We are pleased to present this beautifully restored 1960 Porsche 356 B Roadster by Drauz, finished in Royal Blue over grey leather.  Launched for the 1960 model year based on the redesigned T5 platform, the 356 Roadster was built as the successor to the one-year-only Convertible D model with revised coachwork crafted by Drauz in Heilbronn.  Reported to be one of only 560 T5 Roadsters built for 1960, this 356 B underwent a painstaking year-long bare-metal restoration by Dave Imes of Apex Classique in Colorado, at a cost of over $200k about 3 years ago.  Presented in superb concours condition while featuring an upgraded 1720cc flat-four engine, this highly collectible 356 B Roadster is now being offered by its seller in Colorado with approximately 250 miles driven since the restoration.

This Roadster was completely disassembled, taken down to the bare metal, and treated to a concours-level respray in its factory original color of Royal Blue.  New exterior trim was sourced from Stoddard, the Cabriolet top was replaced, and new front and rear decklids were installed.  The original floor pans are said to remain intact and the paint is said to be in absolutely pristine condition (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  The Drauz Roadster exhibits some subtle differences compared with the standard 356 B Cabriolet including its roll-up glass side windows and taller windshield.  Front fog lights were added during the restoration and a set of authentic ventilated steel wheels with chrome hubcaps were refinished and mounted with period-correct Vredestein tires.  A new custom-made tonneau cover will also accompany the sale.

The cabin was meticulously hand-restored with new grey leather upholstery by Auto Weave in Colorado.  The seats were rebuilt and a correct T5 steering wheel was installed along with new trim components and reproduction gauges from Stoddard.  The seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly, and the 5-digit odometer currently displays just over 250 miles, reflecting the distance traveled since the completion of the restoration.

The original 1600 flat-four engine in this 356 was completely rebuilt and upgraded to a 1720cc displacement with bored cylinders and JE pistons.  The number’s matching 716 4-speed manual gearbox has been rebuilt along with suspension and steering systems, and the brakes were also sent to Martin Willis at the Machine Shop in Colorado to be rebuilt and fitted with new lines, hoses, and a master cylinder.  The engine break-in oil has been changed since the restoration and this 356 is said to be in like-new mechanical order.

This sale will be accompanied by a set of 2 keys, a jack, spare tire, a new custom tonneau cover, and a clean title.  This sought-after 356 B Roadster has been painstakingly restored to exceptional factory standards; if you’re an early-era Porsche enthusiast, this 1960 example is not to be overlooked.

Thanks for bidding folks! So bummed about the rust comment from Ferry. My fault though, as I can understand how The original photo may have been interpreted.

I want to take the folks at PCarMarket. They were a pleasure to deal with.

@Ferry please see new comment and uploaded photo. Absolutely not rust!! Only scuffed undercoating with perfect metal underneath!!

  • Jrothma (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Jrothma please see new comment. Absolutely not rust! Just scuffed undercoating.

  • Jrothma (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

    Hey folks,
Great news! I drove up to the car to examine what looked like rust holes.

They are absolutely not! Only a shiny spot on perfectly solid sheet metal. You can see that the sunder coating has been rubbed away leaving shiny paint underneath! The owner has the car on a lift. I suspect it rubbed very very slightly and scuffed the undercoating.

    Photo just uploaded.

@Ferry I apologize for my oversight. I didn't even see that when I took the photos. I'm embarrassed that I missed it. Please rest assured, the car is beautifully done. Shop has agreed to repair that floor to a standard commensurate with the rest of the car.

Please bid with confidence. I'm happy to take additional photo/video or answer any questions this morning. I live in Colorado Springs. Driving to the car in Denver very shortly. Please pm if you'd even like a personal FaceTime tour of the car.

I know that the next owner will fall in love with it as I have! Wish I had space and budget to buy for myself!

    CheeRS!
    Joe

I'll be at the car in about 90 minutes.

  • Ferry (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Jrothma Thanks for your replay. It makes me suspicious, what a quality restauration was that, if after 3 years rust and holes like this apears. Or did you drove her on salty roads? How ever, to repair this issue with " patches" is deffinetly not the right way.

  • Jrothma (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Ferry oh my gosh! Good eye, and that appears to be new since the restoration.

Owner and shop have agreed to repair. (Removing any rusted portion, building a patch, and re-undercoating) for the successful buyer.

  • Ferry (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Hi Seller. Is it correct, what we see on picture 112 / 113, are rusted holes in the surface? Are anywhere else more like this? Thanks

  • Jrothma (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

    @dr07845 Hello,
That photo looks to me like the door was slightly open when I took the photo. Working on getting another photo to confirm. If you zoom-in on the full side photo, the gap doesn't look like that.

  • Jrothma (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

    @FLA Hello,
As mentioned in an earlier response. We have, in hand a Porsche Classic Certificate confirming original spec and matching numbers. I have submitted photos to PCMarket and will submit some better ones right now.

For those who may not know....Porsche no longer issues any Certificate of Authenticity. The only way to get the official "blessing" of original spec and numbers is to physically bring the car to a Porsche Classic Center where they do a mechanical inspection and document engine and transmission numbers. They then submit those to Porsche and Porsche confirms (or not) that units are original to car.

We had this done in July. Hopefully the photos will be up shortly.

    Thanks for your question.

    Joe

Hello, maybe I missed details, but any chance you can post some pics showing the engine # / chassis # / Trans #... On top a kardex is easy and quick to get which could confirm as well paint code / options... I'm interested in the car but (with all due respect ;) ) except you saying it's a (royal blue) matching # car, nothing really confirms it... Thank you

  • dr07845 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Picture 44 shows a door gap that shows a lack of attention to detail of a quality restoration.
Also top clasps on windshield should be Phillips onpicture 68
Beautiful car but I would think for $200,000, there should more attention to originality and detail.

@kecho I have submitted photos of the Porsche Classic Certificate to PCM. Hopefully, they will post. As you may know, Porschw no longer issues COA's. The only way to confirm authenticity is to bring the car to a Porsche Classic dealership where the car is inspected and engine/transmission numbers submitted to PAG for confirmation. This costs a little over $500 to have done. Ours was done this summer (photos in dealer service lane were done at same time). The Porsche Classic Certificate includes photos on engine/transmission numbers and confirmed both were original to the car.

  • kecho (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Can you please post a close up photo of the engine number and perhaps (if you have one) the COA or Kardex for the car to verify numbers?

  • 550bryan (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

If a spilt case engine doesn't leave any spots, it's out of oil.

  • Rick979 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

    Wow!

Also, I know it's Christmas, and the auction just went up. Wanted to clarify that we do NOT have a tool-kit. The auction says that one is included.

I see that Suncoast has authentic-looking 356 kits for $430.

  • Jrothma (seller) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@geb217 yes, I took that photo of the drip tray to show that it does "mark its territory". That's the pan that's been under the car for months and months.

  • geb217 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@jrothma Certainly a beauty - really deserves a walk around, running video. Great photos, can you shed some light on the fluids showing in the drip tray??
    Thanks

Greetings from Colorado! My name is Joe and I'm representing the seller of this beautiful car! I'm personally a 25+ year Porsche owner and PCA member. The car was restored by a good friend who sold it to the current owner the moment the restoration was complete.

One thing not shown in the photos: Prior to listing, I brought the car to our local Porsche Classic Dealership (Colorado Springs) abs obtained a porsche Classic Certificate. This inspection/certificate confirms engine and motor are original to the car.

Please feel free to ask questions. I'll do my best to answer immediately, or find answers.

    Happy Holidays and bidding!

    Joe
