This 1971 Datsun 240Z is finished in Monte Carlo Red over a black interior. The Nissan S30, known as the Fairlady Z in the Japanese market and the Datsun 240Z in others, served as Datsun’s halo car. A detailed restoration was executed on this Z in 2018 and included a restored interior featuring reupholstered seats, new carpets, and a new headliner along with bodywork and new paint. This Z was acquired in California and spent time in Pennsylvania and Georgia before becoming part of the Wilson Collection in Florida in 2018. This Datsun 240Z is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

The iconic 240Z silhouette is characterized by a long hood and short rear deck. Finished in Monte Carlo Red, this example is said to have received bodywork restoration and new paint in 2018.  A chrome 240Z badge on the rear pillar along with two horizontal vents below the rear hatch glass, distinguishes this Z as an early 1971 example. Details include front and rear chrome bumpers with overriders, blue and red Datsun emblem center wheel caps, and a set of 5-spoke Factory Slotted polished aluminum wheels dressed in Pirelli P4 tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The restored black interior features reupholstered seats, new carpets, and a new headliner. The center console and the rear shock towers in the trunk have been wrapped in custom leather with diamond stitching to resemble the original vinyl design that came with the car. Details include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a wooden shift knob, a lockable glove box, hand-crank side windows, chrome-trimmed Datsun door sills, and a carpeted trunk. The dash assembly and gauges were refurbished by Just Dashes Inc. of Van Nuys, CA. The seller reports all gauges, electronics, and accessories to be working properly.

This 240Z is powered by an L24 2.4-liter inline 6-cylinder cast iron block engine with dual Hitachi SU-type carburetors. As much as 151 HP and 146 lb.-ft of torque are sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. This Datsun 240Z is said to be up to date on service.

This sale includes a bill of sale from a previous transaction, a title, a warranty card, a toolkit, and a spare tire.

The seller would like you to know: After arriving at the Wilson Collection in 2018 the car underwent a detailed restoration. This is a very nice example of a 240Z for someone who appreciates attention to detail and originality, and it is a joy to drive.

I have a 240 Z with Vanh 24000. It was manufactured in February 71. So the vents were changed in January 71. Period the manufactured date of a Z can be located on the seatbelts.

  • RYERGTI (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

I have the same exact car in MCR. Came from Goleta, CA. One of my favorite cars in our collection. Still turns more heads than our 74’ 911s. Ring the bell it deserves all the money. These cars changed the sports car market forever!

  • 240zGuild (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@Dwhite It was a statement saying that I hope the seller has a decent reserve set that reflects the amount of Cost and Labor in the car, so it wasn’t a question of what his reserve was, and was a completely respectful comment.

With that being said, this car at this current bid is still less than half of its build cost at a minimum, which is not including the car itself. So I do hope this car gets what it deserves, which is a above safe reserve that yields at least what any car guy knows the build cost would be.

    It's a lovely 240. GLWA.

  • Dwhite (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@240zGuild I never understand when someone is concerned about a cars reserve. If someone is selling a car with a reserve then they already have a number they will part with the car. Why would you care one way or the other.

The team did very well. One nitpicky thing I did notice the rear grommets on the hatch should actually be open for the hoses to come down for the vent system in
    the tailgate.

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@70gt500 thank you for the kind words. A team of people worked hard to bring this beauty back to its original luster.

@DrT Rockers were replaced / lower quarter panels were patched. Engine and transmission were gone through / given complete set of new gaskets. Also the car was media blasted before bodywork and paint. I've added photos detailing the receipts of some of the parts purchase that pertain to your questions.

    Regards

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@dsdepew your ok. Yes first owner was from Manhattan Beach CA

  • 70gt500 (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

This is an extremely well done well thought out detailed restoration. I did one similar for my friends Zcar, and had roughly the same amount in receipts over 57K not including labor. We easily spent 75K to get his car done to this high of a standard. I have another series one I am just about complete with and, although modified a bit more will be well into it for 85K. This is top-notch work, my compliments.

  • DrT (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

During restoration was the engine & transmission rebuilt? Has any patch panels been welded in (floors, quarters, etc)? Thanks

  • dsdepew (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

W/C, man, I don’t mean to be a PITA but was the 1st owner from Manhattan Beach? My last question, I swear!

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@dsdepew I don't have that information unfortunately. The only information I have on the first owner is what is on the warranty card.

  • dsdepew (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Thank you! Any idea what the CA license plate might have been?

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@dsdepew All I know is it was from Manhattan Beach California

  • Lstepp4re (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

I checked the Datsun 240Z Registry of America..only 5.9 % of Zs were Monte Carlo / Black

  • dsdepew (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

W/C, did you see my "ask" below?

  • Lstepp4re (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

I have restored numerous Z cars and FWIW…for anyone interested in this build..The time and money it takes to bring a Z to this level.. is astronomical ..Given the scarcity of remaining parts and the rare Monte Carlo Red color..this would be a hard build to replicate..Great Z..GLWA

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@240zGuild thank you very much. I believe our reserve is right at fair market value and does reflect the costs and efforts. This is a great car for a true Z enthusiast and we want it to go directly to the person who is going to appreciate it.

    Regards

  • 240zGuild (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Also in review, this car appears to be a very nicely done car in cleanliness and workmanship, so it should definitely fetch a solid number just on the Cost Alone to achieve, so I do hope the seller has a reserve that reflects the cost and effort here.

  • 240zGuild (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Some of the 1971 production cars did have the hatch vents as they were still Series One cars which donned the solid 240z badges on the older non vented sail panel bodies, so this car is still a Series One production car by all standards.

It wasn’t until about 5/71 or so that Nissan/Datsun went to the Series II vented sail panel body where the hatch vents disappeared due to no need, but there was a couple months transition period loosely referred to as the Series 1.5 that had some Series One parts like seats, console, vertical defrost back glass as the assembly line used them up.

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@richjs43 thank you. My understanding lead me to the same conclusion, that 16989 did come with vents from the factory.

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@CaliforniaG that makes sense. I believe it was somewhere in the middle of 71" when the change was made.

  • dsdepew (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Any idea where in Calif this came from? I had an identical car in high school in the late ‘70’s? Wish I had the VIN. I did have a very cool personalized blue plate on the car (which I still have the front plate hanging in my garage) that “IF” this car still had when out of CA, would confirm if it was the same car. Any help here????

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@CaliforniaG @CaliforniaG: thanks for your input…I do not have the VIN number for my 1971 240Z, so I can’t verify why my car did not have the vents.
In checking this out, my feedback was: That 240Z’s produced from Oct.1969 through Dec. of 1970 had the vents on the rear hatch. This beautiful Z vin ending in 16989 with a build date of 12/70 means rear deck vents are original. thanks again for your input, very helpful to all….

  • CaliforniaG (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

    @richjs43
The rear deck vents were around until approx vin "21000" or something close to that

  • richjs43 (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@WilsonCollection: I noticed the trunk lid has vents. I believe these were eliminated after the 1970 production. I owned a new 1971 240Z, and was disappointed that Datsun eliminated trunk vents after 1970. These look great on your Z…..I’ll be watching the auction. I am lover of these cars, so much that years after I sold my 1971, I found and bought a perfect pre-owned orange 1970. These cars are great drivers.

Beautifully done Z, seller. Finally, a seller who knows how to really prepare, clean and present a fine automobile. My first car, out of college, was a ‘71 240Z. Fun and fantastic little beast. Sadly, the upper East Coast road salt gave it an early and bad case of the tin worm. GLWTA.
