Having been in production for more than six decades, the original Volkswagen Beetle boasts unique styling and has earned acclaim as one of the most culturally influential cars in history. The 1970 model year brought about significant changes for the U.S. market Beetle, including a more powerful 1,585cc engine. Acquired by the seller approximately 10 years ago, this 1970 example underwent a full cosmetic restoration which saw a complete refinish in tan over matching upholstery. This classic VW Beetle is now being offered for auction out of California.

This Beetle was sanded by hand and refinished in tan upon the seller’s acquisition approximately 10 years ago. Chrome brightwork spans the bumpers, moldings, running boards, antenna, driver-side mirror, headlight & turn signal bezels, windshield wipers, and door handles. It rides on polished 15” steel wheels dressed in Nexen SB-802 tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been reupholstered with tan leatherette which spans the seats and door panels. A matching headliner is fitted above, while the contrasting black dashboard and steering wheel are accented with a chrome-trimmed speedometer. Equipment includes a passenger-side grab handle, a locking glovebox, roll-up windows, and door-mounted storage pockets. The seller notes minor wear on the e-brake handle.

Beneath the hood lies a 1.6-liter (1,585cc) flat-four engine and single-barrel carburetor. As much as 57 HP and 82 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller confirms there are currently no outstanding maintenance items and adds that a host of service documentation will accompany the sale.

This sale will include a clean title, three keys, a spare tire, and service documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “This car drives phenomenally.  Looks & Sounds Great!  I took great care & pride in my restoration work & this car really is ready to put a smile on its next owner's face.  I have owned it for about 10 years & it was my therapy project through my divorce.  It kept my hands & mind occupied & has been a true labor of love.  I keep it in my climate-controlled garage next to my Rolls Royce, Porsche, E55 AMG & SL500 in Rancho Santa Fe, California.”

With all the work, it’s a nice car. If it had a bigger dual carb motor, or an EV drivetrain it would have gone a lot higher.

Has engine work been done (eg rebuild)?

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@ElisMotorcars @deejayclapton : thank you for your quick response.

  • ElisMotorcars (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

    *with - not what’s.

  • ElisMotorcars (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@richjs43 fired on first crank. I may have held the key one crank longer than I should have anticipating 2-3 cranks. No issue what’s firing. Yes - an obvious puff of smoke upon start up. I wish @pcarmarket would post the driving videos I uploaded yesterday. The car runs clean and smooth.

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@deejayclapton: in viewing the cold start video,,it appeared that engine had a difficult time starting and had a rough idle. Please comment. Thanks

  • Peabo (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@deejayclapton I'm on my 5th Porsche and the 87 is the one I miss

  • jjeffries (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

What a beauty. Nice workmanship. Likely a good investment, too.

I had a 74 flat windshield. My Dad bought my Mum a 79 Super Beetle cabriolet. Like Alfa’s (and 911’s) cars everyone should own at least once.

What model Porsche do u have? I own a few. I bought a ‘72 Beetle new back in the day, Green /Tan. Wish I kept it. Love the air/oil cooled engines. This car should do well!

@Alvir21852 Do not have full history from new. 90% of what accompanies the car documentation wise is shown.

  • Alvir21852 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Do u have total history since new? Yeah I agree the rear appears to be a little higher than stock. Maybe from the shocks or torsion bars? Beautiful paint job, looks brand new!

  • Peabo (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Thank you for the reply. nonstick is meant to be nonstock. The electronic editor autocorrected to nonstick - like a frypan.

  • ElisMotorcars (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

The seats were installed brand new. The transmission is stock as far as I know. The back is not raised and the front is not lowered. I’m not sure what “nonstick” means.

I repainted it as close to the original color as possible. The car as far as I know was always garaged. So when I sanded and primed it by hand rust was not an issue for me.

  • Peabo (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Beautiful car. Please tell us about the seats - are they new seats or a fancy upholstery kit. Stance - is the rear raised, front lowered? looks nonstick. Is the transmission stock? Thank you

  • charlieclark1 3 months, 2 weeksago

Any photos of the bottom of the car, suspension, floor pans, engine, ect. Was it repainted the original color and did it have any previous rust. Thanks.
