RIDR and PCARMARKET are proud to present an extremely rare piece of Mercedes-Benz history, a 1967 230SL "Pagoda", one of only 185 examples produced for the model year. The 230 SL was the first model to be offered as part of the W113 series and became a highly sought-after option between its successors the 250SL and 280SL. Finished in Light Red over a Parchment interior, this 1967 example has been under the care of three owners over the course of its life. It comes equipped with a rare 4-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, a Blaupunkt radio, and a matching removable hardtop. Among the most collectible W113s of all, this final-year 230SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

The W113 SL is colloquially known as the “Pagoda” for its unique hardtop roofline. This example is said to retain its factory Light Red (519) paint color and comes equipped with a retractable tan soft top as well as a removable painted hardtop. Other details include a driver’s side mirror, chrome bumpers, polished dual exhaust outlets, and a set of 14” steel wheels with body-colored hubcaps and Venezia Classic 787 whitewall tires. A new roof rack is also said to be included.

The cabin is upholstered in Parchment leather with matching carpets, door panels, and a body-colored dashboard. Amenities include air conditioning, a VDO analog clock and instrumentation, a locking glove box, and a Blaupunkt radio. The seller confirms that all accessories remain functional

Power comes from an M127 2.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed manual transmission. The W113 is based upon a shortened version of the W111 platform and features recirculating ball steering, double-wishbone front suspension, and a dual-circuit brake system with front discs and power-assisted rear drums. The seller reports routine maintenance has been carried out under current ownership, and adds that a major service was completed including a new fuel tank and pump at a cost of approximately $4k.

This sale will include owner’s literature, a spare wheel and tire, and a clean title.

@CurtGT3RS the original white strap will come with the car

  • RIDRGROUP (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

@CurtGT3RS we had a 3 ply coolant hose installed to the radiator, never any issues starting. It was recommended a few years ago as it is one of the common issues. Never really experienced any starter issues before the 3 ply coolant hose install, but certainly no starting issues since then.

Also - isn’t there supposed to be a fabric strap attached to the front of the hood and drivers side front fender? Was this car in an accident and that was left off during the repair?

When the car is fully up to temperature, are there any starting issues?

@Legendary hello, thank you for bringing attention to this. Please find this similar car, VIN
113.042.12.019462 advertised as 1/185 produced for 1967 model year sold through RM Sothebys in October ‘21. Based on the calculations and VIN info you provided, the car Sold by RM Sothebys above would not be considered 1/185 produced but is advertised and sold as such, through a reputable source like RM.

The car was sold to our family from the second owner who is a long time and major enthusiast of classic Mercedes models. He had informed that the 1/185 refers only to the 230 SL from this year that came with every factory option, as this one has. The Frigiking air conditioning system, the Blaupunkt radio, Euro style bubble headlights, and factory chrome trim make this particular car very special among others.

I believe that the description of this car being one of the last 185 230SL cars made is incorrect. This cars vin number of 19029 puts it at a build date likely in November of 1966. Since the vin number of the last 230SL made is 19832, there were 802 230SL cars built after this one. Am I correct?
