Available for auction is this 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe finished in Champagne Yellow over a tan leatherette interior. For the 1964 model year, Porsche introduced the final iteration of their 356, featuring four-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment. This example was acquired by the seller in 2015 and has since been treated to regular service including a new clutch, windshield, brake pads and fluid, and more. Accompanied by a Porsche Production Specifications Certificate, this 356C is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Washington.

This 356 was originally finished in Slate Grey and was refinished in its current shade of Champagne Yellow under previous ownership. The seller notes the finish is older and shows signs of wear, and notes that the battery tray shows evidence of repairs and some corrosion. Both doors received new skins and were refinished in 2016 and the windshield was replaced in 2019. Additional images can be found in the gallery. Accessories include Hella headlights, a twin-grille engine lid, body-color bumpers with chrome overriders, a single driver-side mirror, and 15” chrome wheels with polished hubcaps and Federal Super Steel 657 tires.

The cabin was reupholstered in tan leatherette under previous ownership. The door panels and upper dashboard are trimmed to match, and the floors are lined with tan carpeting. The seller notes that the cabin remains in great overall condition, aside from some wear on one of the seat bolsters. Features include a three-spoke steering wheel, bucket seats with lap belts, hand crank windows, and a suite of VDO instrumentation. The seller notes that the fuel gauge can be sporadic and the analog clock is not currently working.

Power comes from a 1,600cc air-cooled flat-four engine. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed manual transaxle. Service under current ownership is said to include a new clutch, spark plug wires, and fuel hoses in 2017, valve cover gasket in 2019, and brake pads, fluid, and an oil and filter service in 2022.

This sale will include a Porsche Production Specifications Certificate and clean title.

It could be the camera angle, but it looks like the front bumper is lower on the driver side than the passenger side. Is/was there some damage in that area?

@Carsbringhappiness I'll chime in as well.. as the corrosion is primarily on the battery box area, which can be replaced fairly easily with a kit form Stoddard or Pelican.. I did upload some more detailed photos of the underside to view as well. As the owner said, he opted to keep as is and work on other areas of the car.. to improve the driving experience and did not have the underside coated as to not hide anything from a new potential owner. The car is not perfect as it's almost 60 years old.. but as I've said, it's a wonderful survivor and driver. .. along with matching number flat-four and transmission.

  • Carsbringhappiness (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

Can any 356 expert comment on the rust levels for this car?
The front trunk, seems to have a fair amount of corrosion, but likely surface only. Concerned about structural rust, mainly as the car seems to have spent time in a tough environment while in Alaska…

A note from the current owner.. which helps creates part of the story of this 356.

"I had been volunteering at a Porsche shop in Seattle while working as a nurse at a local hospital and fell in love with the 356. I became more involved with local Porsche 356 community and through a good friend heard about a car in Oregon that was owned by a fisherman. I went to visit the car and it was a beautiful Champaign yellow and had been stored in his barn. He had purchased the car from his brother in California many years earlier. The car got the name Homer because the owner had the car in Homer Alaska for a while to drive while commercial fishing.

We purchased the car and immediately drove it down to the local tire shop for new rubber before driving it back up to Seattle. It was amazing. These cars drive so smoothly and the engine and gear shifter are so in sync that you feel as if you glide down the road.

The car was then serviced with the goal being to serve as my daily driver. This was done by Akers Porsche and Squires Porsche. The work was impeccable and I drove this car as my daily driver while in graduate school without any concerns outside of regular maintenance.

Note that we elected to not put new undercoating on the car prior to sale to give a honest representation of the pans for the next owner. It may not look as shiny, but can certainly give good piece of mind."

@Trendano3 appreciate the questions.. I'm not aware that this tach was ever changed.. I have see some other '64 C's with a 5200 tach though.. Fan shroud - sorry, I don't have a record or invoice that indicates this. What we do know is it is a matching number engine and transmission. The battery box area is showing corrosion in a few spots.. good news is Porsche shops do sell a replacement, so easy to source. The condition certainly does not hinder this wonderful driver.. meaning, one could keep just as is and enjoy or decide to carry out further refurbishments. As I mentioned to someone else, it's 59 years old!

I'll post a paragraph from the current owner after this reply which he talks about where this 356 has been.

  • PinotDino (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

.. thanks for the questions @Wildcat77 - Im not aware of any water leaks as it's been garage kept.. being 59 years old and maintained.. .it will seep a tiny bit.. but holds all the fluids as it should. It's a very strong running and driving 356.

Nice looking driver! A few more questions if you would:
    * condition of the frame (pics if you can)
    * any leaks?
    * anything not working (aside from what’s noted)?
    Thanks

  • trendano3 1 year, 2 monthsago

Three questions: C" Tachometers redline at 5000. This looks like 5200. is this an electric Tach from a 65C? The fan shroud on C" engines are light dove grey/white color, this one is black which I believe was on the SC engines. Can you clarify? prior to 2015, what is the history of where the car has been located. Have some concerns about surface rust. Thanks, Looks like a nice driver.

@Goodwood thank you for the questions.. yes, I will be uploading videos of cold start, walk around and drive.. coming soon!

Reflectors - from what we understand, these are US spec reflectors and original as are the rear turn signals. If you have a source that specifically says they are Euro I'd love to see!

  • Goodwood (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@PinotDino that appears to be an ad for the PCA region with one second flash of the car. I was of the impression that it was a walk around showing details or something . When are you adding that video information?
Also, the rear turn signal reflectors are from a European edition car, are they original?

  • PinotDino (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@leedlast this coupe was originally delivered new in Slate Grey (color code 6401) and black leatherette.. both exterior and interior were redone by previous owner..

  • leedlast (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

In 1964, Champagne Yellow was offered with only two interior colors: Black or Green.

  • PinotDino (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@DrDemento thanks for the questions.. I'll add the answers to those below.

A few questions - will think of some more....
    1) what is the condition of the rubber (side & rear windows)? - I assume windshield rubber is relatively new due to the glass replacement. *yes, rubber is in great condition
    2) same question for door weather seals. *seals are also in good condition, no areas are loose or peeling off. These with windows seals (aside from front) would have been new with respray to champagne color under pervious ownership.
    3) Karmann or Reuter body? * It is a Karmann body.. please see photos #198 on Porsche Certificate .
    4) Is the car missing its "C" emblem? *This 356 does not have the C, which goes back to the previous owner and how it's been with current.
    5) the crest on the wheel covers is 3-color, indicating an "SC". Were these covers on the car when you purchased it? *These where the wheels on car when purchased by current owner.
    6) Can you confirm the Porsche VIN? I read: "218521" *yes, that is the vin - photos #198 on the Porsche Certificate also shows.

Note: the video just added above, PCA/PNWR Friends of the Rain, is a lovely video showing the passion of the PCA and Porsche enthusiast.. and opens with this exact '64 356C.. the owners are huge supporters of the PCA and all things Porsche!

  • PinotDino (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

..here we go.. I'll be here for the entire auction to answer any questions about this wonderful 356.. please feel free to message me directly as well from the contact seller button up top. This coupe is a ideal survivor and driver.. with just the right amount of light patina.. it will creates conversation at the pump, drives beautifully through country roads and ready for a road trip.. it is has been tuned for driving (by Akers Porsche) while retaining the original, matching numbers engine and transmission.
