DT: 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Custom

Available for auction is this 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe finished in Orange over a black interior. Styled in Italy by Carrozzeria Ghia with bodywork hand-built in Germany by Karmann, the Karmann Ghia was offered as Volkswagen’s premier sports car and is regarded among the most beautiful automotive designs of its era. This 1964 example is said to have undergone a full frame-off restoration and features custom metallic paintwork, four-wheel disc brakes, a front stabilizer bar, a reupholstered interior, and an upgraded dual-carbureted engine. This one-of-a-kind Karmann Ghia is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio.

The butt-welded, hand-shaped, and smoothed steel body is finished in a custom metallic shade of orange and features black powder-coated aftermarket bumpers, chrome trim, and black-painted window moldings. Other features include new window seals, LED headlights, and 15" EMPI BRM Speedwell alloy wheels dressed in a set of Nankang tires.  Additional photos are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been reupholstered and fitted with a pair of bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl along with new grey carpeting, a new headliner, body-colored dashboard, and new door panels with grey cloth inserts to match the rear seats.  Other features include silver lap belts, a MOMO steering wheel, CB Performance accelerator pedal, a modern Alpine radio, and custom enclosures mounted in the footwells housing Kicker subwoofers and auxiliary gauges for battery voltage and oil temperature on the driver’s side.  The seller notes that the clock is currently nonfunctional.

Power comes from an enlarged air-cooled flat-four engine featuring dual-carburetors, anodized fittings, a remote oil filter, and CNC-machined MST pulleys in red anodized aluminum.  The engine has also been fitted with a custom high-flow exhaust system and Tri-Mil muffler.  The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual gearbox while stopping power comes from upgraded disc brakes.  A stabilizer bar has also been added to the front suspension.  Items carried out during the restoration are said to include new fuel lines, shock absorbers, a new fuel tank, and a new wiring harness.  An oil change has been recently carried out in preparation for sale.

This sale will include a clean title.  Benefitting from an extensive restoration effort, this tastefully modified 1964 example presents a great opportunity to own Volkswagen’s iconic Karmann Ghia sports car.

@LuxuryAutomax we say Frame off restoration as that is the commonly used term. This car has over 20 bolts that hold the floor pan to the body and those were removed in this case for a high quality restoration. If you prefer the term “Pan Off” we can call it that. Thanks for your approval of the car it really is a good one!

@DrT we got very little documentation from the previous owner in any specs for the engine. We took it to our mechanic who works on all of our VW’s (we have over 40 in inventory) prior to sale. He classified it as a mild performance build with a 1700-1800cc motor. It has dual Dellorto 36 carbs and an electronic ignition. I will try to get get some additional details from him on the heads, cam, and gearing.

  • CCCltd (seller) 4 days, 9 hoursago

@airkewldfan yes I’m sorry I didn’t realize what DrT was referring to in his last comment my mistake. The wires with the blue ends have been reconnected and the horn is working properly. Our mechanic took care of this for us last week. I will upload a few photos of the nose so you can see what was done. It is now in good working order. Thanks for the clarification. - John

Sweet ride!! @DrT The wires in the spare tire area with the blue ends are most likely supposed to go to the horns. Seller- Have you tested the horn?

  • CCCltd (seller) 5 days, 7 hoursago

@DrT That plastic line connects to the spare tire and creates the pressure that pushes the washer fluid into the line. This car has aftermarket wheels which do not fit in the stock spare tire location so it is not attached for that reason.

@greenerwg I do not have much detail about the restoration on the car from the previous owner. We have looked it over and it is a very solid build. The fenders, floor pans, rockers and nose are all in very good condition.

  • DrT (registered bidder) 5 days, 8 hoursago

What are the disconnected wires in the nose supposed to be connected to?

  • greenerwg (registered bidder) 6 days, 1 hourago

    any documentation of the resto?
