The 1960 model year saw the introduction of Porsche’s new 356B model featuring redesigned T5 (Technical Programme V) bodywork and a range of 1600cc pushrod engines. This 1960 example is a Reutter-bodied 356B 1600 S Cabriolet that is said to have been cared for by the same owner in California from new up until 2014 when it was purchased by the seller. The car was restored in 2018 and has been driven sparingly during summers, accumulating under 3,500 miles over the seller’s 10-year stewardship. This classic 356B Cabriolet is now being offered for auction out of Maine.

Compared to earlier 356A models, the 356B featured new T5 bodywork characterized by the elevated level of its bumpers, fenders, and headlamps. This example wears Cabriolet bodywork by Reutter that was refinished in its factory Silver Metallic (6006) paint color during the restoration in 2018. Equipment includes a retractable blue convertible top, chrome trim and bumperettes, a polished driver’s side mirror, a lower valence with oval air intakes, an integrated bonnet handle, and factory 15” slotted steel wheels with chrome Porsche-crested hubcaps. Silver “Super 90” badging has been added to the rear. The seller notes that the car has been kept in a climate-controlled garage and the exterior remains in excellent overall condition. The original wheels are said to be included along with a removable hardtop. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin was reupholstered during the 2018 restoration in its factory specified Blue leather (F) with contrasting grey square weave carpeting. Accessories include front bucket seats with blue lap belts, a black three-spoke steering wheel, rubber floor mats, polished window cranks, and a body-colored dashboard with analog VDO instrumentation, a quartz clock, and a vintage-style Bluetooth radio. The seller states that the original Becker radio is also included in the sale.

This 1600 S Cabriolet came factory-equipped with a 1,600cc flat-four engine featuring dual Zenith carburetors. Up to 75 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transaxle. The seller indicates routine maintenance has been carried out as needed including replacements of the front and rear shock absorbers, various gaskets, and oil changes.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, a removable hardtop, original wheels, the original Becker radio, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I am the second owner of this Porsche 356B 1600S Cabriolet with its original hardtop. The car spent the bulk of its life in CA. As the second caretaker of this car, I restored the exterior paint and interior to factory original in 2018. It has been lightly driven and enjoyed during the summers and lovingly maintained throughout my ownership. I have the Certificate of Authenticity showing it was built on April 13th, 1960.  This car is flawless and in excellent condition.”

@Somer I agree, no reserve auctions do get a lot more attention and yields higher bids, they're double edge swords.

@quantumorbit Reserves are important but then sometimes people will bid more if they know the last bidder will own it.

@Raforst the engine is a period correct Super 90 engine. I don't believe it to be the original engine.

  • Raforst (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 5 daysago

Is the car numbers matching? The certificate of authenticity seem to have a different engine number versus what is stamped on the block from what I could tell. Please validate.

    Engine number?

  • Jet2jeff2 (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 5 daysago

Thank you. Do you have shots of the underside?

  • RCain (seller) 2 weeks, 5 daysago

I don't believe its the original engine. it's a Super 90 engine that is period correct. I will post a picture of the hardtop. I had that repainted when the car was done. the headliner is original and needs updating, seals on the hardtop need replacing. Ive never used the hardtop on the car.

@Epicmc I will load the picture up to the sight. No major work done to the engine or transmission during my ownership nor am I aware of any done during the life of the original owner. Both are in excellent condition. The work I've had done is listed below. Happy to connect you to the Porsche tech that has done all the work on the car..

Cleaned and checked all starter leads and grounds
    replaced right heater hose
replaced low beam on reverse light
    replaced shocks
replaced boot on end of transmission
    replaced base gasket

I had all the service work copies done since 1960 but cant find the file at this time. All normal service checks done annually.
