We are pleased to present this 1970 Porsche 914-6 for auction. With a recent $23k mechanical overhaul, this 5-speed coupe stands ready to be enjoyed by a discerning air-cooled enthusiast. Being a 914-6 model, this car is highly favored for its larger 6-cylinder engine (derived from the flagship 911), that offers an uncompromising visceral driving experience. Standing proud with a low production number, this 914-6 represents one of the more desirable vintage Porsches to own.
Retaining its factory color of White, this 914 provides an eye-catching patina that greatly coincides with its simplistic design. All complimentary exterior components show to be in excellent condition including the targa roof, fog lights, rubber seals, grommets, and brightwork. This example rides on a set of iconic Deep Six 15” Fuchs wheels that come wrapped in Dunlop DZ tires dated from 2005 with plenty of tread-life remaining.
This 914-6 features a factory correct black basket weave vinyl interior that shows only minor wear with a few cracks on the dashboard. All electronics and accessories are said to be in working order aside from the aftermarket Sony head unit. The seller notes that an upgraded steering wheel has been installed.
Launched alongside the 4-cylinder version, this 914-6 was equipped with a larger 2.0L flat-six engine derived straight from the 911 model. The 914-6 is further distinguished by its use of five lug hubs, larger brakes, and an ignition switch properly located on the left side of the steering wheel. Approximately 125HP and 131 lb-ft of torque is delivered to the rear wheels via a numbers matching 5-speed manual gearbox making for a truly enjoyable driving experience. The seller states that over $23k was recently spent on mechanical work, bringing this 914 to top-level running condition with less than 1k miles driven since. I think that economic uncertainty will always shift the market to some extent. During my last round at BaT on March 10 my Porsches got corana'd and did not sell. I have since sold one of those (993 cab) at a fair price. The collector grade ROW 3.0 Carrera is still for sale. But, as we have progressed through this shutdown the buyers have come back out. Just check the sell through rates here and on BaT. Out side of our Porsche inventory we have gotten some very good pricing on a '67 big block Vette and on some BMW's and even American muscle. In the case of the current uncertainty there is unprecedented economic suffering but not so much for the people who are and have been in the market for old Porsches. I am certainly not seeing a plethora of bargains to snap up in the open private market.
This car and all 914-6's still have a lot going for them, simply because there were so few of them made. Unlike where the Halo model drags up the lesser ones in a rising market, the rise in interest in the base 914's have served to push up the Halo 914-6. Now having owned and lived with both models anyone who has tasted a 914-4 who has the resources should be hungering for a 914-6.

@Luft Yes, in a perfect world it would be great to have pics of before and after among a handful other pieces of missing provenance but unfortunately the two previous owners with direct knowledge of the work done to this car have passed away. There is the $2700 receipt for remediation done with all metal while the motor and xaxle were out of the car.

@Nybuilder Yes, I must admit I overlooked that detail. The previous owner has a long history of 914 ownership and this is what the widow provided. My focus was on the physical tags and stampings and researching those for correct model and date compliance. We are confident representing this car to have all of its original drivetrain.

Yes, this car has its original drive train. Unfortunately COA's are notoriously incomplete on the 914 range and unlike the contemporary 911's they were not supported by a Kardex system. The serial numbers for the chassis, 2.0 engine and transaxle are all in the correct date range supporting our assertion that it is indeed, numbers matching. This is a genuine 914-6.
All of the relevant stampings and tags are contained in the gallery. Do your research and you will reach the same conclusion.
This example was acquired from the estate of an eclectic car collector with a long history of 914-6 ownership intervals. This one he bought in 2018 from an ailing friend who had commissioned a complete mechanical overhaul of the motor and transmission, steering, brakes and suspension (2018). While the motor was out, previous hell hole and battery tray patches were removed and repaired correctly using all metal panels. All told, close to $35,000 was spent. Before paintwork was initiated the owner died.
This car is dialed in mechanically. Every feature with the exception of the old stereo head unit operates correctly. The car is presentable but the paint has plenty of flaws. After a thorough inspection there is no concerning corrosion and certainly no rot anywhere on the car. The interior is complete but the seats have a few open seams at the top. The roof fits well.
We thought we might take it to the next level but since the day we got it all we want to do is drive it! We have owned and passed along dozens of air cooled Porsches over the last five years including our share of 911 outlaw hot rods and a 930 Turbo. For me at least, I have to admit that this is bar none, the funnest of them all. The extra torque that flat six endows to this chassis is transformative. This car will scoot and its handling is confidence inspiring. The Deep Six Fuchs make their presence known compared to the smaller sets we have had on our 914's. The stance of this car gives it an aggressive presence; maybe its the color. But its the sound this motor makes under heavy foot that will put a permanent grin on your face. I laugh out loud just thinking about it!!
We love this car just the way it is. So don't be surprised if you buy it with the same intentions we did but you keep finding excuses NOT to send it away to the paint shop.

I note that the ad states a numbers matching 5-speed but does not said that the engine is number matching, so has the engine been replaced and if so, is the original case available? Is the installed engine a 2.0L or has it been updated with a larger engine?
