor Heritage Industry Trust certificate, the original windscreen, frame, and extensive service records.

@BritishMechanic59 True. The twin cams were and are extremely rare and can bring 6 figure money quite easily. They are neat as heck.

  • BritishMechanic59 1 year, 7 monthsago

The Performance version of that engine would have been the "TWINCAM". I have worked on a few including Lyle Yorks 1957 Sebring car. At the time, I think it had about 4,500 original miles.

@996redturbo Thanks, the video has already been shot and submitted. I am no videographer but, I think they will answer your concerns. I would think it will show up sometime in the morning. The car is absolutely "turn key"

  • 996redturbo (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

Sorry for my prior typos! Rushing in preparation for Monday's agenda.

  • 996redturbo (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

Those cold start and driving videos of REAL INTEREST. But please, let it rev and run a bit. NO breezy puttering pass by at 30mph.
My purchasing interest is 100% focused is in retro pleasure seasonal driving. At 73YO, no interest in another view only item.
if you have not seen one ... watch a "R911" driving video on BAT. An icon of the proper driving video. No chatter or music, jut the car. Respectful, smooth, assured skill on display from hands to feet. Don't know R911's history, but he must have significant track history. Recent 427 Corvette video reflected both the beast car joys and also it's aged limits. Honest and nuanced, 100% professional presentation, which is rare.

    @worlddrivingchamp wow....THANKS !

@rickmilligan928 Paul Jaremko, former owner of Spokane car dealerships and renowned vintage racer in the Northwest agrees with Rick, and said it is the best MG he ever saw.
Jaremko was so impressed that he featured this MGA at his annual car show this summer by placing it front and center inside his museum/garage, right at the front door so every visitor saw it first upon entering.
It is truly spectacular. The custom wheels are 1 1/2 inches wider than stock MGA wheels, giving the car a three inch wider track than a factory MGA, and an aggressive stance on the pavement, crouching like a mini Shelby Cobra.
The outstanding, unique look of the car cannot be overstated.
With a brand new MGB motor, all the custom mods and growling aftermarket Monza dual exhaust it’s the most stunning MGA in the country.

Folks, I spent a few minutes this morning taking a couple of quick videos which I hope will be added soon by the good folks at Pcar. It truly is a turn the key and go car...

Beautiful, takes me back to my youth, my very first car was a 1957 MGA. GLWA

  • porscheklaus (seller) 1 year, 7 monthsago

@996redturbo Thanks so very much. I first saw the car about a month ago, didn't even know it existed. Strange thing about Spokane, there are some seriously good cars here that are rarely of ever seen, case in point !

The nanosecond I saw the car, I fell in live with it as well. It is just SO very right. The owner, a great guy who is as fastidious as it gets. His intent was to build his dream car, mission accomplished ! By the way the engine has been warmed over a bit, nothing radical but she runs strong and I'm sure she will for years to come.

The car was really well thought out. The drivers headrest removes with just one large and easily accessed knob, off in seconds leaving the trunk easily gotten to. The hand formed
alloy tonneau cover removes just as ingeniously with two quick release fittings. The front grill uprights were nicely replaced with wire mesh, the engines remote oil cooler located just behind. The exhaust is "throaty". delightfully so.

The soft top is in the car as well. It obviously will not attach to the cut down windscreen (tastefully done by the way) but, the original windscreen and frame are included in the sale.

There is nothing about this car that won't make you grin and I can absolutely assure the wining bidder that THIS car will be THE talk of the first show you enjoy driving her to. Expect a crowd.

    Happy bidding

Hopefully a driving video very soon.

Now this just grabs me by the youth flashbacks. A beautiful retro hoot on the right upcoming fall day.
First car a '61 TR3 for $850. Sold for college tuition.
This red bit of heaven is everything my flawless '19 Turbo S isn't. A 180 degrees back in time. 96hp more than enough for legal limits fun. What brakes? :)

Let's see where her price goes. Hope the best for "porscheklaus" as this lights up smiles for so many.
