Up for auction is this custom 1971 Porsche 911E “Speedster” finished in Metallic Grey over a black interior with Pepita cloth upholstered seats. Beginning as a standard 911E Targa, this 1971 example was transformed into a one-off roadster inspired by Porsche’s iconic 356 Speedster with custom body styling, a Supertec 2.4 L flat-six engine, an upgraded suspension, and a 356-inspired interior. A truly unique build unlike any other 911 on the road, this beautifully executed 911 Speedster is now being offered by its seller in Florida with a clean title.
Under previous ownership, this 911E was outfitted with steel fender flares, fiberglass bumpers, a center-fill hood, a Speedster-style rear panel, and a shortened Speedster windshield. Other features include roll hoops behind the front seats, a removable fiberglass tonneau cover, and shaved door handles. The Metallic Grey paint is said to be in good condition with only minor paint chips, and some rust repair was reportedly carried out during the build process along with the replacement of the floor panels (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). This 911 rides on 17” Fuchs-style wheels dressed in Yokohama Advan Neova tires.
Inside, this example features later-model Porsche 911 bucket seats that have been custom upholstered in black vinyl with Pepita cloth inserts. Other details include a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel, Coco floormats, custom hollow door panels, silver seatbelts, and a Rennline brushed metal dashboard with a custom 356-style instrument cluster featuring a GPS speedometer. The digital odometer currently shows approximately 2k miles, and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly including heater vents located under the dashboard. The true mileage on the chassis remains unknown.
The 2.2L flat-six engine in this 911E was brought to Supertec in California during the mid-2000s to undergo a custom rebuild at a cost of over $12k. The engine displacement was increased to 2.4 L and the following upgrades were installed for a claimed output of over 180 HP:

The rear wheels are driven by a 901 5-speed manual gearbox which was reportedly rebuilt and resealed in 2019. The suspension has also been upgraded with Bilstein shocks and Tarrett sway bars. A major service was performed within the last 100 miles including an oil change, carburetor tune-up, and wheel alignment. This Speedster is said to be in excellent mechanical order, please see the photo gallery for images of the underside and engine build details.

Hey, I know this car. I parked right next to is at Werks Reunion this past spring at Amelia (that's my Lime & Orange 911 Outlaw in the video). Spoke with the owner and turned out we were former neighbors. Regarding the car, the pictures don't do it justice. You know how some cars look better in real life than in pictures, IMO this is one of them. The build quality was very good as I recall, but the car has been driven so maybe not flawless. Someone posted about the windshield height ... it is appropriate if you compared to 356 Speedsters. The roll bar is Boxster-esque if you will. Only change I might make would be lower ride height, but I thinks its more of an illusion due to the low-slung Speedster look. If you want something unique and different that you can drive and enjoy this is it and you likely wont be breaking the bank.

driver's door panel doesn't close properly in the 'entry' sequence in the video. sloppy production values? or sloppy bodywork?
sorry you lost me with the dashboard, looks like it was cobbled together out of a mod 50's Chevy. I think the concept has merit but the execution doesn't accomplish it.

I just love this car and have to disagree with the naysayers. I think the proportions are just right and I would grab this in a heartbeat if I had room.I said this when the car appeared for sale before..if this had the name Emory , Singer or Magnus Walker attached to it the bidding would be through the roof.( which it doesn't have!) Looks to me like the workmanship is top notch too.I could really see me zooming around the backroads of Sonoma in this beauty. I believe this is a car Porsche should have made at the time and not waited and made the more bloated version down the road. The light weight of this really appeals to me as the owner of a 56 A Outlaw.
@Chipper I follow this site very closely and have actually almost one a few cars. You would be surprised that I have seen at least 4 or 5 cars that no sale on BAT sell here, most recently the GT3 race car just a few weeks ago. I know BAT has a huge community but I think the buyers here are much more knowledgeable on Porsche for sure.

I think this build looks fantastic. The proportions show well and the stance in right on. I really love the early look minimalist but high end looking interior as well. In the world were quality replica Speedsters can sell for 40’s this should at least beat that. Anyway. Cool car. GLWA
A bit odd looking. Doesn’t flow like the 60s Towne Speedster.
IMHO, windshield too short and upright, rear quarter valence too small, seats and roll bar feel like Boxster, wheel/tire combo too wide and tall. A decent effort that falls short of what could have been.
Topped out at 38.5K on BAT 2 weeks ago. Didn’t hit reserve. Sol on BAT a year or two before that.
@Gregory In order to make a video such as this the footage and sound are shot at different times. So it is the actual sound of the engine just put over the footage. I will be taking the car for a quick drive today to get some raw footage for you all. Thank you.
@dgpnaples I don't think he was shifting with two hands on the wheel- sounded like "overrun" (think thats what you'd call it) just letting off the gas.
I would give the seller credit that its not a fake sound track.
@dno76 Good afternoon, photos have been added of the windshield and roll bar mount. It appears as if on the window line the targa roll bar was removed and has a full interior which prevents me from getting eyes on without essentially disassembling the interior. The metal work on this car is of high craftsmanship considering the rear quarter flares have been welded with no signs of blemishes. Can you post pictures of where/how the windshield was attached and where the targa bar was removed (under the removable tonneau cover)? Would like to see the quality of the work in those two specific areas.
@dno76 The engine should be the original crankcase but completely rebuilt by Supertec. The 901 "Dog Leg" transmission should also be original to the car. The 911 was originally a Targa so no CoA to speak of. Unsure of the original color before it was modified but is currently Metallic Gray. Thank you.
How can you drive with two hands on the wheel and shift the gears? In the opening driving scene the car sound is shifting gears but the driver has two hands on the wheel. If you are going to post a video of the car driving, DRIVE IT! This may seem trivial but it does not represent the car correctly. Just my two cents.
Is this a matching numbers (engine and transmission) car? Do you have CoA? What is the original color?

This 911 makes all the right noises, flies through the gears, and weighing slightly over 1800 pounds is a blast to drive. Although not for the purists this is the early Porsche 911 Speedster that never was, Porsche would not do so until the very late 80s. Stan Townes, who lived in Southern California built a similar custom car in the early 70s and it was a hit.
