The Datsun 240Z remains an iconic classic, revered for its style, performance, and affordability. This 1971 example underwent extensive restoration and modification by UnderCover Restorations of Merritt Island, Florida, reportedly costing approximately $140,000. It is powered by a machine shop-rebuilt 3.0-liter 2JZ-GTE inline-six engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and has been refinished in Ford Volcanic Gray over a custom black leather interior. It boasts various aftermarket upgrades such as an Apex Engineering suspension with custom engine mounts, a Boss touchscreen audio system with a Pioneer subwoofer, a Nardi steering wheel, BC coilovers, a Vintage Air Conditioning system, and more. This meticulously restored 240Z is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.

The 240Z is widely recognized for its iconic silhouette, which features a long hood and a short rear deck. This example underwent a bodywork restoration and is refinished in Ford Volcanic Gray. It showcases a Skillard Billet front grill, custom plasma-cut hood louvers, wheel-arch flares, front and rear spoilers, and custom side mirrors. It rides on aftermarket silver-finished 18” wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The paint benefits from a professionally applied ceramic coating. The seller notes the front left of the hood is slightly misaligned (approximately 1/8"). Detailed images, including the bodywork restoration process, are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features custom bucket seats upholstered in black leather, complemented by matching carpets. It is equipped with a wood-trimmed Nardi steering wheel and a matching shift knob, and amenities include electric windows, a Vintage Air Conditioning system, and a Boss touchscreen audio system paired with Rockford Fosgate 6”x9” speakers and a Pioneer subwoofer. Additionally, an automatically-connecting AppleCarplay system is located within the glovebox. All gauges and electronics are confirmed to be functioning properly, although the emergency flashers and the rear defogger are currently inoperable, and the emergency brake is disconnected.

A machine shop-rebuilt 3.0-liter 2JZ-GTE inline-six engine, equipped with a Precision 6266 turbocharger, delivers power to the rear wheels through a Tremec T-56 Magnum 6-speed manual transmission and a Ford-sourced 8.8 limited-slip differential. Performance upgrades include an aftermarket aluminum intake, an intercooler kit, a custom aluminum radiator, custom engine mounts, and a MegaSquirt engine management system and transmission controller. An Apex Engineering suspension and Apex Engineering components and 32-way adjustable BC racing coilovers have been fitted, while Wilwood disc brakes provide stopping power to all four corners.

This sale will include a clean title.

I do believe if it was more stock looking it would have gotten closer to that number. Lots of work done and lots of money spent, but it's needs the one person who has to have it.

To me these builds are really fir the person who does them. They should appreciate the car and enjoy it for years.

I love the 240 Z but would really want a stock looking car. JMO.

Great looking car and build. At the asking price I’d suggest some driving videos and some dyno sheets.

To confirm. The boost is at low end of about 8psi. Can handle 13-14psi
With lower spring we are estimated per builder and tuner that the HP is about 550HP. Changing boost could generate about 800.
Hope this helps. Thanks for bidding. This is one great car. As I said you will not be disappointed.

As for the emergency flasher it requires a new circuit. I have just not gotten around to it is the simple answer. Emergency brake same issue. Happy to credit new owner. As for the hood at the point on left the hood sits up a bit and the fit is not flush. This I cannot fix. And it’s only in a small area towards the nose. As for the defroster that requires rear window panel. They are hard to find. And given while I had the car it would never see wind, hail, snow or rain it was a moot issue. Hope this helps.

You mentioned a few issues that need to be addressed. With such a nice build why not fix the flashers, emergency brake and defogger. Minor issues but just wondering.
More importantly what is the issue with the hood alignment?

  • gwalden (seller) 4 days, 4 hoursago

Boost at or about 10psi....I will also check and confirm with builder; 300 - 350hp conservative but as per previous comments I have not had it set on dyno nor found the right person to "fine" tune. And when we built this car I had lengthy discussions with builder on HP and I did not want more than 350 HP give or take...for me that was enough in this car...it will and can certainly be set up to handle a lot more...that would be up to new owner...as it sits its pretty darn quick...and reliable...hope this helps

A 6266 turbo on a 2JZ only making 3xx horsepower doesn't sound right. How much boost is it tuned on and what fuel? Who did the tuning?
Assuming the engine internals are completely stock with exception of the head studs that were added?

Thanks to all who have shown interest in the Z. Just adding a few words...dont think this car could be built today for the original cost...three years to build...a great project...and I hope everyone sees the end product as a great result. This car is not a trialer queen..though it could be...meant to be driven, enjoyed and it will be admired no matter where the new owner goes...
The winning bidder will not be disappointed with this 240Z.
Thanks to all for your interest.

@Spazaz88 you did not miss anything. Have not had the car on a dyno. If I had to guess it’s moat likely in the 300hp range. A lot of power for a very light weight car. and as I am sure you know the 2J can be set up for 2000hp. I would suggest that’s total overkill. But, having said all that the car has plenty of power and the turbo gives it a big additional boost. No one will be disappointed with the engine set up, the handling and the pure thrill of driving this Z. This car was built to own not to sell. A big difference for any potential car buyer.

  • Spazaz88 (registered bidder) 1 week, 1 dayago

Don't know if I missed it in description but dyno numbers posted yet?

  • gwalden (seller) 1 week, 1 dayago

@Mtut thanks...this was a three year passion build. A lot of R&D and thought...happy that its appreciated. Hate to see it go...who ever gets it should drive it and have fun with it...it handles great, looks great in person...the paint/color changes constantly and the iron fleck makes it sparkle in the bright sunlight...always gets a compliment...the z gets a ton of attention everywhere it goes...the 72 Z was and remains iconic to this day...timeless styling...
