Available for auction is this 1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe finished in Orange over a black interior. Styled in Italy by Carrozzeria Ghia with bodywork hand-built in Germany by Karmann, the Karmann Ghia was offered as Volkswagen’s premier sports car and is regarded among the most beautiful automotive designs of its era. This 1964 example is said to have undergone a full frame-off restoration and features custom metallic paintwork, four-wheel disc brakes, a front stabilizer bar, a reupholstered interior, and an upgraded dual-carbureted engine. This one-of-a-kind Karmann Ghia is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio.
The butt-welded, hand-shaped, and smoothed steel body is finished in a custom metallic shade of orange and features black powder-coated aftermarket bumpers, chrome trim, and black-painted window moldings. Other features include new window seals, LED headlights, and 15" EMPI BRM Speedwell alloy wheels dressed in a set of Nankang tires. Additional photos are provided in the gallery.
The cabin has been reupholstered and fitted with a pair of bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl along with new grey carpeting, a new headliner, body-colored dashboard, and new door panels with grey cloth inserts to match the rear seats. Other features include silver lap belts, a MOMO steering wheel, CB Performance accelerator pedal, a modern Alpine radio, and custom enclosures mounted in the footwells housing Kicker subwoofers and auxiliary gauges for battery voltage and oil temperature on the driver’s side. The seller notes that the clock is currently nonfunctional.
Power comes from an enlarged air-cooled flat-four engine featuring dual-carburetors, anodized fittings, a remote oil filter, and CNC-machined MST pulleys in red anodized aluminum. The engine has also been fitted with a custom high-flow exhaust system and Tri-Mil muffler. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual gearbox while stopping power comes from upgraded disc brakes. A stabilizer bar has also been added to the front suspension. Items carried out during the restoration are said to include new fuel lines, shock absorbers, a new fuel tank, and a new wiring harness. An oil change has been recently carried out in preparation for sale.
This sale will include a clean title. Benefitting from an extensive restoration effort, this tastefully modified 1964 example presents a great opportunity to own Volkswagen’s iconic Karmann Ghia sports car.
